1 SKI TRACKS MT. BACHELOR SPORTS EDUCATION FOUNDATION RACE TRAINING CENTER NEWSLETTER Volume 11, Number 4 Apr 2008 Greetings From The Director by Chuck Kenlan Happy Spring Everyone! Most of the MBSEF programs are either finished or winding down. It has been a great season and the staff is thrilled with the successes of our athletes. In our definition of success, we try not to focus on results but on the improvements our athletes have made over the course of the season and their enthusiasm for the sports we coach. We are, however, only human. When MBSEF athletes have success in the results of their competitions, the coaches and staff can t help but puff out their chests a little bit. I think it s important to highlight a few of these accomplishments. In the Alpine Program, three athletes readily come to mind. These three are currently on the US Ski Team. Kevin Francis, after coming off two serious injuries, won the Nor-Am Super-G title and earned himself guaranteed World Cup starts for the season. Soon after that accomplishment, Kevin stood at the top of the podium winning the Super-G at the US National Championships. That s right, Kevin is a National Champion! Also at the Nationals, Tommy Ford and Laurenne Ross both took second place in the GS races. They also both finished in the top ten overall at the World Junior Championships with Tommy finishing 4 th in the GS. We are excited to see them carry their successes into next season. On a side note, each of these skiers went through MWC head coach Mike Evans. I truly believe that Mike is one of the best youth coaches in the Nation. We are very lucky to have Mikey on our team. In the Nordic Program, Dartmouth sophomore and MBSEF athlete Dakota Blackhorse von-jess returned to train with our program this year and qualified 3rd in the National Championships sprint race only to have his ski stepped on in the quarter finals. Dakota then went on to lead the Dartmouth Ski Team to the NCAA Championships. A LOOK INSIDE Let's Ride!!! Page 3 MWC Team Photo Page 4 MBSEF Awards Banquet Page 5 Giddy Up Tommy Ford! We are looking forward to seeing him continue his success next year. Snowboard athlete Katie Williams took 7 th place in the Slopestyle at the US Open Snowboard Championships. This is an incredible result because the competition was full of X Games competitors and Grand Prix winners. Katie made the commitment to come back and train full time after graduating from high school last year. We are very proud of Katie and hope that result will help open more doors for Katie to compete at higher levels. continued on page 4 UPCOMING EVENTS March 26-Apr 1 Alpine Western Junior Championships Apr PNSA Masters Championships Apr 12 Skyliners Summer Sports Swap Apr 12 5th Annual Mike Puddy Memorial Race Apr Alpine Northwest Cup Finals Apr Banff Mountain Film Festival Apr May Day Races Apr 26 MBSEF Annual Awards Banquet Apr 27 Potluck JRC after May Day Race (pg 2) May 17 U.S. Bank Pole Pedal Paddle May 18 Kids Mini Pole Pedal Paddle July 9-13 BMC Cascade Cycling Classic

8 MBSEF SKI TRACKS Zig Zag P a g e 8 Central America Adventure By Adam R. Sather Head Snowboard Travel Coach Editor's Note: This is the fourth and last part of Adam's excellent adventure last summer! Continued from page 7 of the March newsletter, Adam has just crossed the border into Panama, and is headed to Baru. The next morning was bluebird. I could see the top of the volcano and it looked really close. I packed up and hit the road. It was 15 kilometers to the park entrance and another 16 kilometers to the summit. Not so close. The trail was actually a really rugged 4wd road. On my way up a jeep passed by. I couldn t believe that a vehicle could make it up there. The terrain was gorgeous. When I was about six kilometers from the summit it started to rain. It was windy and cold. I put on my garbage sack rain suit and continued on. The last few kilometers were steep and I was tired and cold. I kept going and before I knew it I started to see radio towers. I had made it. It was about 30 degrees and raining. I was pretty miserable but in good spirits as I was at the tallest point in Panama. I found an open door to a small metal shack. There was a worker inside. He took a picture of me with my camera and let me in to get warm. I was highly unprepared for climbing above feet so I was fortunate to have a place to get out of the weather. I had a great time socializing with this guy. He showed me around the place and showed me what he did to run the microwave towers. He stays on top for two weeks and then gets two weeks off. I asked him if I could stay in one of the buildings. He said he would find out. He took me to another small building where two police officers were. They asked me some questions and had me sign a log in sheet. Then took me over to a different building let me in and said to lock the door in the morning. I was very grateful that they were helping me out. I know I could have camped out and been fine but with their help I was more comfortable. I gave the guy 3 dollars for helping me out. He was stoked on free cash. The weather cleared for the last couple hours of daylight and I was able to see the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. After not sleeping so well on the concrete floor of the building, I packed up and headed down the other side of the volcano. I had read that it was possible to go that way but the trail was small and hard to follow. It sounded better than the 4wd road and I wanted to see new terrain. The trail was steep and dangerous. I took my time to enjoy the scenery. As I got down a few kilometers I realized that I hadn t told anybody where I was going. If I got hurt or lost nobody would know where to look for me. I thought that was pretty stupid of me. As I went down the mountain, the brush grew thicker and the trail became smaller. Pretty soon I was in the jungle canopy and the trail was hard to follow. I knew the general direction though, DOWN!!! So I just worked my way through the cobwebs and bushes trying not to get bit by anything. It was actually really fun since I m not afraid of insects, spiders, and other animals. After a few hours in the thick of the jungle I popped out into a field. I walked through fields for awhile and finally hit a road. Just down the road I run into a young farmer and he tells me the way to Bambito. He walked with me for a few kilometers asking me where I had been and where I was going. He answered some questions I had about Panama and then I thanked him for the directions and headed to Bambito. From Bambito I decided to head back toward Costa Rica. I was getting a little lonely and I wanted to get back to Avellanas to surf for the last week and a half of my trip. So I stuck my thumb out and was on my way. It took me just two full days to get back to Avellanas. Peter was happy to see me and was really eager to hear about my adventures. It was nice to be back to surfing and hanging on the beach. The rest of the trip flew by and I was sad to go but I couldn t wait to get home. The trip changed my life and I still can t believe I made it to all those places. I had a great time and I can t wait to go on another adventure. I would highly recommend traveling in another country. Traveling alone can be dangerous but take extra precautions and it can be done safely. Thanks for listening to my story and I look forward to sharing the next one.
