4 ! ABOUT THE COMPACT From our earliest arrival, the river has been our lifeline, and it will continue to be the lifeline for future generations. Today, the basin s communities are growing at an unprecedented rate. The Nashville area alone anticipates one million additional residents over the next 20 years. As the region grows, pressing new challenges, as well as opportunities, emerge. Increased demands on our water resources, recent droughts, and severe flooding have all underscored the need for broader engagement by public and private stakeholders to protect and conserve the basin s waters. The Cumberland River Compact seeks to confront these new challenges and enhance the health and enjoyment of the Cumberland River and its tributaries through education, collaboration, and action. The Compact s goals are to: TEACH We provide people and communities with opportunities to learn more about our shared waters and how we can best manage and care for our rivers and streams. RESTORE The way we treat our land has a direct impact on our water. We work with everyone, from farmers to city dwellers, to promote sound land practices and to clean up and restore our rivers and streams. CONNECT Nothing reinforces the value of water more than being near it, playing in it, and exploring its natural beauty. Our annual dragon boat festival and various outings remind everyone that water is not only essential to a healthy environment, but can also be enjoyed by all!!4

8 FUNDRAISING Thank you for participating in the 11th Annual Cumberland River Dragon Boat Festival! The Cumberland River Compact works to enhance the water quality of the Cumberland River and its tributaries through education, collaboration, and action. Every $100 raised will help clean 20 linear feet of stream in the local watershed and help assure the Compact can continue its 18 years of advocating for a safe, clean Cumberland River. You and your team can help us reach our goal to raise $50,000 to support the work of the Cumberland River Compact! We bet you thought that the Dragon Boat Festival was all about having a fabulous time on the river with your family, friends and co-workers paddling, screaming, dancing, laughing, eating, and wearing silly clothes. It is a whole lot more than that! The Dragon Boat Festival is the MOST IMPORTANT DAY of the year for the Cumberland River Compact and it is YOUR BIG CHANCE to help us to help the river that we all hold dear. So once you have registered a team, we need YOU to turn your thoughts to fundraising for our wonderfully important cause! Because you are a good person who cares about clean and abundant fresh water. Each team is required to have 8 female paddlers. A 3 second penalty will be given for each female the team is short and fills with a male. If the team leaves the missing female spot open, the team will not receive the penalty. Wake riding, crossing lanes (if it impedes or endangers others), and general misconduct on land or in the water will also result in penalties. A team may purchase an additional practice for $200 after September 1. ADDITIONAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES While we hope to have a dragon boat club in Nashville next year, there are currently no consistent or official dragon boat practice opportunities in Nashville. However, stand up paddle boarding (SUP) and other types of paddling will help you get in shape for the race! In years past, local SUP outfitters have offered training sessions for dragon boat teams a dragon boat paddling stroke can even be taught on a stand up paddle board! If you and your team are looking for training opportunities, we suggest contacting the following paddle sport companies: Nashville Paddle Co.: Paddle Up TN: HOOK1 Kayak Fishing Gear: River Queen: Cumberland Kayak:

Sign up HERE. HISTORY OF DRAGON BOAT RACING According to legend, Dragon Boat racing originated in China more than 2,300 years ago. Chinese history describes the fourth-century B.C. as a Warring States period, a time of shifting alliances and treachery. The patriot and poet Qu Yuan championed political reform and truth as essential to a healthy state. The King, who had fallen under the influence of corrupt ministers, banished his most loyal counselor, Qu Yuan, from the kingdom. Left to wander the countryside, Qu Yuan composed some of China s greatest poetry expressing his fervent love and loyalty for his country, and his deep concern for its future. Upon learning of his kingdom s devastation at the hands of a rival kingdom in 277 B.C., Qu Yuan threw himself into the Mei Lo River. The people loved Qu Yuan. They raced out in their fishing boats to the middle of the river in a vain attempt to save him. They beat on drums and splashed their oars in the water, trying to keep the fish from his body and ward off evil spirits. To honor his soul and ensure it didn t go hungry, they scattered rice into the water. The popularity of Dragon Boat Races are primarily a form of amusement and fun, while also highlighting the history and culture of this colorful event. This activity has exploded in North America and across the world with an estimated 50 million participants in 67 countries. There are about 175,000 participants in the U.S. and 150-plus recreational dragon boat clubs that practice regularly and compete in festivals and championships. This publication can be found online in the Captain s Corner at cumberlandrivercompact.org/events/dragonboat!17
