Discuss the basic relationship between the three. b) The term "Level of Service" (LOS) is a qualitative measure describing operational conditions within a traffic stream. List and describe each of these levels of service. c) In the analysis of capacity, level of service and degree of saturation there are a number of factors that impact on the actual capacity of the roadway. List and discuss the effect of any four (4) of these factors. QUESTION 4 (8 Marks) a) Define and distinguish between the terms uninterrupted traffic flow and interrupted traffic flow. b) When analysing the capacity of roads under uninterrupted flow conditions four (4) road types are generally examined, namely: 1. single lane flow n. two-lane, two-way roads 111. multi-lane roads (divided and undivided) IV. freeways Define each of the above four ( 4) road types and indicate features of each that are most likely to influence the capacity (performance) of that road type. QUESTIONS (8 Marks) a) Describe fully in your own words your understanding of the term 'Road Network Management'. b) There are two basic approaches to managmg transport, supply management and demand management Give a brief description of each and include strategies on how each one can be achieved. c) The primary function or balance of different road functions may be reflected in the classification of a road. In its purest form, road classification consists of two basic road types which have fundamentally different traffic and environmental goals. List and describe the functions of the two road types. Explain the terminology LATM and how it is different from other aspects of traffic management. b) The primary target of LA TM is to change driver behaviour, both directly by physical influence on vehicle operation, and indirectly by influencing the driver's perception of what is appropriate behaviour in that street. One of the primary objectives of LATM is to minimise the risk of a crash occurring. List four (4) treatments that could be employed within an LATM scheme that would reduce the risk of a crash occurring. c) In LATM planning, many devices introduce additional complexities for cyclist/pedestrian/driver interaction and therefore separation in the vicinity of treatments may be desirable. What do you consider are the general principles that should be followed when determining the placement and nature of LA TM devices? QUESTION9 (12 Marks) a) IV. V. From a road user support perspective, the main fields of road network operations are: Network monitoring Maintaining road serviceability and safety Traffic control Travel aid and user information Demand management Explain in detail each of these five operations and give an example of each. b) What is your understanding of Traffic Control Devices (TCDs )? Describe their main functions. Detail the operation of three (3) TCDs. c) Why is the provision of Parking so important for successful Traffic/Transport Management?
