1 SHAVINGS Volume One - Number One November 1978 NEW OFFICERS AND TRUSTEES The Center for Wooden Boats held its first annual business meeting October 3, electing the following officers and trustees to one-year terms. OFFICERS President - Dick Wagner, "our founder," and proprietor of The Old Boathouse, 2770 Westlake Ave. North, Seattle, WA (Phone ) Vice-President - Pat Ford, boat builder and chandler, P.O. Box 801, Bothell, WA (Phone ) Secretary - Ted Cooper, th Avenue N.E., Seattle, WA (Phone ) Treasurer - George Weldin, Edgecliff Drive, Seattle, WA (Phone ) TRUSTEES Ray Aliberti, Pete Becker, Bob Chapel, Sally Dickman, Gloria Grandaw, Rip Knot, Marty Loken, Phillip Mallinson, Rowland Messer, Charlie Olsheski, Ron Render, Myron Richards, Jamey Thompson, Carlyn Tucker, Colleen Wagner, Land Washburn, John Watson. Other highlights of the October meeting: * Marty Loken, secretary-treasurer during the Center's first year, reported that the group had $2,800 and 70 paid members as of October 1. * Dick Wagner, Rip Knot and Bob Chapel volunteered to study grants given recently by the National Trust for Historic Preservation (Maritime Division), to see if The Center for Wooden Boats might wish to apply for National Trust grants in the future. Competition for maritime grants apparently is tough the National Trust offered $280,000 to 19 organizations recently, after receiving requests for more than $7 million. So far, the Center's attempts at grantsmanship have been on a far smaller scale at press time, we were waiting to hear about our mini-grant application to the Washington Commission for the Humanities (for restoration of the 31-foot rowing gig), and a King County Block Grant application to rebuild two smaller boats, the 14'-7" Metlakatla Boat, and 14'-3" Acme Boat Works skiff. * Dick Wagner offered another report on our search for a permanent site, concluding that the Center should continue looking into availability of the so-called "asphalt plant," a prime piece of waterfront adjoining the U.S. Naval Reserve facility on Lake Union. One distinct longer-range possibility is that several maritime groups will combine efforts to create a Historic Seaport on Lake Union the Virginia V Foundation, Northwest Seaport, Historic Seattle, The Center for Wooden Boats, and the U.S. Navy. The result could be a spectacular maritime museum and waterfront park featuring the smallest and largest traditional watercraft found in the Northwest... from 7-foot prams (we have enough of those) to the old codfishing schooner Wawona. The Center for Wooden Boats officially Newsletter of The Center for Wooden Boats

2 supports development of such a park, of course, but we will continue to develop our own small-craft maritime museum as plans for the larger and more costly Historic Seaport unfold. (No sense in waiting around; these multi-million-dollar ideas take awhile to develop. There are many small-craft programs the Center can pursue without a lot of money...) THE FIRST YEAR Looking back over development of The Center for Wooden Boats, we realized that the idea has been "public" for exactly one year. Here are a few highlights of our activities during the first 12 months: * In October, 1977, we formally announced formation of the Center at FISH EXPO, held in Seattle, throwing together a booth display, brochures, posters and other materials a few days before the exposition opened. The booth featured Marty Loken and Gloria Grandaw's Poulsbo boat, Shine, which helped attract hundreds of fishermen to our display. * Then, early in 1978, we participated modestly in the Seattle Boat Show, sharing a Kingdome booth with our friends at Northwest Seaport. * In June, just in time for our second annual Seattle Wooden Boat Show, we established membership fees and other "rules and regs," allowing us to accept donations and offer tangible if upcoming benefits to members. * The Seattle Wooden Boat Show (July 1-4, 1978), organized and sponsored by The Center for Wooden Boats, was a tremendously successful event...with displays of boats and other traditional maritime goodies, rowing and sailing races, films, slide shows, demonstrations of boatbuilding skills, booths displaying tools, hardware and fastenings, chantey singers and fund-raising auctions. The Center emerged with a few thousand dollars in the bank, our first official paid members, and more 2 than a few plans for the future. * A big step was taken August 1, 1978, when members approved the Center's Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation, making possible our application for official status as a non-profit organization (first step in the search for funding). * Finally, we set our first annual business meeting for October 3 and elected officers and trustees (see item elsewhere in this issue on the October meeting). * In mid-october our application for non-profit organization status was approved by the Secretary of State's office. CENTER MEETINGS Meetings of The Center for Wooden Boats are offered on the first Tuesday of each month, 7:30 p.m., at Dick and Colleen Wagner's place 2770 Westlake Avenue North, Seattle. Please come if you can! SHAVINGS is published monthly for members of The Center for Wooden Boats, 2770 Westlake Avenue North, Seattle, WA Membership dues are $7.50 per year for individuals, and $15 per year for organizations. (See details, page 8) On the cover: We wish to thank the Apprenticeshop at the Bath Marine Museum, Bath, Maine, for use of the sketch of a Matinicus peapod...taken from their booklet, Apprenticing Revived.

3 The Center's 14-foot, peapod-style Metlakatla Boat, purchased by an anonymous member for donation to o r fleet. The boat was built in 1927 or 1928 by Davis & Son, in the Tsi ishian Indian village of Metlakatla, Alaska. (Photo by Marty Loken) CENTER DONATIONS Quite a number of items have been donated to The Center for Wooden Boats during its formative months, including: * 14'-7" Metlakatla Boat, purchased by an anonymous member for donation to the Center. The boat was built 50 years ago in the Tsimshian Indian village of Metlakatla, Alaska, by Davis & Son, who built a variety of fast and seaworthy small boats for handtrolling and pleasure use. * Lines of a Columbia River gillnetter, taken off of an abandoned hull at Astoria in Donated by Hobart Thompson, of Salem, Oregon. * Half-model of a gillnetter, based on lines mentioned above. Donated by Jean A. Deschenes III, of Grafton, Mass. * A handsome Center for Wooden Boats sign, carved in wood (of course!) and donated by Tom Parker of Seattle. * 14'-3" whitehall-style pulling boat built perhaps 40 or 50 years ago by Acme Boat Works, of Seattle. (If anyone has heard of Acme Boat Works, please let us know.) This is a pretty boat...but also mysterious... and we haven't yet researched her background. She was donated by Loren Avenell, of Redmond. * Another boat we should mention, although it doesn't belong to the Center, is the 31-foot Navy rowing gig Dick Wagner purchased last year. This boat needs a lot of work, obviously, but Center volunteers cannot continue the restoration begun last year in Port Townsend until a suitable that is, large enough shop space is made available. A 20' x 40' covered area would be ideal. Any ideas?

4 THE CENTER FOR WOODEN BOATS... A DOODLE FROM DICK WAGNER'S DINING-ROOM TABLE Z/<6 <4 Y /2oo & - -+ Dick Wagner's assignment for Volume One, Number One was simple. "Just turn on the genius and give us a Master Plan," we told Wagner. "Something that will awe and inspire, or at least make somebody mad enough to come up with their own idea of what the Center should look like..." He said he'd try...and here it is-- hot off the dining-room table! To quote a bit from Wagner's scrawled notes: "No site & no budget really leaves everything to the imagination... Entrance experience-- try to lessen the dreary impact of the parking lot, a necessary evil. Make the entrance, by land or sea, a surprise. By land, you filter through two man-made hills (executive wine cellar under one hill; executive sauna under the other). Coming to the shoreline, a choice of which way to go--to the left leads to a covered boat exhibit with graphic displays and a library upstairs...walls lined with books and filing cabinets filled with boat plans. Great hideout on a rainy day. Outside this building you can take a float out to the boathouse (rental boats, repair and storage area, with meeting room and director's office upstairs.) If you take the entry path to the right you arrive at the boatshop. Visitor's gallery and loft floor above. From the secondfloor view deck, take a bridge across to the boathouse and visitor's dock. (Bridge has 18' clearance, enough for small boats moored inside.) Also, boat ramp and parking for trailers is needed. Probably should have warehouse for general storage. Total land and water area 300' by 500'. Anyone have any better ideas?
