2 WHAT IS THE SCHOOL TRAVEL PLAN? The school travel plan is an annual plan as to how the school can become more sustainable and greener. At Tawhid Boys School we work on a range of different initiatives to promote sustainable and healthier travel. As Muslims it is our duty to look after our bodies and the environment around us as they are an Amaanah and it is our responsibility to ensure we look after them. The Way To Thank Allah For The Gift Of Health Would Be To Preserve It In Accordance With Allah s Rules. We are always coming up with different ways to promote students and teachers to travel greener! These are explained throughout the booklet and some info on what we have been doing throughout the year. 2014/15 Travel Survey Results Pupils cycling to school is now 12% Car Sharing up by 7% Park And Stride up by 1% DLR up by 2% Public Bus has not changed 2

3 Safety Tips For Cyclists WE ALSO PROVIDE LEVEL 2 & 3 ROAD CYCLE TRAINING TO OUR PUPILS & STAFF 1. Ride positively, decisively and well clear of the kerb look and signal to show drivers what you plan to do and make eye contact where possible so you know drivers have seen you 2. Always use lights after dark or when visibility is poor 3. Wearing light coloured or reflective clothing during the day and reflective clothing and/or accessories in the dark increases your visibility 4. Follow the Highway Code including observing stop and give way signs and traffic lights 5. THINK! recommends wearing a correctly fitted cycle helmet, which is securely fastened and conforms to current regulations 3

5 Road Safety Week- Police Visit In the middle of November, 2014 we had 2 police officers who paid us a visit at the School. PC Muhammed and PC Spinks talked to the Upper School about the importance of road safety, especially when cycling. Bikers Breakfast We hold a bikers breakfast once a term. At the breakfast pupils can get minor repairs for their bike as well as 5

6 Road Safety Presentation As part of our STAR Europe project pupils presented a PowerPoint to the upper and lower school on the causes and prevention of road accidents, in particular with teenagers. Dragons Den Cash Prize Of 300 As part of our STAR Enrichment program, pupils from Year 7 presented their new and exciting cycling initiatives to a panel of judges from Transport for London, The judges loved their pitch that they invested 300 into their project to help promote cycling in summer. 6

7 Father And Son Cycling During the early days of May 2015, we organised an event for sons to cycle alongside their fathers, from Springhill- Lee Valley to Herts. We left for 9.00am, and returned at 2.30pm. We went up for a short hike and had some refreshments on our break. It was a unique experience!!! (pupil year 7) On Your Bike In the beginning of June we held a cycling event at Spring Hill Park, which started from 12.30pm to 3.00pm with refreshments provided. We had a range of activities, such as a BMX Workshop, Obstacle Course, Riddles and Puzzles. We also had Dr. Bike who came to help with the maintenance of the bikes. As well as all this, we had our coach Mr Steve teaching pupils to cycle. 6 pupils learned to ride a bike on the day-what a great achievement! 7

8 Cycling To Deepdale Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils took a cycling trip to The Deepdale Granary in Norfolk. After taking a short hike around the local area, before going off to see the sandy beach. Halfords Visit In mid June, we had Halfords who came in for a visit. They had held a cycling workshop for Year 7A and 7B. They were presented with vouchers and certificates. 8

9 Safe routes to schools taught in science lessons Safe routes to schools is a project that aims to encourage more children to walk or cycle to school. If parents did not drive their children to school, they would use less fossil fuels. There would be fewer traffic jams and less pollution because there would be fewer cars on the roads. Children would be healthier, because they would get more exercise, and this may even help them to do better at school! Many parents do not want their children to walk or cycle to school because they are afraid they may be killed or injured in a road accident. Safe routes to schools runs projects that try to get local authoriti to improve road safety. Road safety can be improved by building special footpaths or cycle routes, or by making cycle lanes on busy roads. More pedestrian crossings can be built, to help children cross busy roads safely. The road just outside the school can be made safer. Lots of children cross the road near the school, but this ca be dangerous because there are often a lot of cars parked there while parents drop off their children. Drivers must be stopped from parking just outside schools, and made to drive slowly when they are passing the school. Sometimes parents do not want their children to cycle to school in case their bicycle gets stolen. Schools could encourage children to cycle by making sure there is a secure cycle shed, and giving them a locker where they could keep their cycle helmet and reflective clothing. 9

10 WOW BAGDGE COMPETITION Year 7, 8 and 9 participated in an Art competition, were they designed badges to promote walking. 10

11 BIKE AROUND THE BOROUGH On Thursday June 18th, 10 pupils took part in the Bike Around the Borough event organised by Hackney Council. 873 riders from across Hackney has assembled in Hackney Downs and Clissold Park for the 9 mile course to Hackney East Marshes. They narrowly missed out on the world record by 8 riders! 11

12 Cycling Training provided to 7A Part of our cycling program is to provide on road cycle training during PE lessons. 18 pupils were given on road cycle training by professional instructors and were also awarded certificates. Walking is Rewarding Part of our enrichment program at the school is to encourage pupils to walk and cycle to school. On Wednesday 13th May 2015 we held a Walking Day. Pupils were required to walk a minimum distance of at least 3 bus stops. Pupils were served a Full English Breakfast. Halal Sausages, Eggs, Beans on Toast, croissants and juices all served by the Head Teacher! 12
