Thurmont, MD Frederick, MD & Volume 19 Issue 4 April 2018 Well we finally had some sunshine for our March breakfast, and 1 lonely bike in the parking lot, that s a positive start, hopefully April s breakfast will be warmer and we will have lots of bikes out there. We had 39 members and 1 guest Luray Ausherman attend breakfast. That s a really good turnout. And of course there was a lot of hugs and handshakes to go around, and lots of good conversation over breakfast. On March 3rd we took a trip to S&S Sugar Maple in Corriganville. Jeff submitted this wonderful article: The Retreads are always anxious to start a new riding season and this year is no exception. Patsy started with the idea of visiting a Maryland business man that runs a family owned business making one of the sweetest things in the state, Maple syrup. Last year s visit didn t work out because it was the wrong time of year for making syrup. So the plan was in place to visit Leo and the S&S Sugar Maple business in March. The time was right for the trees, so Saturday morning March 3 rd, five car loads of Retreads headed to Corriganville Maryland. A nice day for a drive. Off we went to just outside of Cumberland to a little country town call Corriganville. There we met up with Leo, a spry gentlemen in his eighties, who gladly gave us a tour of his families pride and joy. Leo is a great talker and he certainly kept us interested, telling and showing us everything about making maple syrup. He showed us the old fashioned way to tap trees and explained the modern method. He liked the old tap and bucket best and he still uses them today. He explained how temperature, wind and rain effect production. Then out of the field and into the cooking room. First, the reverse osmosis machine that removes over 50% of the water from the trees nectar. This speeds up the process and reduces the possibility of burning the syrup. Then the boiler where the nectar is cooked down to the final product, sweet all natural Maryland syrup. Although the boiler was manufactured, Leo had installed some of his own ideas in the system to improve productivity and reduce cost. He s a pretty smart old country boy. Now off to the packaging room where the syrup is bottled. A unique filtering device that heats the syrup and then forces it through 17 filters before hitting the bottles. Man is that stuff pure. Finally, off to the sales room, or more accurately put, the storage closet where we were able to purchase his product. If you haven t had any, you are sure missing the best syrup you will ever put in your mouth. Leo was a little disappointed we weren t on bikes, so he made us promise to stop by on our travels for a visit. Syrup is available for purchase year round. Now hungry, we headed to a local diner call Hobos for some really good grub and fellowship. I m sure you may see this place again in the Retreads future. It s pretty good. We ended the day at a little surplus store I like in La- Valle, they have anything and everything you may need. Men stuff and women stuff too. Thanks Jeff & Patsy for a wonderful day. At breakfast we took a vote on which overnight trip people would prefer and the consensus is: Johnstown, PA, and Hal & Dottie were so kind as to volunteer to organize it. More details will be coming. Thank you Paul for your donation back to the club, that will be put into the charity fund. We also had another door prizes Jeff & Patsy donated a bottle of the maple syrup, and the winner of that was Lynn S. Thanks Jeff & Patsy for the donation. Retreads Bowling Augie & Lynn had set up a bowling event on Saturday March 17th, at Turner Bowling Center in Hagerstown it was a great turnout, we had 17 Retreads and guests bowling, and we had 6 Retread spectators watching, I believe it is safe to say that fun was had by all! Thanks Augie & Lynn for setting this up, can t wait for the next one. Game Night Our first Retreads Game Night was held on March 24th, at Ron & Sharon s home. For those of you who missed it, we had 14 Retreads and our 3 grandchildren to join in for food and UNO, (our granddaughter was obviously too small for either but she watched everyone!) Everyone enjoyed some food, fellowship and then down to playing UNO. As you can see everyone was in deep thought over the game!. It was definitely an enjoyable evening. We thank all that joined us for the evening. We would like to do it again. ****** 2018 Retread Rallies Dinner Out Our dinner out this month was at Mission BBQ in Hagerstown after our bowling event. Ron went over before we had finished and asked to have tables set up together so we could all be together. There were had 22 Retreads and guests attending. The food was wonderful, and service was the great. Lots of good conversation, a very enjoyable day with the Retreads. Patsy and I would like to express our gratitude for the beautiful plaque. We were very surprised. From our hearts we want to tell all of you: It was an honor and privilege to serve as your Maryland State Reps. Thanks again Future International & other rallies being planned. Flyers will be available as we receive them. We have a list of places that you must go and take a picture with you and your bike in the photo. It will run from April thru September. You will turn in your pictures and your checklist to Lynn and Augie at the October meeting. The first to turn in your paper and photos complete will win a prize. So I went to a shrink and told him: I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there s somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy. Just put yourself in my hands for one year, said the shrink. Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears. How much do you charge? One hundred fifty dollars per visit, replied the doctor. I'll sleep on it, I said. Six months later the doctor met me on the street. Why didn't you come to see me about those fears you were having? he asked. Well, $150 a visit, three times a week for a year, is $23, A bartender cured me for $ I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought a new pickup truck. Is that so? With a bit of an attitude he said, and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you? He told me to cut the legs off the bed. Ain t nobody under there now. It s always better to get a second opinion.

If interested please contact: John & Virginia Docter Miller Station Road Cambridge Springs PA jrdocterxl@gmail.com As the weather is starting to warm up and riding season will be kicking off soon here are some tips to remember: Touring Tip: Be A Safer Night Rider Excerpts from RoadRunner Magazine Tips for avoid road hazards at night: Keep a Clear View - Sunglasses or having a tinted shield on your helmet diminishes your ability to spot road hazards. Check Headlight Adjustment - Make sure the headlight on your bike is adjusted properly before it gets dark. Add Auxiliary Lights - This provides more illumination than is provided by just a headlight and Makes it easier to be spotted by others. Use Your High Beam - Whenever there s no oncoming traffic to help you spot hazards. Don t Deer Me - If route leads through wooded or rural areas, assume deer will be present and ride accordingly. Protect Your Night Vision - When oncoming traffic approaches, focus on the white line on the shoulder until the vehicle passes. Position Your Bike Defensively - Stay back far enough to react to what the vehicle in front of your is doing.. Tips for increasing your visibility at night: Be Reflective - Add reflective material to your bike and gear. Avoid Blind Spots - Position your bike so you and your lights are clearly visible in the rear view mirrors of other vehicles. Signal Your Intent - Always use turn signals for turns and switching lanes. Be sure your blinker fluid reservoir is filled. Augment Your Brake Light - Install a device that causes your break light to pulse when brakes are applied. Do a Once-Over - Check all lights before it gets dark. Final tip: Don t drive at night unless circumstances demand it. Be careful if you do have to drive at night! Upgrade Your Headlight Bulb - If your current bulb puts out a relatively weak beam, upgrade it. Always carry an extra bulb and know how to install it.
