1 The Trumpet Mountainside United Methodist Church Making God s Power Real for the East Mountains July 2014 Newsletter Issue No. 123 Having lived outside of Philadelphia for about twelve years I have had the chance to visit the place where the representatives of our nation signed their names marking the beginning of the United States of America. Independence Hall was the room where the Congress including 56 representatives from 13 colonies refined and then signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, Those final moments went as follows. The Delaware deadlock was broken, and the other delegations voted the same way, save New York, which abstained. The decision was twelve to none. The Colonies had just become the United States of America. In the silence that followed the announcement of the vote, the late afternoon sun cast its soft rays through the tall windows-on a brass candlestick standing on a green felt table-covering, a carved eagle over the door, a pair of spectacles lying on a polished desk. The magnitude of what they had done began to weigh upon them, and they realized that they and their countrymen were no longer Englishmen, but citizens of a fledgling nation, barely a few minutes old. Many stared out the window. Some wept openly. Some, like Witherspoon, bowed their heads and closed their eyes in prayer. John A Daring Declaration Hancock broke the silence: Gentlemen, the price on my head has just been doubled! A wry chuckle followed, and then Samuel Adams rose: We have this day restored the Sovereign, to whom alone people ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven and... from the rising to the setting sun, may His kingdom come. Ever wonder what happened to some of the 56 signers of this declaration? Many paid a price for signing such a document. Four died of wounds and hardships during the war. Five were captured and imprisoned. Several lost wives or children. Nine had their homes attacked and damaged. Most had a high price put on their head, but for them it was worth it. I encourage you in the midst of the celebrations and fireworks, to take some time out to pray for our nation on its 238th birthday and pray for those protecting the freedoms of this nation. Finally, let s agree with Samuel Adams in praying that our nation be, restored to the Sovereign, to whom alone all people ought to be obedient. Ainsley s brothers Wyatt and Garrett were present as well.

2 July 2014 It s Pie Time Asbury Pie Cafe s a coming for the New Mexico State Fair! Mountainside has been asked to provide 100 pies this year for the Pie Cafe at the State Fair and, because we re Mountainside, we said YES! And so now begins the work. We re in the process of ordering fruit, planning for two to three pie parties, and doing general coordination with the Asbury Pie leadership. And oh, did I mention that we ll be expected to staff at least one shift of cafe workers during the State Fair? Although it will be work, it s also a lot of fun as those who have participated in the past know for sure. More info to come but I m currently looking for a couple of folks who would be willing to coordinate the big two activities. 1. The pie parties 2. East Mountain Food Pantry During May we made up and gave out food boxes for 175 families (354 adults and 190 children). 2 families were repeats and10 families were new. During the month of June we made up and gave out 143 food boxes. There were 10 new families. page 2 Pastoral Care Ministry Mountainside has formed a team of volunteers who are helping with visits to those in the hospital, rehab and the home (shut-ins). This team also occasionally helps with some special needs as they occur. The next date will be the first Sunday in July on the 6th between services in the gym.

3 Vacation Bible School Weird Animals VBS is right around the corner! July 7th - 11th MUMC will be having an amazing time hosting Weird Animals Vacation Bible School. The kids will be going from activity to activity from 9 AM to 12 PM. We ll end every day with a very special animal time where different, weird, and awesome animals will be brought in for the kids to learn from and enjoy. Snacks, games, and learning about our God is a wonderful way to spend your week. Let Callie know, , what you are donating. Thank you so much for all the cardboard, butcher paper, paint, egg cartons, and pool noodles, they were a great help and are already being used! Youth News Youth Bowling Night All youth and adults are invited to come with us for a great night of bowling fun! We ll be meeting at Silva Lanes on Candelaria and Eubank in Albuquerque on July 31st. That Thursday evening we ll be bowling from 6 to 8 PM. Bowling shoes and lanes will be paid for the Youth but dinner will not be provided. If you want to participate please call Callie at so she can know how many to expect. Youth Pool Party! The pool party was a huge success! We had seven kids and fifteen adults that ate food, played water games, and fellowshipped. The day was clear and bright and the food was great. I want to give a huge thank you to Janet and Bob VanAllen for letting us use their home and pool for our party. They were so welcoming to everyone and that really makes a difference! I'm already getting requests for next year! page 3

4 July 2014 Family Night Clue What a neat night that was! We had such a great group that came and dressed up to play the characters and entertain the young kids and adults that came to participate. We had snacks before someone came in with a deadly wound. We all had to put down the cupcakes to solve who did it, where, and with what! It turned out to be the devious Miss Scarlett with the deadly knife in the mysterious MAC! Thank you everyone that came out to participate in our event, we all had such a blast! Family Night Family Connect will be on July 25th from 6:30 to 8 PM at MUMC. As you can see from our last event, we have a LOT of fun when we get together as families. 6 July 2014 Project Share Project Share is Sunday, July 20. The signup sheet and pans are on the table in the foyer. You can also bring toiletry items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap shampoo, conditioner, and lotion. Medium size plastic containers with lids to send leftovers after the meal, and plastic grocery bags, dog and cat food are all needed too. Please put any donation in the blue bin in the old kitchen and we will take them down on the day of our service. If you have any questions you can reach Carla Miszkiel at or at Upcoming Town Hall Meetings Working through our Healthy Church Initiative tasks our Vision Team has developed mission and vision statements for our church and we want feedback from our Mountainside family on those statements. The Town Hall meetings are set for Tuesday July 8 at 7 p.m. and Saturday July 12 at 5 p.m. Directories Now Available The Mountainside directories are now ready. They are located in the narthex on the table across from the double doors to the sanctuary.
