16 About Lee Valley VeloPark Lee Valley VeloPark features the velodrome, which was used at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and a remodelled Olympic BMX, alongside five miles (8km) of challenging mountain bike trails and a one mile (1.6km) floodlit road circuit the only venue in the world to offer these four cycling activities in one place. Lee Valley VeloPark is the fastest in the world and holds more world records than any other velodrome. In the first year of opening over 400,000 people walked through the doors of the iconic Lee Valley VeloPark. Around 200,000 of those visited the venue to soak up the atmosphere. More than 120,000 came to watch world class events and over 100,000 people cycled on one of the four circuits. Lee Valley VeloPark has had over 1.5 million visitors since opening in Olympic Champion Sir Chris Hoy and Team GB were consulted during the design process of the 6,000 capacity velodrome to ensure the best conditions for athletes were created. It was Sir Chris idea to have essential facilities in the centre, which are affectionately referred to by venue staff as Chris Hoy s toilets. The outer cladding of the velodrome is made from 5,000m² of Western Red Cedar timber. 92m³ of Siberian pine was used to create the velodrome and 300,000 nails were used to fix the surface together. It took 98 weeks for the velodrome build to be completed and a specialist team of 26 carpenters eight weeks to install the. The steepest sections of the are at 42 degrees, hence the name of the venue s café.
