3 NORTHERN WHEELS NCRG NEWSLETTER PAGE 3 NCRG President s Message It has been a very busy year getting ready for, and completing the task of hosting the 2018 MAFCA National Convention. Our final meeting was held on October 7, where Al Stoll gave the very successful financial report. Thanks again to all those who supported Trudy Vestal, our Chair for the event. Now it is time to move on to the business of the Northern California Regional Group. The purpose of our regional organization is to celebrate our hobby with activities that can take place between national events and that take advantage of regional talents and venues. In most cases our clubs are within an easy day s drive of each other. This means regional activities are within our reach. Thanks to the Sonoma A s, we can look forward to an NCRG Roundup in May of But what is scheduled beyond that? Nothing. Why? There are several reasons- Cost is one. Hotels in Northern California seem to be very costly. Especially those that can provide the facilities that a Roundup would like to have. Another reason is the competition for our time. It seems, even with those of us who are retired, there is more to do than we can squeeze in. And finally, we are getting older and health is often in the way of planning an out of town event. Clubs facing all these obstacles are reluctant to commit to hosting a Roundup. I believe it is time to reinvent the NCRG. Within the NCRG world, the Roundup is the mainstay. The traditional roundup tries to encompass all things Model A: Car judging, Fashion judging, Hubley races, Gymkhana, and Touring. All are great, but are they too much to fit into one weekend? To do this, a Roundup must be three days, often requiring a three or four night hotel stay. And it is a pretty big burden for a club to put on all those activities. Last year we had a very successful Hub Tour in lieu of a traditional Roundup. How about more Hub Tours for those who like to tour? How about a weekend of fashions, only Fashions? How about a weekend of car games and only car games? How about just Hubley races? Well, you get the idea. We can shorten our event to one or two days lowering the hotel and registration cost and simplifying preparation for the host club. How about the NCRG step up financial support to a host club? How about more simplified Roundups, not less? Let us talk about these and other ideas at our next meeting in Turlock at the Modesto Area A s swap meet in January. Your feedback is welcome. Jim Costello

12 NORTHERN WHEELS NCRG NEWSLETTER PAGE 12 LAST LAUGH What Is The Oldest Profession? A physician, an engineer, and an attorney were discussing who among them belonged to the oldest of the three professions represented. The physician said, "Remember, on the sixth day God took a rib from Adam and fashioned Eve, making him the first surgeon. Therefore, medicine is the oldest profession." The engineer replied, "But, before that, God created the heavens and earth from chaos and confusion, and thus he was the first engineer. Therefore, engineering is an older profession than medicine." Then, the lawyer spoke up. "Yes," he said, "But who do you think created all of the chaos and confusion?" A Plane Flying in the 1930 s In the early 1930's, a farmer and his wife went to a fair. The farmer was fascinated by the airplanes and asked a pilot how much a ride would cost. "$10 for 3 minutes," replied the pilot. "That's too much," said the farmer. The pilot thought for a second and then said, "I'll make you a deal. If you and your wife ride for 3 minutes without uttering a sound, the ride will be free. But if you make a sound, you'll have to pay $10." The farmer and his wife agreed and went for a wild ride. After they landed, the pilot said to the farmer, "I want to congratulate you for not making a sound. You are a brave man." "Maybe so," said the farmer, "But I gotta tell ya, I almost screamed when my wife fell out." Ponderings Collection 42 If cats and dogs didn't have fur would we still pet them? If peanut butter cookies are made from peanut butter, then what are Girl Scout cookies made out of? If space is a vacuum, who changes the bags? If swimming is good for your shape, then why do the whales look the way they do? If tin whistles are made out of tin, what do they make fog horns out of? If white wine goes with fish, do white grapes go with sushi? If you jog backwards, will you gain weight? If you take an Oriental person and spin him around several times, does he become disoriented? Why do the signs that say "Slow Children" have a picture of a running child? Why do they call it "chili" if it's hot?
