He ll do a presentation on Wild Plants 25 Paddle trip somewhere in Arkansas September 18 Monthly Meeting - Speaker is Jeffrey S. Girard, regional archaeologist and assistant professor at Northwestern State University. He will give a presentation on a 14th century dugout canoe that was discovered last year on the Red River. 22 Bodcau Forest & Wildlife Celebration Day October All Society Meeting at Lake Claiborne State Park. Bayou Chapter is hosting our friends from up north. Our monthly meetings are held at Mickle Hall in the Carlisle Auditorium on Centenary College campus on the first floor. X marks the spot on the map. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. (except December) Program starts at 6:30 pm. Business meeting follows. August 8 -That other Willard kid, Adam, was born on this day. August 24 - Dick & Sharon Maxwell celebrate 50 years of wedded bliss. Congratulations you two! August 27 - Linda Miller will mark the date of her birth on this day. Edith Farmer was also born on this day. However, she will start her celebration at least one hour earlier. Atlanta, Georgia is in the Eastern Time Zone. Gosh, there has to be more days that are special, so please post them so everyone can participate in your celebration. 3 BCOS Meeting Minutes July 17, 2018 By: Jenny Hackman A motion was made to accept the minutes from the June Meeting as printed in the newsletter by Roy and 2nd by Marian. All were in favor. Treasurer report: Dick reports $ after deposit was made today Newsletter Report: Marian nothing new to report Publicity: Harvey was not present Conservation Activities: Roy nothing new to report Conservation: Sandy gave a report on the Dusky Gopher Frog Old business: Outings reports: the reports are in the newsletter Several Thank You letters were received from the children who participated in the canoeing activities at the Red River Wildlife Refuge and 1 from Terri Jacobson There was a triathlon Sunday 7/15 at Cross Lake. Dick reports that he was given a 2-day notice New business: Dick brought up an issue with the kayaks and pfd regulations. He reports that pealess whistles are supposed to be attached to the pfds. Tom made a motion that BCOS purchase 12 pealess whistles. Sandy 2nd the motion. No one had any additional discussion. The motion carried. Jenny Hackman reported that ALTOS has pealess whistles and sell them for $1 each and a lanyard would be placed on the whistle. It was approved for Jenny Hackman to be the supplier. Dick brought up a discussion of a $250 donation for the Red River Cleanup which is what was donated last year. A motion was made by Anna Livengood to donate $250 to the Red River Clean-up. Tom Goleman 2nd the motion. No one had any additional discussion. The motion carried. Dick will get the donation to Adam Willard. La Wildlife Federation is having a meeting 8/18-8/19 in Lafayette. There is a hold on the poison for the feral hogs. There have been several lawsuits in Texas. Anna mentioned that the meeting announcement used to be in the newspaper with a note about the speaker. There was discussion that Harvey s contact is no longer working for the paper. Red River Clean-Up meetings are open. The next meeting is 7/26 at the Flying Heart Brewery at 6:00 pm. Adam is willing to take anyone interested on a tour to a spot off of Ford St to see all of the trash. River Cities Triathlon is on Sunday 8/5. Everyone in a canoe or kayak needs to wear a high visibility shirt. All volunteers need to have a volunteer flier to park near the marina. The plan is to meet and leave at 6:00 am from McDonalds on Airline at I-220. A group will be camping at the park for the weekend. Canoe instruction in Bossier for Boy Scout Troop the scout master is a friend of Wayne s. Roy will send an regarding what type of instructions they would like, what type and how many boats they have, the number of scouts/adults to instruct, ages, and activities. It will be set up as a group that canoes and friendly instructs others. Roy is waiting to hear back from the scout master. Roy will post the information when he receives it. At 6:45 at the Red River Wildlife Refuge the 2nd Tuesday of the month is the Fly Fishing Meeting. The meeting was adjourned to Johnny s Pizza. 3

4 River Cities Triathlon - August 5, 2018 By: Roy O Neal Yep! The core group of triathlon safety boaters, that Mike Cook, a retired triathlon competitor who now assists in producing triathlons in many places, calls the best safety boaters ever was back at it again. This was the strongest representation of BCOS that this writer can recall at this annual event. I can account for at least 29 BCOSers, and am relatively sure there were more. I was told there were 35 boats and at least 42 people involved. That is good news because when there are around 1,000 swimmers of varying ability, the more you can have looking after them, the safer, and smoother, the event will be. Who knows what prompted so many to show up for the 2018 version of the River Cities Triathlon? Maybe because this was the 38th Anniversary of the event. Shucks, there may have been a child of someone who did the first one, competing in Number 38. I am betting there were at least a couple of athletes who have done all 38. But that is another story for sure. I think that one thing causing so many BCOSers to show up with boats, paddles and PFD s, was the number of them who ceased the opportunity to have a camping and visiting weekend at Cypress Lake. They were there in everything from RVs (Kenny and Sandy Miller in their almost brand new one;, Marian, Sadie and Buddy Howard in her Mercedes powered unit) to long, medium and short, pull behind campers. Dick Maxwell, who was just recovering from an appendectomy, came out Saturday with his I built it tear-drop style camper, just to support the group. Others doing the camping thing, were Steve & Grace Eyler, Tammy & David Jernigan, David & Karen Pitts, Dee Jaye Teutsch, Barbie Halbert, and Jack Land. Gary & Jenny Hackman were also there, but I don t know if they brought their tear-drop. So, what caused these folks to attract a large number of other BCOSers to Cypress? You guessed it POTLUCK SUPPER on Saturday Night. The lure of the typical BCOS Pot Luck was strong enough to even have some come out on Saturday evening to do a little paddling and lots of eating. May as well do my best to list the others of our clan that were there. As you may see, my best will probably mean I left someone out, but know it was not intentional and you are appreciated just as much as any of those whose name I can recall. Here goes Dee Hanson, Sandy Roerig, Mona Allison, Wayne Kiefer, Dennis Watters, Larry Moore, Becky Jutze, August Myszka, Roger West, Mrs. West (sorry I can t remember your name at this moment, Owen West, Megan Schwager, some other ladies that I can t remember, and yours truly, Roy O Neal. A GIANT THANK YOU to everyone who made 2018 the biggest yet as far as safety boaters are concerned. I would be remiss if I failed to mention a young lady (Christina Gotberg) who did a fantastic job of providing assistance to the very last swimmer on the course. She, upon seeing that the lady swimmer was having a very difficult time, but obviously, like almost all of the participants, would not give up, jumped into the water and began helping. This started before the buoy marking the last turn where one headed for the finish. As most of you know, there is still a long way to go to the beach, especially if you are very tired already. There were numerous offers to both the participant, and the helper, to get in a boat, but neither would quit. The helper, when told they could ride, responded with a big smile, saying No thanks, I need a good workout anyway. and away they both swam. When told of this effort, Matt Brown said she should be recognized as the Volunteer of the Year. 4

6 Pop up Paddle at C.B. Dickson Park By: Wayne Kiefer Pop up Paddle at C.B.Dickson on July 18th went very well. We had about 30 people participate in the mid week event. Weather was hot but overcast and a nice breeze kept things bearable. Several new folks attended and showed interest in joining our group for events. Many paddlers were surprised at the size of the lake there and journeyed to the far ends on the oxbows waters. After the paddler,most people hung around and had food from the grill. Thanks to all those who brought food to share. We could have fed 30 more with the items that were contributed. You guys are such giving and sharing friends. Sorry it got dark and we had to pack up. Come join us on the next mid week paddle. Impromptu Cleanup on the Red By: Wayne Kiefer On Tuesday July 23rd, a few fellow kayakers gathered at the Red River to perform some trash cleanup. Two power boats helped to travel the banks and see the troubled areas. We went north to the sandbar across the street from Veterans Park and collected about 8 bags of assorted garbage. Cans, bottles, diapers, many cups and you name it was there. After cleaning that up, we proceeded north to the sandbar where we will gather for Friday's "Moonlight" paddle. It was very clean and not too much had to be collected. A nice surprise. Thanks to our crew of Tammie and David, Barbie and Francine for joining me in this cleanup on the Red. Job well done and very much needed!! 7 Annual Sabine River Paddle (Home of the Famous Tiger Fang Falls) By: Dee Jaye Teutsch Well let me begin with Wow, Whoa and oh my gosh what a turnout that was! We ended up with 35 boats total. 31 kayaks and 4 canoes with a total of 39 paddlers. Quite a few members made the trip including myself, Abby better known as (Double Digit), Karen & David Pitts, Wayne Kiefer, Sandra Roerig, Marian Howard, Roy O Neal, Dick Maxwell, Dennis Watters, Toni Spitale, Dee & Tim Hanson, and Laura and Neil Havard. So, I believe that being a total of 14 members and 25 guest paddlers. I am glad we had that many members come out to help with all our guest paddlers. It was quite the turnout. We started counting boats as they came into the parking lot. When we got past twenty we where thinking oh my gosh chuckling among ourselves standing there in amazement. We gathered between 8:00 & 8:30 am and departed for the river in a big caravan down I-20 to Hwy 59 south to the put in. We got some funny looks going down interstate by the other cars passing our caravan, probably wondering where in the heck are all those boats going? Boy did they miss out on the fun that day! We made it on the water by about 10:15 am after shuttling some vehicles to the takeout before hand since we had so many with us. We probably had about 25 vehicles in all. A whole lot of chatter on the bank before takeoff, quite a bit going down river about Tiger Fang Falls. We arrived at the falls and everybody got out on the shelf rock you can walk on and basically stopped. Most of the guests said OH NO not me after hearing the water fall and walking up to check it out, they were saying I am not going over that, so I sent Abby to go run the falls. I said go show them how it is done honey and of course Abby obliged. Off she went and away she dropped over off over the falls for a perfect run. The looks on other paddlers faces, and the talk started. Well if that little 12-year-old girl (Abby-Double Digit) can do it, I am going to try. So away they went one after another until it they were at the bottom on the other side of the falls. Then several ran it twice, several took a swim, and several where amazed at the fun they where having. Only a few walked their boats over the pull out. The rest of the day the river chutes and surfs stayed full along the way everybody wanting more and more fun the farther they went down river. We stopped and swam and played on several different areas of the river. The group was large, so some boats made it to the take out about 2:15. The last of the boats made it to the take out about 3:30. The gauge for this river run that morning was at 6.67 which was running a bit on the lower side. There were some places we just skimmed and scooted across the sand bar under us. Next year I think we need to reset the runnable level to closer to 7.0 if we can get it which will make the drop at the falls not such a big drop, but still a nice drop and definitely have more river flow beneath us. All in all, it was probably the best way to enjoy one of the hottest days of the year so far. Thanks to all who came and definitely thanks for helping all our guests along the way down the 7-mile river run. 7
