1 Alta PACELINE Volume Alpina Cycling Club 10 Issue 5 July Alta Alpina Challenge Michael Bayer, Ride Director On Saturday June 30 the clubʼs showcase event, the Alta Alpina Challenge: Riding the Wild Sierra, exceeded all our expectations. Thank you to all the volunteers, participants, sponsors, and agencies who came together to make it possible! This ride changes peopleʼs lives. Participants from as far away as Japan trained for months. Some people were riding their very first organized ride and others were going for the personal best on the 8 pass course, but for just about everyone this day represented one of the greatest challenges of their lives. Members of Alta Alpina should be very proud indeed Inside this issue: Alta Alpina Challenge 1-3 Presidential Posting 4 Thursday Races 4 Rush to Washoe 5 Riding in Italy 6 Board Meeting Minutes 7 Thanks to the year-round efforts of Laura Caimi and her far-flung marketing team of club members, enthusiastic repeat participants, and supporting cycling organizations, we had nearly 400 riders out on the road. Mike Turek organized the health permits and the kitchen at Turtle Rock Park and with the help of an awesome team of volunteers from the club and Hung A Lel Ti community of the Washoe Tribe served meals to participants and volunteers from 3:00am to midnight. Jim Harris pulled together the HAM radio infrastructure for the event including specially outfitting his RV and recruiting more HAM radio operators. Along with the team of mobile HAM operators, SAG drivers, motorcycle SAGs, course ambulance, NHP, Alpine County Sheriffʼs deputies, volunteer doctors and nurses, and the coordination of Kevin Willitts and Curtis Fong we once again produced an event with no serious injuries. I wish I had room here to recognize the significant contributions of each and every club member who stepped up, got involved, and made an impact. I hope that everyone can attend the volunteer BBQ later this summer (date still TBD) where Iʼll get the opportunity to do so in person. I do want to mention a few other special volunteers whose efforts stretched over much of the year: Dennis Pederson wrote and maintained the software for the online registration system; Lauren Lindley coordinated sponsorships; Peter Costa handled finances, medical team coordination and supplies, as well as the Monitor rest stop; Robert Braun managed and organized the club storage unit and the materials therein as well as the Kingsbury rest stop; Twain Berg aggressively promoted the event online and organized the Blue Lakes rest stop; last but not least Jennie Hamiter did everything that might have fallen between the cracks and put up with me working day and night for the last year. Wrap-up of this yearʼs event continues and work has already begun for next year. Make an entry in your calendar now for June 29, Please let me know if you can help with the work for Thanks to the club members and volunteers, I was fortunate to experience the wondrous, majestic views of the Sierra riding for the first time. The supportive, welcoming volunteers, who were patient to answer all questions at sign up and at rest stops, regarding ascents, views, and passes, not only rendered the experience wonderful, but actually helped me push myself and do the three passes I signed up for. Every volunteer I met contributed to the sum of a great day. I find it amazing that so many people take so much of their time just to make other people happy. --Naama, Campbell CA Lunch Stop: Mike Turek and the Cleymaet Family

4 Page 4 PACELINE Presidential Posting Mel Maalouf, President It is hard to imagine a better challenge, the Alta Alpina Challenge. While the ride itself speaks for itself, the challenge of pulling off such a wide ranging ride with respect to all the different levels that can take their own personal challenge with the number and quality of rest stops is a challenge accompli. While it takes a lot of work by a lot of people, the workload always seems like soft pedaling as always when volunteering for cycling events. It seems like the clock flies by so quickly and the pulls not so tiring since this is a sport that we all enjoy. The buzz of cycling events always pushes up spirits and energy levels for both the riders and volunteers. Details of the ride will be forthcoming in this issue and following issues so I won't duplicate. The junior team did general help on Friday and parking setup. Like we have done for about a dozen years, we slept under the stars and woke for the early morning parking crew work. later that day we didn't let the opportunity escape for us to bag a pass. This year during the Challenge and during Junior Team training, 5 riders rode their first major pass. It is quite a good feeling to guide these kids up their first pass and then coach them down safely with them finishing the second half without fear and the exhilarating feeling of letting the brakes go and allowing gravity to take over. This year the junior team has seen a rewarding resurgence with new riders finding the tempo and returning riders setting the tempo at higher and higher levels. I look forward to working with the kids in the coming years and seeing even more kids learn to ride bikes. 6 Page 6 PACELINE Riding in Italy John Cotter We spent the month of May visiting Italy. We spent almost the entire month touring in Northern Italy on our bikes. We spent the majority of our time riding with Bill Speckman our guide and the owner of Your Cycling Italia bike touring company in Semonza, Italy. Bill Speckman tours consisted of day rides from a hotel located at the base of the Monte Grappa. We would ride each day, usually in the mornings unless it was raining, to various places such as the Asiago plateau, Foza, the walled city of Asolo or the town of Follina in the heart of the Prosecco wine region to name a few. Our final ride with Bill was up the Monte Grappa, a 18 mile climb with about 5600 feet of climbing. Our rides would always consist of a few hours of riding and then a stop for cappuccino and brioche and then a few more hours of riding back to the hotel for a 3-course lunch. The afternoons were filled with visiting walled cities such as Marostica, museums, bike shops and gelaterias. During our visit to Italy we went to four stages of the Giro dʼitalia. We saw the team time trial in Verona, the finish in Vedelago and the start in Treviso, where we were fortunate enough to have our picture taken with Giovanni the founder of Pinarello. Our favorite stage was when we rented a car and drove to Agordo to ride up the Passo Duran were we watched the Giro come by on their way to Cortina. We took a few side trips by train to visit Milan, Lake Como, Venice and Salzburg, Austria. Everywhere we went we found the people of Italy to be friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious and always fresh. We also took a couple days to bike tour on our own. We rode up the Brenta River on a beautiful bike path that would take you into Austria if one wanted to keep riding. We rode as far as Caldonazzo a beautiful little town on a lake at the base of the Dolomites. Our trip to Italy was wonderful. We enjoyed every moment - the riding, the food, the sites, the Giro and the people we spent time with. We look forward to going back again very soon!

Only four negative items to discuss: incident of damaged bike; an unhappy volunteer; one rider who got sick 28 hours after ride, and one food complaint. Decisions going forward: volunteer BBQ date; if we have enough income this year we should buy pre-printed cone-top directional signs printed; we would like to invest in plastic boxes and shelving in the storage unit; consider buying an additional tent for the club.
