1 BAYOU BYLINE Bayou Chapter, Ozark Society September 2015 Our monthly meetings are held at Mickle Hall in the Carlisle Auditorium on Centenary College campus on the first floor. X marks the spot on the map. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month. (except December) Program starts at 6:30 pm. Business meeting follows. Plan to join us after the meeting for pizza and socializing. August Meeting Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 6:30 pm Carlisle Auditorium, Mickle Hall, Centenary College Speakers are Adam and Lisa Willard "6th Annual Red River Cleanup" Adam and Lisa Willard, long time BCOS members and owners of Ashley's Building & Construction, will be giving a presentation on the upcoming Red River Cleanup to be held on September 15, The cleanup headquarters will be at the Stoner Boat Launch in Shreveport from 8 AM to Noon and conclude with a lunch for the volunteers. Adam and Lisa Willard are the President and Vice President/ Treasurer, respectively of the Red River Cleanup (RRC), a 501c3 non-profit organization. Now in it's sixth year, the cleanup has continued to grow, attracting more volunteers, sponsors and well deserved recognition. This year will be bigger and better than ever. Please come and hear about what's planned for this cleanup. And plan to be energized to come out to help, or help again, be a part of a growing community-wide effort clean our river, and raise awareness for the problem of litter in this place we call home. The Loridan Twins, Michelle and Henri, both arrived on this day. Yes, Henri, we remember you are the oldest, but shorely not the prettiest. Mary Whitesnake Rambin would have been 96 on this day. We are remembering Mary! 2

Sabine River Float August 29, 2015 First of all, thanks to all of you for the kind words sent out way for the SUCCESS of the Sabine River Float.

A very articulate man Roy is; especially with words. OK. KILLER FANG FALLS was everything it was supposed to be.

Well, so be it, it was Abby s birthday and so she deserved the right to go twice, or maybe it was three. Anyway, it was a fun time watching those who ran it, run it. Even our grandkid ran the falls.

3 Sabine River Float August 29, 2015 First of all, thanks to all of you for the kind words sent out way for the SUCCESS of the Sabine River Float. We, Cathy and I, are most humbly grateful for them BUT, that aside, it really couldn t have been a successful event if all of you hadn t shown up to help it be that way. So, I will name you individually, as it were: Dick Maxwell; Roy O Neal; Dee Jaye Teutsch; (Abby and Daisy - granddaughters of Dee Jaye); Tom Goleman; Sandy Roerig; Toni Spitale; Lindsey Boyd; Nikki Norman Courtney Norman; Sonya Armstrong; John & Cathy Joyce and grandkid Kenzie Joyce. Roy O Neal had written a very nice article previous to this and I hope that it gets published in the newsletter. A very articulate man Roy is; especially with words. OK. KILLER FANG FALLS was everything it was supposed to be. Those who decided to run the famous falls were not too disappointed and in fact there were a couple of people who ran the falls twice as I recall, namely Abby and Daisy. Well, so be it, it was Abby s birthday and so she deserved the right to go twice, or maybe it was three. Anyway, it was a fun time watching those who ran it, run it. Even our grandkid ran the falls. Amazing. Time flies when you re having fun, cause Kenzie is 14 now.look out On to the surfing hole and lunch. We, most of us, had a piece of birthday cupcake to help celebrate Abby s 10 th birthday. YUM, YUM; even dunked in river water. There we were able to watch some butt bumping down the little run that was there. And, Kenzie aptly renamed it Rock Butt Rapids. Some went tandem and others singly. Nonetheless, it was a lot of fun. Had a couple of boat surfers try to surf the wave there; Nikki Norman and Kenzie were the two who were successful in doing that. All in all, we had a great time. Little Daisy fell asleep in the bottom of the boat and so when we got to the take out, we carried the boat,with her in it, up the ramp and carefully set it down so as not to disturb the child. End of story so, thanks again for all of you who came. Maybe thinking about another trip in October.maybe. JJ & CJ 3

4 Sabine River Float Here is a note from our friend and Dorcheat Bayou expert Lane Merritt. Harvey, the Bossier Parish Government has joined with the Webster Parish Government in a serious effort to permanently withdraw water from Bayou Dorcheat near Minden. Most of the withdrawn water will be pipelined out of Webster Parish into areas near East Hwy 80, the Town of Haughton, and Southeast Bossier Parish for industrial and residential use. Bossier Parish intends to own and operate the Camp Minden water system located in Webster Parish, which includes Bayou Dorcheat s surface waters. It seems crazy but during low water levels in the bayou the proposal withdraws more water from Bayou Dorcheat than the nearby USGS stream gage indicates is being discharged. There, Bayou Dorcheat is a protected public-owned Louisiana Scenic Stream and is the chief recharge source for the Sparta Aquifer in the lower areas near Minden. Senator Robert Adley from Bossier Parish and other local officials are strongly against the proposal. Saying that the waters of Bayou Dorcheat should be held for future use for Webster Parish. 5 Bayou Chapter Ozark Society Minutes - August 18, 2015 At 6:36 p.m., Vice Chair Tom Goleman introduced our speaker Terri Jacobsen from the Red River National Wildlife Refuge. Terri informed us the RRNWR website is in the process of being updated. But facebook is where all the information and promotions are done at this time. Terri then did a slide show presentation on the RRNWR. The wildlife refuge is under the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Dept., which oversees more than 500 wildlife refuges (currently around 560 in the U.S.). Louisiana has 23 wildlife refuges. The emphasis is land for wild life. A sister agency is the National Park Service. And the refuges work in co-op with the Nature Conservancy. A secondary purpose is wildlife dependent recreation: -hunting -photography -education -fishing -nature observation -interpretation Duck Stamp money helps purchase habitat - to promote the wildlife refuge program. You can purchase Duck Stamps at the post office or on-line, and maybe at Bass Pro Shops. You don t have to be a hunter to purchase a Duck Stamp! The Red River National Wildlife Refuge is 19,000 acres spread over four refuge units within the Red River Valley. The Lower Cane River Unit is 7,555 acres. The Spanish Lake Lowlands Unit is 2,793 acres. Both of these are in Natchitoches Parish. The Bayou Pierre Unit is 3,683 acres, with the Pintail Tract, which has a hiking trail. This is off Hwy 84 and I-49. The Headquarters Unit in Bossier City, with 650 acres, is an Urban Refuge Unit. The RRNWR deals with wildlife, management, and restoration. The next big event is the Wildlife Festival, October 17. Volunteers are so important in many areas, including keeping the store open. ===================== After a break, the business meeting was called to order at 7:50 by Chair Dick Maxwell. There were no guests to welcome tonight. Secretary: Marian Howard moved that the July minutes be accepted as printed in the newsletter. Gary Hackman seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer: Lisa Wilson was not present, and tried to the report to other board members, but it never came through. COMMITTEE REPORTS Publicity: The information on tonight s meeting didn t make the deadline to get into the paper. Conservation: Sandy Roerig was not present. Canoe & Kayak: Kayaks and canoes are available to members at no charge now. OLD BUSINESS Bayou Bartholomew, Chemin-a-Haut trip: water was very low, and it was very hot. T-Shirt info: Jenny Hackman has very few t-shirts left to sell. DeGray Lake Tri: Cathy Joyce reported on the 5-member participation as safety boats there. Continued on the next page... 5

6 NEW BUSINESS Minutes continued from previous page Facebook page: Dee Jaye Teutsch reported on the number of people who actually look at our facebook page: one day there were 211. If everyone likes the postings on our page, more people become aware of our group. Dee Jaye needs to get together with Kalli Bailey (our webmaster) to make sure things are updated on the webpage as they are on facebook. Red River Cleanup: The cleanup is now separate from BCOS. Dick wants to know if we (BCOS) might want to support the cleanup monetarily, to become a sponsor. Our logo would be on the t-shirts and we can set up a table with our banner to promote our club. George Gehrig talked about partnering with the Red River Cleanup in grant applications. George will give us more information about the grant process, etc., at our next meeting. All Society Meeting: Oct 3-4; Crater of Diamonds State Park in AR. Charles Kirkland said these dates are still good for him to come conduct wilderness first aid training. Bossier Farmer s Market: George Gehrig suggested we set up a table / booth at the Bossier Farmer s market. It s a free space to promote our group. It s on Saturdays from 9:00 - noon. LDWF s Catch and Cook Program Takes Your Fish From Louisiana Waters to Table in One Tasty Trip The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries now offers the Louisiana Catch and Cook Program,

The Catch and Cook Program allows fresh caught Louisiana game fish to be served in our Louisiana restaurants, what could be better than that? asked Sen. Allain.

There is no fee to apply for the permit, and participating restaurants may charge the guest any amount they choose for preparing the item.

Fish must be cleaned and processed beforehand and can only be served to the party who caught the fish.

7 LDWF s Catch and Cook Program Takes Your Fish From Louisiana Waters to Table in One Tasty Trip The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries now offers the Louisiana Catch and Cook Program, allowing anglers to enjoy their catch at a local restaurant, prepared by their favorite chef. Act 577, authored by Sen. Bret Allain of Franklin during the 2014 Legislative session, allows participating retail food establishments to prepare certain recreational game fish. Any retail food establishment that wishes to participate in the program can apply to the Department for a participation permit. The Catch and Cook Program allows fresh caught Louisiana game fish to be served in our Louisiana restaurants, what could be better than that? asked Sen. Allain. It promotes recreational and charter fishing along with some of the best restaurants in the world. This program highlights what Louisiana is famous for. There is no fee to apply for the permit, and participating restaurants may charge the guest any amount they choose for preparing the item. The guest providing the fish must execute an assumption of risk relieving the establishment of any responsibility. Fish must be cleaned and processed beforehand and can only be served to the party who caught the fish. This program is a wonderful opportunity to promote the state s nearly $2 billion recreational fishing industry while simultaneously showcasing Louisiana s topnotch dining establishments, said LDWF Secretary Robert Barham. Anglers, especially those traveling to the Sportsman s Paradise to take part in our first-class fishing, are looking to add value to their experience and the Catch and Cook Program does exactly that. Sen. Allain recently took to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico out of Barataria with fellow members of the Louisiana Legislature and outdoor media to promote the new program. Captain Theophile Bourgeois of Bourgeois Fishing Charters hosted the group. To date, 14 restaurants have signed on to the program, and LDWF expects more to join as it gains more publicity. The Louisiana Restaurant Association is currently working with the Department and Sen. Allain s office to further promote program awareness amongst the restaurant community. 7

8 The Chairman's Corner Ahh, September. It may be my imagination but, it seems as if the oppressive heat of summer in Louisiana has started to decrease. Perhaps Fall is lurking just around the corner with it s much cooler temps and the siren call of hiking trails. However, before that happens, we have a couple of water adventures to complete. Our calendar weekends are crowded for the next three weekends. After our meeting on the 15th, we have in order. 19th. Depending on water level, a float on Dorcheat Bayou.. 26th. Bodcau National Hunting and Fishing Day [ Many volunteers will be needed ] 26th. The Tour de Rivere Rouge will kick off and if you are unable to help out at Bodcau, I m sure that crowd boats would be welcome on the Red for the start of this epic paddle boat race. 27th. Safety Boats for the Meat Pie Tri. The finish of a double header weekend. Oct. 3rd & 4th. Our Chapter will host the Ozark Society fall Meeting at the Crater of Diamonds State Park. I also understand that there will be a need for safety boats for another race being held on Cross Lake in October. Cathy or John will I m sure have more information on that. ALERT ALERT ALERT There is a need for a committee to twist arms and find volunteers for the following positions. Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. Names need to be submitted at the October meeting and voted on at the November meeting. New leadership will take control on the first of the year. [ as an aside, if nominated, I will not run. If elected, I will not serve ] Volunteer I will do. Leadership is just not my thing. We also need to start thinking about a Christmas Party. Any volunteers for that task?
