2 1 INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES During the World War II, concrete was used in making warships. After this, countries like the USA, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden and UAE started making concrete canoes. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) conducts National Concrete Canoe Competition every year ( This is a highly successful program and students from various universities make their own concrete canoe and participate in this competition.the science and technology behind the making of concrete canoe has developed significantly in the past several years. For example, advanced software programs are used to perform the structural design and stability analysis. Also, advanced materials (carbon fibers, glass fibers, polystyrene, rubber,admixtures, glass microspheres, etc.) are used to build light-weight and high-strength concrete. The construction procedure also plays a vital role in achieving the desired structural/material properties and stability/safety of the canoe. It is really a thrilling experience to design and build and concrete canoe and finally row it in water, which a layman would find very hard to believe. Taking the experiences from abroad, IIT Madras also made two concrete canoes in the recent past. These floating concrete canoes were displayed during the ICI-Fest 2013 and CEA Fest 2014 held at IIT Madras. A 7-minute video on our experience in the making of concrete canoe is available at Now, IIT Madras is associating with the Indian Concrete Institute to launch the National Concrete Canoe Competition (NC3) The participants will design and build and a two-seater canoe and transport it to IIT Madras for the raceduring the CEA Fest at IIT Madras in the first week of March 2015.The NC3 will provide a platform for the students to showcase and expand their engineering and interpersonal skills. The winning team(s) will be featured in the Concrete Matters (monthly newsletter published by Indian Concrete Institute) and The Masterbuilder magazine, which is a widely circulated construction magazine. Details on this competition is provided at 2 GENERAL RULES 1. Each team shall have a maximum of 12 persons (with minimum 2 boys and minimum 2 girls) 2. Each team shall have a designated Faculty Advisor 3. The canoe must be designed by a team of bonafide studentspursuing Civil/Architecture/Ocean Engineering program at any AICTE approved University/Engineering College in India. 4. If required, the mould for casting the canoe can be prepared by professionals other than the team members. All other works (design, construction, testing, etc.) must be performed by the team members. 5. The length, width, and height of your canoe must be less than or equal to 3.5, 0.6, and 0.7 m, respectively. 6. Paddles are not supposed to be fixed to the canoe. 7. Paddlers can sit on mats, stools, or cushions (not taller than 10cm). 3 3 RESTRICTIONS ON MATERIALS USED 3.1 CONCRETE MATERIALS Commercially available pre-packaged or pre-mixed concrete, mortar, or grout cannot be used. The minimum amount of ordinary Portland cement should be 30% (by weight) of the total weight of the cementitious/binder materials. Fly ash, slag, silica fume, metakaolin, and other commercially available supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) can be used as mineral admixtures. Commercially available chemical admixtures (superplasticizers, retarders, etc.) can be used. However, waterproofing agents should not be used. The volume of fine aggregates must be more than 25% of the total volume of the concrete. Natural and/or artificial materials can be used as fine aggregates to attain certain desired properties. All materials used have to be mentioned in the data sheet provided in APPENDIX-A. 3.2 PAINTING Canoe can be painted in color for enhancing the aesthetic appearance. However, the bottom surface of the canoe (the surface in contact with the water) should not be painted. The names of the institute and sponsors (if any) shall be painted on the side face(s) of the canoe. 4 IMPORTANT DATES March 30th, 2015 Closing of Registration April 30 th, 2015 Submission of Interim Report-1 May 30th, 2015 Submission of Interim Report-2 August 7th, 2015 Submission of Final Report August 22-23, 2015 Canoe Competition / Race 5 RACE TRACK \The canoe race will be conducted in a towing tank (80m long 3.6m wide 2.9m deep). The race track is m long. A 30 m safety margin is provided for decelerating the canoe after crossing the finish line.to ensure safety, paddlers must wear life jackets, which will be provided by the organizers.

4 6 REPORT Participating teams will submit 3 reports (2 interim reports and a final report). These 3 reports will be evaluated and considered for selecting the winners. All the reports must use A4 size papers. If required, a maximum of one A3size paper with drawings can be used.each report must be submitted in the form of ONE PDF file or a bound hardcopy. All the reports must follow the following formats: Times New Roman; 12 point size; 1 inch margin on all sides; 1.15 inch spacing between the lines. This is to ensure that all the teams get equal amount of space for reporting. These reports should contain the following items. 6.1 INTERIM REPORT-1 (Max. 5 pages excluding the cover page) Completed stability design Completed structural design Status on material design and testing Construction procedure and cost estimation Summary and conclusions 6.2 INTERIM REPORT-2 (Max. 10 pages excluding the cover page) Completed stability design (include updated design, if any) Completed structural design (include updated design, if any) Completed material design and test data Mould design/fabrication, construction procedure and cost estimation Summary and conclusions Future Plan/Schedule 6.3 FINAL REPORT (Max. 15 pages excluding the cover page) Objective Stability design Structural design Material design Construction procedure Project management and Cost Analysis Summary of sustainable and innovative approaches Summary and conclusions A copy of the completed registration form NOTE: The internet provides significant information on the designing and building of concrete canoe. However, if solicited by the teams, the organizers can assist in procuring relevant documents (technical papers, codes, references, etc.).
