1 MARYLAND RETREADS Jeff & Patsy Ensminger, Reps. Ron & Sharon Richards, Assistant Reps Mary Ann Ct. 618 E Main St. Boonsboro, MD Thurmont, MD chevy39man@comcast.net sharonrichards1959@gmail.com Volume 18 Issue 1 January 2017 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Our wish to you, is to have the happiest holiday season ever. Let s recap the end of The Retreads closed out the season with our annual Christmas luncheon at Mountain Gate. We had a very nice crowd with 58 in attendance and 1 motorcycle in the parking lot. Thanks everyone who contributed to the numerous donations for our door prize table. It was nice that everyone got a present to take home. Ah, the gift giving season, it feels so good. Thanks also to Gail N. for the handmade ornaments. I don t know where she gets the ideas for these gifts, but they are the perfect addition to any Christmas tree. The meal was delicious and we all got our fill. Everyone had a few laughs, some great hugs, and fellowship. I always look forward to starting my holidays with my Retreads friends and I hope you do too. Monetary donations were made to Washington and Frederick County Hospice and Operation Second Chance. Tuesday, December 6th Sharon, Bob, and I gathered together at Costco to purchase items for the Frederick County Hospice wish list. We were pleased that our donation was able to buy numerous bulk items asked for on their wish list. We also included a new Mr. Coffee machine per a request from Kline House staff. After Costco we traveled to the Kline House to deliver our gifts. They were so appreciative of the needed items and our hearts warmed with the spirit of giving. Please let your hearts be warmed as well, because you were all a part of this gift giving. All of our charity donations are the result of proceeds from the 50/50 drawings and additional funds given by individual Retreads members. This year s donations totaled $1,465. Thanks to everyone for your generosity. It means so m u c h t o t h e s e organizations. Now lets get ready for is shaping up to be another great year for the Maryland Retreads. We have had numerous great ideas come to us and we are still looking for more. Don t hold back, let us know of any ride, destination, restaurant, ice cream joint, or anything else you think would be fun for the club. We will hold an extended meeting for those who wish to attend after the February breakfast meeting. We re calling it our Ride Committee meeting. The intent is to build our schedule of after breakfast rides for We will be deciding on rides and destinations and also be assigning potential volunteer ride leaders, who will plan and execute the assigned ride. During our planning retreat in November, it was suggested we have a non-perishable food drive for our local food banks in February. If you choose, a donation would be appreciated. Keep in mind as well, if you would be interested in becoming the next Maryland Retreads representatives, please let us know. See you New Year s Day for the January meeting.

Randy W. Joanne & Rick B. Joanne s mom passed away mid-december ********* Motorcycle Group Riding Safety Tips When riding in a group, you should always follow the same safety procedures you'd use when traveling alone. However, the close proximity of other riders does add to the risk of operating a motorcycle. To stay safe in a group riding situation, remember the following tips: Use a staggered riding formation to provide a sufficient space cushion between group members. Each rider must have enough space and time to react to any hazards that you might encounter. If you're traveling on a curvy road or visibility is poor, ride in a single-file formation. Side-by-side formations should be avoided whenever possible. If you're traveling in this manner, you may not be able to swerve if you encounter an obstacle in your path. Riders one the same track should have a distance between them of at least 2 seconds. Motorcycle operators carrying passengers should ride on the right whenever possible. Novice riders shouldn't carry passengers at all. If someone in the group is riding a motorcycle with a sidecar, have him/her ride at the rear or front of the group. As you're riding, periodically check your rearview mirror to make sure the person behind you isn't falling behind. If necessary, slow down to allow him/her to catch up. Don't allow anyone to get separated from the group. Ideally, your group should include people with similar skill levels and riding styles. But, if you are traveling with both new and experienced motorcycle operators, keep the novice riders in the middle of the group to prevent them from falling behind. ******** Cabin Fever? Join us for Dinner Out! Saturday, January 14th - 3pm - Hong Kong Restaurant, 1075 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, MD Saturday, February 11th - 3pm Double T Diner, 5617 Spectrum Dr. Frederick, MD Saturday, March 18th - 1pm Brother's Pizza, Buchanan Trail East, Waynesboro, PA ********** Recipe for a Prosperous, Peaceful Year Take twelve, fine, full-grown months, see that these are free from all old memories of bitterness, rancor, hate and jealousy; cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed as much as possible from the past. Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. This batch will keep for just one year. Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot in this way), but prepare one day at a time, as follows: Into each day put Twelve parts of faith, Eleven of patience, Ten of courage, Nine of work, Eight of hope Seven of fidelity, Six of liberality, Five of kindness, Four of rest, Three of prayer, Two of medication, And one well selected resolution. If you have no conscientious scruples, put in about a teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play, and a heaping cupful of good humor. Pour into the whole love and mix with a energy. Cook thoroughly in a fervent heat; garnish with a few smiles and a spring of joy; then serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness, and a Happy New Year is certain. ********
4 MD Retread Newsletter Page 4 ******* On behalf of Operation Second Chance, Inc. We encourage you to check our website frequently for updates and events, as we have lots of exciting things planned from fundraisers to outings with our heroes. Additionally the greatest compliment you can give us would be to share our mission with your family and friends.
