1. RATIONALE Donegal Sports Partnership have been coordinating National Bike Week in County Donegal since Working in partnership with a number of local statutory and community agencies to deliver the now annual week-long programme promoting cycling throughout the Donegal. Cycling as a sport and a leisure pastime has become more popular in Ireland and in Donegal in recent years with a huge growth in road cycling through the establishment of new clubs and cycling communities. Bike Week is a national programme supported by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport via the local authorities and Local Sports Partnership network (LSP) with events in each county in Ireland. Bike Week gives the opportunity to those who haven t cycled before or returning to the saddle to use their bicycles for commuting, recreation, sport and health and fitness purposes or just for the sheer joy of it! The idea? There are many types of activities that can be planned for the week from free bike maintenance checks, fun cycles, lunchtime city rides, heritage cycles, electric bike races, school cycling events, road races and much more. There truly is some type of event out there for every age and ability and everyone all are welcome to take part. Donegal Bike Week Report 2014 Page 3

2. AIMS & OBJECTIVES The key aims of the programme were; To promote the benefits of recreational cycling to all sections of Donegal especially to those who may not have opportunities to participate. To encourage greater participation in recreational cycling, especially to those less motivated to take part in any type of sport. To get communities and cycling clubs to work together in delivering cycle related events. To promote all types of cycling throughout the county and to possibly increase the amount of people who take part in competitive cycling. The programme in general was aimed at a host of groups including; Recreational cycling groups and other community organisations with an interest in developing cycling as a leisure pastime, a sport or to support a healthier lifestyle. Schools including pre-schools and primary and post primary schools to promote events planned throughout the county All types of leisure, fitness, sports centres and clubs to promote cycling. 6 3. METHODOLOGY As this is a 32-County event the date is centrally agreed, the date chosen this year is June 14 th June 22 nd. A steering group to guide the planning and delivery of the programme was established which included executive from the DSP, Health Service Executive, local cycling clubs and Donegal County Council. The first meeting of the group took place at DSP Offices on the 17 th Feb 2014 to discuss the initiative and to put some planning in place and to identify possible dates for events. It was agreed that the programme required the support of sporting, educational, corporate, business and community and voluntary to deliver a programme of events with an emphasis on relevant contacts such as local cycling clubs therefore it was agreed to contact as many groups as possible to firstly attempt to gain volunteers to help plan events and also in order to promote the events when planned. A dedicated database of all target clubs and groups was drawn up as a mailing list to include the name, contact number and address of the contact person within the sports clubs or group using last year s list and adding any new and relevant contact details. An information pack for bike week was produced. This pack contained an event registration, risk assessment form, and an event form to be used after the completion of the event. This pack was sent out via to all contacts with an giving more instructions. It was agreed that the emphasis on the 2014 programme would be around targeting those most marginalised and socially excluded in communities to participate in cycling events. It was also agreed that a number of cycle celebration festivals would be held across county in order to raise the profile of bike week and to encourage wide participation from all communities. Education and Training for communities around safety in cycling, programmes for promoting cycling and cycle proficiency in schools were also discussed as potential targets. A number of media events and modes were discussed in order to raise the profile of Bike Week including the continued link with Highland Radio and Ocean FM most popular radio shows and sports. A dedicated launch of Bike Week Donegal was planned to coincide with a lunchtime cycle around Letterkenny town. Donegal Bike Week Report 2014 Page 5

4. PROMOTION AND MARKETING OF BIKE WEEK Donegal Sports Partnership annually deliver an Active Donegal campaign during the month of June, Bike Week has now become an integral part of the Active Donegal campaign and dovetails excellently with the ethos of the overall programme. A number of strategies were adopted to market and promote Bike Week 2014 in County Donegal including; A marketing and media campaign with local radio stations including Highland Radio, Ocean FM and Irish language radio station Radio Na Gaeltachta, this included interviews on daily programmes, daily updates of events on popular shows and social media information bytes to promote events. Uploading all events to the National Bike Week website. A dedicated launch in Letterkenny with representatives from Donegal County Council (DCC), Donegal Sports Partnership, former cycling professional Ronan McLaughlin and the newly elected, DCC Chairperson Cllr. John Campbell. Promotion of events on the Donegal Sports Partnership web site, Facebook pages and twitter feeds. Promotion of events on local online media outlets Donegal Daily and Donegal Now. Press Release Dust down your Bicycle for Bike Week 2014 Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of all that's great about bikes and cycling. Held over a week in June of each year with bike themed events organised by local authorities, community groups and cycling groups throughout Ireland, this year s event will run from the 14 th to 23 rd June 2014 From free bike checks, fun cycles, lunchtime city rides, heritage cycles, electric bike races, school cycling events, bike festivals, road races and much more. 8 Among the key aspects of the plan implemented were; Bike Week Donegal 2014 was officially launched by Chairman of Donegal County Council Cllr John Campbell in the presence of Michael O Heanaigh, DCC Director of Services and several members of Donegal Sports Partnership staff including Coordinator Myles Sweeney. (see picture below) The photographs taken at this event were then used along with a press release to promote Bike Week through local media outlets within the county. As the Donegal Sports Partnership were already using Highland Radio to promote events for Active Donegal it was agreed that Bike Week events would be promoted in the same manner through the John Breslin Morning Show and the Lee Gooch evening talk show. Both John Breslin and Lee Gooch of Highland Radio promoted Bike Week prior to the 14 th and encouraged communities to register a bike event, as they did during the Active Donegal campaign. During Bike Week, both radio hosts spoke about the events taking place on a daily basis and hugely encouraged people to get involved. Local press and online news outlets were also used for promoting activities including interviews with RTE Radio Na Gaeltachta, Highland Radio and Ocean FM. Events were published on the Donegal Sports Partnerships website and Facebook and twitter along with events for Active Donegal month. Also events were uploaded to the designated website for all bike week activities and at times onto the Get Ireland Active website. Donegal Bike Week Report 2014 Page 7

5.3. CYCLE ADVENTURES IN THE PARK WITH GRASSROUTES Date: 14 th 22 nd June 2014 Location: Grassroutes Bike Adventures Glenveagh National Park GrassRoutes Bike Adventures hosted a week of Cycle Adventures in Glenveagh National Park in conjunction with Bike Week 2014 (14 th 22 nd June). Predominantly families and tourists visiting the area, some of which were first time cyclists took part in the varied 5-10mile trail routes around the lake at Glenveagh National Park. Approximately 180 people participated throughout the week, with the largest numbers attending on the opening weekend (Saturday-70, Sunday 45). This exceeded their expectations and GrassRoutes have eluded to the PR support from Donegal Sports Partnership for their advertisements through local radio and social media as the contributing factor. GrassRoutes commented on the feedback from its social media sites following the events were very positive, with many saying they didn t realise they had such great cycling and walking routes on their doorstep with all of the routes off-road and very safe. GrassRoutes have indicated that they would be delighted to run this event next year; however they may condense the events to one weekend. Cyclists were shown how to cycle in a group and how to do U-turn at the front. On reaching the bottom of the climb everyone took it at their own pace and slowly made it to the top. For many of the group this was their very first time to cycle up Glengesh, a feat which they assured was very memorable and many thought they could never achieve. The cyclists gathered at the picnic area where they enjoyed a warm cuppa with sandwiches before taking on the very tricky descent back down the mountain and return to Glenties. For a lot of people it was their first time to cycle in a group and they loved the route that was taken. The sense of achievement in cycling up Glengesh was amazing. The event again was very well supported by local community volunteers, who provided marshalling and first aid services. A representative from Cancer Research spoke to the participating cyclists before the event and thanked them for their contributions to the Cancer Research and also congratulated them on getting active in doing so! Advertisements again played a significant part in recruiting families and local communities to the town for the cycle. Donegal Bike Week Report 2014 Page 14

The entire group cycled back to Glenties, 30kms in total, where they all met up at the Highlands Hotel for tea and scones and a chance to sit back, relax and discuss their highlights. The feedback from the Ladies was very positive; the group mixed well and they felt comfortable cycling within the group. TEAM TIME TRIAL WITH ERRIGAL CYCLING CLUB Date: Locations: Monday 16 th June Errigal Cycling Club Termon, Kilmacrennan, Milford, Carrigart & Creeslough 16 teams of four completed the 30 mile Time Trial organised by Errigal Cycling Club. Route covered encompassed the areas of Termon, Kilmacrennan, Milford, Carrigart and Creeslough. Approximately 70 people took part including cyclists and marshals. Due to the nature of the Time Trial, the event attracted both men and women, young and not so young. The chosen route took in all left-hand turns, which also made it very safe. Refreshments in the sunny surrounds of Glenties Community Centre were served, while everyone compared their stories and times. There were two men that travelled especially from Rathmullan and some from Donegal Town for the event and they really enjoyed it. The cycle pace was controlled ensuring the enjoyment for all abilities. Everyone cycled to Portnoo where the local boat club catered for the group and provided kayaking, sailing and some of the group were even taken out on a speed boat. After the water sports, the BBQ was set up at the pier. It was getting dark so transport was arranged for the youths and their bikes to get back home and some of the adults cycled home. A brilliant evening was had by everyone, with a variety of different sports on offer experienced personnel on hand to help out. For a lot of people it was the first time to cycle the distance of 15kms which they were very proud of and really enjoyed and also their first time trying water sports. He credited the advertisement through Donegal Sports Partnership and the association with National Bike Week of having a significant impact on the new faces, as they would never have reached them through club circles. Many of the men, who are members of the club, came out to support and provided marshalling services also. Donegal Bike Week Report 2014 Page 20

5.14. FAMILY 10K CYCLE WITH ERRIGAL CC Date: Locations: Wednesday 18 th June Errigal Cycling Club Termon & Falcarragh This is the second year in succession Errigal Cycling Club have ran the Family 10k cycle, this year it really was a family event, with some grandparents even taking part. The first was a 5k route through Falcarragh leaving from the National School, or alternatively a 10k double loop of the same route. Safety assessments were carried out prior to the event, and the route was well marshalled by Errigal Cycling Club members. The route was flat, therefore it was suitable for recreational cyclists. The club plan to make this an annual event whereby it will encourage and allow new members in the community the opportunity to try cycling in a noncompetitive environment. 23 5.15. BARRACK HILL COME & TRY WITH CARN CHAIN GANG Date: Locations: Thursday 19 th June Carn Chain Gang Carndonagh Phelim Mc Callion, Carn Chain Gang organised this Come & Try event, on the 19 th June. 20 took part in the 1.5hour session at the Donegal County Council cycle track at Barrack Hill. Details of the event were sent to two large local National Schools, however only one attended. Children that attended thoroughly enjoyed the day and availed of skills training on braking, balancing and cornering. The organisers were relatively disappointed with the low numbers. On review, it may have been more effective to talk directly with the children, instead of sending in flyers to the school. In addition, the location of the event is somewhat un-used at present and very few people in the locality know it exists. The Donegal County Council plan to official open the track in the coming months and it may be worth running the event again in September to highlight this unique facility. Donegal Bike Week Report 2014 Page 22

5.16. 25 5.17. FUN CYCLE FOR ALL THE FAMILY WITH RATHMULLAN CC Date: Location: Friday 20 th June Rathmullan Cycling Club Rathmullan Rathmullan Cycling Club organised a very successful 10k cycle around the town of Rathmullan for families who enjoy recreational cycling. 26 5.18. INFORMATION EVENING & FAMILY FUN DAY - DONEGAL BAY CC Date: Locations: Friday 20 th & Sunday 22 nd June Donegal Bay Cycling Club Donegal Town On Friday 20 th June, Donegal Bay Cycling Club held an information evening in the St. John Bosco Centre, Donegal Town. In conjunction with the information evening the club had organised a series of 6 weekly cycles for beginners. The first of these was held on Friday 27 th June 2014, with approximately 12 cyclists, mainly women and children taking part. On Sunday June 22 nd, Donegal Bay Cycling Club held a Family Fun Day on the Diamond in Donegal Town as part of Bike Week A range of activities including slow bicycle races for adults and youths, puncture fixing, speed tests and 1km turbo spins were provided. Almost 40 participants took part in a 10km cycle around the town while 15 cyclists and walkers took part in a shorter 2km cycle for the younger guests. On their return from the cycle all participants were rewarded with well-deserved drinks, snacks and musical entertainment. With the event being held in such a central part of the town, it was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the club and the work they do, but also to give the general public an awareness of the benefits of cycling. They also ensured that their events were fully inclusive for people for all abilities. Total attendances were between 50 and 55. The participation at the information evening was less than what was expected. The club reported that a Sunday afternoon earlier in the year (e.g. Easter time) would be more suitable. An alternative option would be to hold the event in a more public venue (perhaps on the Diamond on a Saturday afternoon). There was very positive feedback from all those who took part in the Family Fun Day. This included visitors to the town who joined in the fun by having a go at some of the activities. It was felt that a contributory factor to numbers being less than they were in 2013 was the fact that the Senior County GAA team were playing a championship match in Clones on the same day. However, the general feeling is that the Family Fun Day was very successful given the circumstances. Donegal Bike Week Report 2014 Page 25

5.19. MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL WALK & PICNIC WITH TIR CHONAILL GAP Date: Location: Saturday 21 st June Tir Chonaill Gap Cycling Club Glenties, Glen, Meenahalla & Meenagush This event was advertised in all surrounding towns by flyers, posters, local news letters Facebook and club texts and also through the Donegal Sports Partnership and National Bike Week websites. On the same day in Glenties there was a charity walk due to take place at the same time, so the club decided to amalgamate with the charity walk. As the route was passed the road to the trail, the club took their members onwards up onto the beautifully scenic trail through the Glen, Meenahalla and Meenagush. It turned out to be a real eye opener for the people who had not been up there before and they were intrigued to see how the mountain bikers could ride across some of the terrain. There was a picnic at the top of the trail taking in the scenery high above Glenties and afterwards the group returned to the town. Again the feedback was very positive. The cyclists enjoyed joining in with the charity walk and were impressed with the breathtaking views and amazing scenery, which made the trek to the top of the mountain more than worthwhile. A lot of walkers expressed an interest in trying to do some of the trail by bike in the future. Donegal Bike Week Report 2014 Page 26

5.20. FAMILY FUN DAY WITH TIR CHONAILL GAP CC Date: Location: Sunday 22 nd June Tir Chonaill Gap Cycling Club Glenties On Sunday 22 nd June at 2:00pm, 115 participants (families of all ages, men, women and children) from Killybegs, Dunkineely, Frosses, Ardara, Portnoo, Burtonport and Glenties gathered in the CostCutters car park in Glenties. After introductions, a safety talk and awareness of signage put in place, three groups were formed. Transport was available to groups if anyone wanted a rest. Group One was our little tiny tots and parents, they were shown a few skills and how to cycle in a group and they all headed off on their tricycles and bikes and cycled to the local town park where they were shown some more bike skills. Group Two was the young kids and beginners, who completed a 10km cycle accompanied by some of the clubs senior cyclists. Group Three consisted of more advanced cyclists of men, women and youths who set off on a 25km cycle through Ardara and across the scenic road to Maas and back to town where they had entertainment lined up including music, bouncy castles and a food tent (BBQ). By the end, everyone had worked up an appetite and were delighted with the refreshments on offer. Parents spent a few hours mixing with other parents and adults while the kids were being entertained on bikes and bouncy castles. In summary, it was a great day, everything went well and most of all it was a successful family fun day. There was very positive feedback from all parents and kids. There was cycles and something available for all ages. Parents were delighted to get the kids involved in the outdoor sports and that they were able to do it as a family. It was a great social event for everyone that took part. All groups were very well marshalled and the car park was closed off for the BBQ and bouncy castles making it secure for kids to run and play, with plenty of food and drinks available all day. Safe Cycling workshops were organised and delivered in schools around Donegal in the five electoral areas in the lead up to Bike Week The training was delivered by tutors from Pedal Right who has a body of trained tutors trained under the UK proficiency standards. In 2014, the Pedal Right team has to date delivered 7 Safe Cycle Demonstrations to local primary Schools in with 385 pupils participating and 8 Level 1 workshops with 204 pupils participating. Teachers welcomed the training and some expressed an interest in finding out the learning outcomes of the course and two schools are looking at training in the new school year. All schools taking part were delighted to avail of the training and thought it very worthwhile. They also appreciated the fact that the training was free. 32 6. CONCLUSIONS Bike Week and the promotion of cycle related events continue to attract numbers back to cycling; many of the newly established cycling communities have adopted a cycle for all approach to ensure that they can cater for everyone in their community. However club / community participation does require some work given the low numbers of women participating in cycling future programme will require some concerted effort to deliver women only events in order to build the confidence and cycling skills of females. The health and safety of all our road users is paramount and is something which was discussed at our event management seminar held in Letterkenny prior to Bike Week This event provided an opportunity to discuss road safety and risk analysis around cycling and also other sports such as running and walking events. It was agreed to establish a focus group to examine ways to support clubs and communities around cycle safety focusing on training and education. Bike Week 2014 has been a positive addition to Active Donegal Week Initiatives in Donegal with a growing number of events being coordinated at local level by community groups and cycling clubs. They are seen as fun events that can attract all abilities of cyclist and in many instances participation has resulted in greater challenges where cyclist have gone on to compete in sportive s and cycling endurance events.
