1 2018 MAFCA National Convention Convention Event Information Welcome Party And All-You-Can-Eat Pasta Buffet The welcome party will be the first event of the 2018 MAFCA National Convention and the host club, the Sonoma A's, have planned a great event to kick off the week with great food, entertainment and conviviality. It will be your first chance to reconnect with Model A friends, meet other Model A enthusiasts from around the world and sample the outstanding hospitality of the Nugget Resort and Casino. For all of these reasons this initial event is one you don't want to miss! An exciting event planned for the Welcome Party is a Wheel of Fortune game which will have as prizes from the Northern California Regional Group clubs quality wine from the Napa and Sonoma Valleys, olive oil from some of California's premier olive growing regions, almonds from California's premier almond growing areas and many more quality prizes and gifts. You must be present to win so you won't want to miss this special evening! Come hungry. The meal offering is all-you-can-eat pasta. See you there. P a g e 1

2 Awards Banquet End the week at the 2018 MAFCA National Convention the way you began; a dinner and an entertaining evening with your Model A friends, old and new. The social hour will feature a complimentary open bar, courtesy of the Nugget Casino Resort. For the first hour the drinks are on them. The Banquet will start with a spectacular dinner by world renowned Chef Keith. Playing in the background will be a video highlighting the many Convention activities and events you have experienced during the week in Reno Sparks. Awards will be announced and presented during the Banquet. Table Assignments When you pick up your registration packets upon arriving at the Convention, be sure you also stop by the nearby table to select a table assignment for your banquet seating. Each banquet table holds ten people. And, you will only be able to reserve seats for yourself and your family based on your own Convention registration number. If you wish to have other people seated at the same table with you be sure that they join you when you make your table selection. You may not make a seat selection for anyone other than those with your same registration number. Grand Tour What would a Model A Convention be without a Grand Tour? We have a good one for you to flex the muscles of your Model A! The NCRG invites you to spend Thursday touring from the Nugget Casino Hotel to some of the best sights Nevada has to offer. Along the way you will see historic Carson City, the Nevada State Capital, the beautiful blue Lake Tahoe, and awe inspiring views of the Washoe Valley from the summit of Mt. Rose. After departing the Nugget you will travel under the famed Reno Arch, The Biggest Little City in the World, and then South to Carson City where you will see the Old Capitol Building and other historic structures. Carson City was first settled before 1860, around 10 years after gold was discovered in California. Silver was discovered in Virginia City just east of Carson City and with the Silver Comstock era underway, Carson City flourished and many historic buildings and homes of that era have been wonderfully preserved for your enjoyment today. After leaving Carson City you will ascend Spooner Grade to travel along the Northeastern edge of world famous Lake Tahoe. By this time you will be ready for a pit stop at Crystal Bay. Refreshed and ready to drive on, you will travel over Mt. Rose Summit where the view to the east seems to go on forever. Coming down from Mt. Rose gives you a birds eye view of Reno and Sparks. 3 Following your descent from the summit, lunch and a Bluegrass concert await your arrival where the Santa Clara Valley Club has arranged for you to enjoy lunch in a large tree-shaded area and relax to the live music of Hick ry Switch. Tours of the historic mansion will be available during your lunchtime visit. When you are ready, climb into your Model A and return to the Nugget. NCRG extends to you this invitation and we believe that you will look back with satisfaction for having spent a magnificent day exploring Western Nevada. Focus on Fashions By Lynette Marcione Fashion Judging Fashion judging is your opportunity to wear your ensemble and be evaluated by a certified panel of MAFCA judges led by Chief Judge Lois Przywitowski and Assistant Chief Judge Peggy Gill. The judges use MAFCA s Fashion Guidelines as the principle resource. Categories include: Original fashions, Reproduction fashions, and Model A Era Image fashions. Once you register as an entrant you will receive a complete packet of information explaining all the details. In addition, there will be an entrant s meeting prior to judging for face to face instructions, and to answer any questions. Whether you are a first-time entrant, or a seasoned veteran, plan to enjoy a relaxed and fun atmosphere where fashions are the inspiration and focus. To add to your enjoyment, we will have a drawing for $ You will be automatically entered if you compete in fashion judging. For your reference you can access the Fashion Judging Procedures Manual on the MAFCA website P a g e 3

4 at On page 1 of your Registration Form you can indicate your interest in participating in the fashion events. When it comes to fashion events at the Convention, we are all aces. Northern California Regional Group s chapter, the Hangtown A s are hosting fashion judging, and a fashion expo. The fashion tea and awards event will be presented by the Marin A s, also of Northern California s Regional Group. Focus on Fashions Check out the articles titled Entering Fashion Competition, and Jazz It Up for a comprehensive and helpful guide located on the MAFCA website. If you indicate on page 1 of your Registration Form that you would like to participate in fashion judging either as an entrant or as a judge, you will receive more information prior to the Convention. Head to Toe Fashion Expo This one-day event is several seminars rolled into one venue where you can learn, shop, and win prizes. You can see it all at your pace and convenience. Numerous fashion related areas will be represented in a booth-like atmosphere. You will be able to closely view major garments, accessories, coordinated apparel, women s hats, women s footgear, men s fashions, era patterns, era watches and time pieces, Model A Era Image fashions, and shopping for era fashions. There will be subject matter experts in each booth to answer your questions or you can just browse the booths. You will be automatically entered to win several prizes during this event. If you have an era fashion related collection you would like to share, you are invited to contact Lynette Marcione (see next page for contact information) for further details. A fashion boutique will be held at this same event for your shopping or selling convenience. P a g e 4

5 Fashion Tea and Awards This event is hosted by Marin A s. Plan to spend a pleasurable afternoon enjoying refreshments and era fashions. This will be a three-part event. Wearing era fashions at this event is very popular and we encourage you to do so. We added an activity for those of you who would love to model your outfit but don t plan on entering judging. On page 1 of your Registration Form you have an opportunity to sign up to model your ensemble for the audience. Look for For Love of Era Fashions. Check the box if you are interested in this chance to stroll the catwalk and share your wonderful outfit. You will receive helpful instructions prior to the Convention. Space is limited so sign up to share your treasures with fellow Model A enthusiasts. An afternoon English-style tea will be served. Fashion entrants will model their judged ensembles and awards will be presented. 6 Puyallap, Washington Vehicle Judging 2014 Categories in Vehicle Judging Vehicle Judging Original class (White Ribbon) Restored class (Blue Ribbon) Touring class (Red Ribbon) Modified class (Green Ribbon) MAFCA Web Site Downloads Vehicle judging has been a major component at every MAFCA National Convention since 1955 and the 2018 MAFCA National Convention in Sparks, NV will be no exception. The 2016 MAFCA National Convention in Loveland, CO had a wonderful selection of vehicles including coupes, town sedans, closed cab pickups seldom seen deluxe utility trucks and AA trucks. There were vehicles in each classification being judged: original, restored, touring and modified. Every vehicle owner in each of these classes has spent a considerable amount of time, money and effort on their vehicle and the National Convention is an excellent opportunity to see that up close. Vehicles are judged in accordance with a set of standards developed by MAFCA and MARC and are compared to the way each vehicle came from the factory, not against each other. The tool for judging is the Model A Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards (RG&JS) Revision 3, which is a collection of the best information available about the Model A Ford. P a g e 6

7 The Chief Judge for the 2018 Convention in Sparks is Bob Hess. He will oversee the event and provide guidance for the Vehicle Judging event. Judging will span two days with participant s and judge s meetings, vehicle and tool check-in taking place on Monday, June 25 th. Vehicles will be staged on Monday after completing a short mandatory tour and photo shoot. The judge s breakfast meeting and vehicle judging itself will take place on Tuesday, June 26 th. All vehicles will be available for viewing after judging has been completed. Vehicle judging is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the Model A Ford. In Loveland there were 72 judges ranging from Apprentice to Master Judges and we hope to have as many or more in Sparks. As a judge you will see rare vehicles and multiple body styles up close and will gain a greater technical appreciation of the Model A Ford. Would you like to judge in 2018? If so, it is very easy--indicate your interest in doing so on page 1 of the Registration Form. You will be contacted after you register by the Chief Judge with details of the process and will be part of a team of judges with differing levels of experience who are always interested in passing on their knowledge of the Model A Ford. To prepare for a day of vehicle judging you should consider taking some of the judging tests which are available on the MAFCA website ( Be prepared for an enjoyable and fun-filled crash course in the construction details of the Model A Ford! Vehicle Judging Participants Having Your Car Judged Would you like to have your Model A judged? If so, just indicate your interest on page 1 of the Registration Form. The Chief Judge will be in contact with you after you have registered for the Convention to obtain the necessary information about your Model A for his work. Vehicle Judges Helping as a Vehicle Judge If you would like to be a vehicle judge enter your information on page 1 of the Registration Form and the Chief Judge will contact you before the Convention to let you know your job assignment during judging. Your preferences and qualifications will be given consideration in determining the judging assignment you are given. Restorer s Class Vehicle Evaluation Introduction to Restorer s Class The intent of The Restorers Class is to recognize MAFCA members who utilize their Model A Ford vehicle as a driver through its use on today s roads and highways. In consideration of today s modern roads with faster highway speeds, vehicles require improved performance, P a g e 7

8 reliability and safety. This class allows owners to operate their vehicles with original, era and aftermarket parts. While original parts are considered the benchmark, quality replacement parts and accessories with the look of the original part are acceptable. Improved or modern parts such as an overdrive, air conditioner or alternator are permitted but are not evaluated. The Restorer s Class encourages members to maintain their vehicles to a standard that reflects the original design and look, while permitting the owner to operate their vehicle with reliability, safety and comfort. Participants in Restorer s Class Evaluations If you would like to have your car evaluated in the Restorer s Class be sure to indicate that on page 1 of your Registration Form. You will receive more information when you arrive at the Convention. Evaluators for Restorer s Class If you would like to be a vehicle evaluator mark that on page 1 of your Registration Form also. You will receive more information from the Chief Evaluator prior to the Convention. Technical Seminars Model A Brakes and Pedal Adjustment Presenter: Les Andrews Hear a complete description that explains how the braking system is designed to work most effectively. There will be an explanation of the step-by-step procedure for adjusting the front wheel brakes so they engage first. That secret will give you greater positive braking power. Hubley Speed Shop Presenter: Bob Johnson An award winning Hubley racer will divulge some of his secrets for how to make your Hubley model car travel down the track faster. Subjects will also include which Hubley model to use, wheels, tires, axles, axle screws, steering, weight, aerodynamics, and modified cars. P a g e 8

9 Model A Wiring and Troubleshooting Presenter: To Be Determined A complete description of the Model A wiring, how to install it and how to troubleshoot and test each harness. Also learn about wire sizes, connection types, and routing. Do It Right: Using the Guidelines to Restore and Buy Parts Lead Presenter: Tom Rut Using original parts, the latest techniques and the newest information in the Restoration Guidelines to restore, repair, maintain and buy parts for your Model A. This seminar will emphasize the correct assembly and parts details you need to ensure your Model A is operating safely and as Henry Ford intended. This seminar will be of value to all owners whether they are restorers, tourers or drivers of the Model A. Bus Tours Fallon Naval Air Station Hellman-Ehrman Mansion MS Dixie II Lake Tahoe Fallon Naval Air Station Arriving at Fallon Naval Air Station (NAS) we will be met for our private tour of this famous Top Gun facility. Your base tour will include the control tower and Air Park, four bombing ranges, the electronic warfare range and all of its other excellent training facilities. Most of the sequences of the aircraft maneuvering over land in the movie Top Gun were shot at Fallon NAS. Following your tour enjoy a buffet lunch in the Officers cafeteria. P a g e 9

10 NOTE: If you plan to attend this tour you must complete the required information form which is on page 10 of the Convention Registration Form file. This security screening form is mandatory because everyone must be approved by the Navy in advance of the tour date. If you do not submit a completed security information form you will not be permitted to go on this tour. They will check IDs on the bus to be sure you are on the list. Dinner Dance Cruise Onboard the MS Dixie II Board your motor coach at the Nugget Casino and travel to Lake Tahoe, the largest Alpine Lake in North America. Travel through the historic town of Truckee, past Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 winter Olympics. At Zephyr Cove you will board the historic paddle wheeler, M.S. Dixie II. Enjoy this fabulous cruise across Lake Tahoe and around Emerald Bay while you enjoy a delicious dinner and then dance the night away! Lake Tahoe Cruise Onboard the MS Dixie II Depart from the Nugget Hotel and travel to beautiful world renowned Lake Tahoe. Upon arrival at Zephyr Cove you will have time to take photos, walk on the beach and put your toes in this pristine alpine lake. Your 2.5-hour tour of the lake aboard M.S. Dixie II will be fully narrated. You will learn about the history and folklore surrounding this special place. Food will be available for purchase on board the boat. Truckee and Lake Tahoe Including the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion You will leave from the Nugget Casino and travel a short distance to the historic town of Truckee where you can enjoy the quaint downtown with its charming shops and superb restaurants set in truly historic buildings. Then it s off toward Lake Tahoe to visit the Gate Keepers Museum and Fanny Bridge. We arrive at Sugar Pine Point State Park, home to the Hellman-Ehrman Mansion, built in 1897, to experience the grand but informal summer home, called Pine Lodge, considered to be one of the finest mansions in the high Sierra with magnificent views of this alpine lake. You will enjoy a picnic lunch under the pine trees. To select a bus tour, mark your Registration Form on pages 2, 3 or 4 and add the cost to your Convention Registration total amount. Bus tours have been planned in conjunction with Patty s Tours of Reno. P a g e 10

11 Self-Guided Tours The 2018 National Convention is offering several self-guided tours. Take the tours at your own leisure without having to keep up with those in front of you. The provided directions and maps make it easy to find your way. Selected tour routes to various places around the Reno and Sparks area give you a variety of things to do and see. The tours will include three major lakes (Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake and Pyramid Lake). Also included are several historic towns (Virginia City, Carson City and Truckee). Museums will include the National Auto Museum of Reno, the Western Pacific Train Museum of Portola, and museums in Virginia City. Train rides are available on the V & T Railroad in Virginia City and at the Western Pacific Train Museum in Portola. There will be tour routes to two shopping malls as well (the Outlets at Legends, in Sparks and the Summit Shopping Center of Reno). The tours will vary in distance from as short as seven miles to as long as 160 miles and various lengths in between. They will take you into the High Deserts of Nevada and the High Sierra of California. Additional information will be available on self-guided tours in the hospitality room. Virginia City Take a tour back in time to a boomtown, when silver was discovered in the Comstock Mine. Virginia City sprang up as a result of this silver find. At the height of production in the mid- 1870's, as many as 25,000 people lived in Virginia City. By 1878, the silver was running out and the city died, leaving all its old buildings, stores and mines to be enjoyed and explored by you a century later. The V & T Railroad offers daily rides pulled behind a vintage steam engine. Truckee and Donner Lake Enjoy the drive over Mount Rose Highway, to Lake Tahoe and Incline Village. Tour along the north shore of Lake Tahoe through Crystal Bay and Kings Beach, then over Highway 267 into Truckee and on to Donner Lake. Return to Sparks via Interstate 80. Overall this tour is about 90 miles. (52 miles via Mount Rose Lake Tahoe and 36 miles via Interstate 80) Pyramid Lake Drive out to Pyramid Lake Visitor Center via Pyramid Way and Hwy 446. Distance out is 43 miles and drive time is about 55 minutes. Return to Sparks the same way or take Hwy 447 to Interstate 80 West. This distance is 45 miles and will take about 60 minutes. 12 Portola Train Museum Tour north on Hwy 395 into California and onto Hwy 70 West to the Portola Train Museum. This route is 50 miles, and it will take about one hour. Return to Sparks via Highway 89 across High Sierra mountain roads to Truckee and onto Interstate 80. This return trip is about 84 miles and will take about two hours in a Model A. The museum fee is $8.00 for adults. Lake Tahoe The Lake Tahoe tour will take you around the complete 72-mile circumference of the lake. Adding to that, about 74 miles getting to and from the lake, will make the total tour distance 146 miles. Driving time will be about five hours without stops. There is a lot to see and do. There are vista points, tram rides at Heavenly Valley, casinos at the South shore of Lake Tahoe, a boat museum in Tahoe City and much, much, more. Costs will depend on the activities you choose along the way. National Auto Museum The National Auto Museum of Reno is one of the finest auto museums you will ever visit. It is the descendent of the original collection owned by Bill Harrah. The drive is about 3.5 miles and will take about 10 minutes. Your tour will take about two to three hours to see it all. Open Monday-Saturday from 9:30-5:30 and on Sunday from 10:00-4:00. Fees are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors. Animal Ark Tour out to Animal Ark in Reno via Highway 395 and North Virginia Street to a reserve for rescued wild animals. Overall this tour is about 52 miles out and back. It takes roughly 60 minutes each way. Animal Ark is closed on Mondays. No pets are allowed. Fees are $10.00 for adults, $9.00 for seniors 62+, and $6.50 for children Children 2 and under are free. Outlets at Legends The Outlets at Legends, in Sparks, is an enclosed shopping mall with approximately 40 stores and restaurants. It is smaller than the Summit Mall, but is known for its upscale stores. The drive to the outlets is about three miles and takes about 10 minutes. P a g e 12

13 The Summit Shopping Center The Summit Shopping Center in Reno is an open-air shopping mall. With over 60 stores, it provides a good selection from which to choose. It also has seven restaurants. The drive over to the mall is about 13 miles and takes about ½ hour. There are no Convention Registration fees for any of the self-guided tours. Gymkhana Sometime called car games, gymkhana is an event open to all registered Model A vehicles. If you wish to participate be ready with your car on Friday, June 29 th. From 8:00 am to 12:00 noon in the East parking lot you will be able to show up and enter as a contestant. These car games are designed to test your skill at driving while coordinating other activities as you move from challenge to challenge. Awards are given for the best results. If you would like to participate and share in the fun, mark page 4 of your Registration Form and include the fee in your total payment. Hubley Derby Hubley Derby Rules MAFCA s web site offers a description of the rules that apply to Hubley model car racing. If you would like to review them, go to Event Procedures If you wish to participate, so indicate on Page 3 of the Registration Form and submit a completed Page 11 with your completed Registration Form. There will be 2 classes of racing. Standard and Modified. P a g e 13

14 Class 1: Standard Age Group 1: Youth Under 10 years old Age Group 2: Youth 10 to 17 years old Age Group 3: Adult 18 and over Class 2: Modified All Ages in One Group The Standard Class is divided by age group. The Modified Class is for all ages. Please see class specifications on the Hubley Registration Form on Page 11 of the Registration File. The track is 3 lanes wide and 40 feet long. The format is side-by side racing on the 3-lane track with single elimination races until the age group champion is determined. Awards will be presented for the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place car in each of the 4 classes listed above. Hospitality A hospitality room will be available during the Convention for your enjoyment, meeting friends and socializing with other Model A owners. It will be on the 5 th floor in the poolside terrace room, the same room as the MAFCA booth and the Pick-A-Prize event. You will have a view overlooking the hotel swimming pool and, from the outside terrace, other interesting sights in the Sparks area. Sonora A s, your host for this event, is planning endless refreshments and snacks for you so you will be fully fueled when you take off for the day on the many Convention activities. Their plans are to have it open throughout the Convention so it becomes the central meeting place of registrants. Be sure to join your friends here for a bit of affability and conversation! 15 Pick-A-Prize A highlight of all national Conventions is the Pick-A-Prize room will be no exception. You can expect to find some amazing tools, Model A parts, and even some really big, heavy, important stuff. The major raffle items we are offering in Sparks are a Model A engine rebuilt by Les Andrews and a Mitchell overdrive, a two-night stay at the spectacularly scenic Rocky Point Ranch, a B&B in Thompson Falls, Montana, for two people and two nights, plus several other items which are currently being negotiated. From Trudy Vestal, there will be a complete Model A Era Image outfit, complete with dress, shoes, gloves, hat and all the necessary accessories, all correct and ready for judging. A complete set of 22 Diablo A's Technical Seminar Series DVDs, crafts, food items, wine and fashion items will round out the opportunities offered. And, remember you can t win unless you buy a ticket! Buy your tickets early and enter often because the big prize could go home with you. Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Information about Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings will be in your registration package when you arrive at the Convention. She works with over 25 suppliers to provide the best of what is available. They also offer great used and original parts. They will bring their entire line of new parts and a wide selection of used to be purchased at the MAFCA National Convention in Sparks, NV. They will be able to order parts for overnight delivery or two-day shipping from their suppliers, if necessary, for a price according to urgency and shipping costs. They are also taking orders ahead of time. If you know what parts you will need, call or ahead of time and she will have it ready for easy pick up at the MAFCA National Convention.
