1 Freedom of Information Request Reference No: I note you seek access to the following information: 1. Could you please confirm how many bikes were reported stolen by members of the public in the last three calendar years (if this exceeds time constraints please confirm the information for the last two years or even in the last year.) Could this information be broken down into Boroughs if possible? 2. Could you also confirm how many of these bikes that were reported as stolen were successfully returned to their rightful owners. 3. Approximately how long do the Met Police spend investigating a stolen bike after receiving the initial report? 4. How long are bikes held by the police and then what happens if it is uncollected by an owner. 5. Could you please give me a figure of how much money (if any) was made by the Metropolitan Police in the last three years (if this exceeds time constraints please confirm the information for the last two years or even in the last year) from selling on recovered bikes to traders/for scrap/ etc? 6. Are any bikes recovered by the police sold for charity, if so, how many per year from the last three years (if this exceeds time constraints please confirm the information for the last two years or even in the last year)? And what charity does any money raised go towards? DECISION I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full. Please find below information pursuant to your request above. 1. Could you please confirm how many bikes were reported stolen by members of the public in the last three years (if this exceeds time constraints please confirm the information for the last two years or even in the last year.) Could this information be broken down into Boroughs if possible? 2. Could you also confirm how many of these bikes that were reported as stolen were successfully returned to their rightful owners. Please refer to the attached document.

2 3. Approximately how long do the Met Police spend investigating a stolen bike after receiving the initial report? The length of time taken to investigate a stolen bike will depend on a range of factors which will be different in each circumstance. It is therefore not possible to provide a definitive answer to this. 4. How long are bikes held by the police and then what happens if it is uncollected by an owner. Property for disposal, both crime related and property found in the streets which includes bikes is submitted to a Central Store for disposal if not restored to their owner. In relation to bikes, disposal may include scrap metal or auction. 5. Could you please give me a figure of how much money (if any) was made by the Metropolitan Police in the last three years (if this exceeds time constraints please confirm the information for the last two years or even in the last year) from selling on recovered bikes to traders/for scrap/etc? This information is not available in relation to bikes only. (If required this information is available in relation to ALL crime related and property found in the streets, but bikes would be a very small percentage). 6. Are any bikes recovered by the police sold for charity, if so, how many per year from the last three years (if this exceeds time constraints please confirm the information for the last two years or even in the last year)? And what charity does any money raised go towards? Monies realised from crime related property (which may include bikes) is paid into the Police Property Act Fund which goes to charitable purposes. A scheme commenced on 8th July 2013 in which low value bikes are being managed in partnership with "Bikeworks"; and all new requests for bikes will now be considered directly by Bikeworks. It is understood that Bikeworks will charge a minimum of 10 per cycle to cover their costs, including ensuring the safety of all raw stock. Bikeworks will ensure bikes have had frames check for alignment, both seat post and handle bar stem are not seized. Where bikes will be stripped for spare parts to carry out repairs or refurbishment Bikeworks may reconsider their charges. The MPS hold no records of the request made to Bikeworks or how many bikes they may have supplied to charities. Information Rights Unit
