(Al McGuire Center) hile the official first day of summer doesn t come until Tuesday (the longest day of the year), nearly 300 participants got a jump start on the season by battling monsoon like conditions to tip off Marquette s Session I Day Camp. Brad Autry, the camp s Special ogistical Assistant Programmer (SAP), opened the day with an emotional testimony focusing on the weather patterns of isconsin and his native Oklahoma. Sensing he was losing the crowd, he quickly switched gears to covering the event s logistics, while at the same time attempting to develop camper unity with a recently developed camp cheer. However, it appeared to be too much, too soon, for everyone involved and the new cheer was scrapped for the 2010 version, to the delight of all. As the weather outside improved, so did the energy level of the campers in each of the facilities across campus. Teams were quickly assembled as the talent pool was evaluated and game competition began immediately in preparation for nationally recognized Championship Friday. There was some concern late morning when former Golden Eagle and current camp coach Maurice Acker couldn t be located. As it turned out, he was just standing behind a six year old in the Village and an international incident was averted. Monday s heroics were provided by T.J. CANADY, who drained a buzzer beating shot against St. John s to give Georgetown a victory. JUSTIN EAVE (Senegal) and JACK JOHNSON (Miami) claimed the first free throw titles of the week and campers of the day were: UKAS SCHENKE (), MICHAE CZARNECKI (), I NEIMON (USF) and TANNER HOPP (Dallas). Victory controversy doesn t slow olympic village celebration Milwaukee, is. (Al McGuire Center) There was plenty of drama in the Village Tuesday at Session I camp, but at the end of the day the group worked together despite its cultural differences and left with a highly contested win in the Golden Eagle Challenge. The young upstarts, who featured the top hot shot scorers (JAMISON IEAND, GRANT BETH, JUSTIN EAVE, CHARIE EVIN), jumped out to a quick 2 0 lead over a pair of veteran squads. However, it appeared the team got too big for its jerseys and the /BIG EAST/ squad (roster included Maurice Acker) was able to claim a pair of victories to apply some pressure. Fortunately for both of those teams, the quartet of current MU players (Jae Crowder, Jamail Jones, Junior Cadougan, Davante Gardner) was embarrassingly bad and didn t win a single game. It should be noted, however that the contest featured catchand shoot jumpers. A quick look at game film by the staff revealed that group made just seven total shots of that type last season. In the end, it was eavell who hit the game winner, earning not only the admiration of everyone lucky enough to witness the performance, but also forcing the remainder of camp to complete hound dogs for the shame. Each of the four divisions continued pool play, with each squad trying to position itself for Friday s winner take all tournament title. Senegal currently owns a slim one game advantage in the Division and both Kansas and UCA are also a perfect 4 0 in the s. est Virginia remains undefeated an owns sole possession of first place among the 10 squads and both Miami and Boston are in first place in the Division. JACK PIETTE (USA) claimed the free throw title in the Division, but the champion from the trio of older groups (//) was unable to be crowned due to a rare rain delay. Mother Nature delayed the group s return to the Al and the contest was postponed. Tuesday s campers of the day were: JOAQUIN PASZKIEICZ (Greece), ETHAN KEER (Florida), JACOB TURNER (Providence) and JO OJNER (Miami). Title From Campers keane, matthias claim wednesday s free throw titles Milwaukee, is. (Al McGuire Center) Former Golden Eagle Maurice Acker hit some big shots while wearing the Blue & Gold, but none of those attempts produced the dagger he drained to win the Golden Eagle Challenge (G.E.C.) for his team ednesday afternoon. Following a well documented brutal shooting effort by the current Golden Eagles on Tuesday, the recent alums were called upon to try and restore some pride to the storied program. Acker, Joe Chapman, Paige Fiedorowicz and Angel Robinson comprised the fourmember squad and quickly posted a victory in game one. Village dominance of the G.E.C., which dates back several years, finally resulted in an adjustment to the format by the International Summer Camp Committee. The fundamentally sound Olympians were forced to shoot from the wing in an effort to eliminate their expert usage of the bank shot. In possession of two wins in the first three games, the Former Golden Eagles watched helplessly as the Olympians quickly claimed a pair of victories of their own. Game six, which called for one team to make five baskets, came down to the wire and ended in dramatic fashion. ith the FGE s and Olympians knotted a four hoops each, Acker calmly knocked down the game winner and pandemonium ensued as the campers mobbed Acker in celebration. IAM KEANE (USA) and ISAAC MATTHIAS (Miami) claimed the daily free throw titles and have earned the chance to compete for the title on Championship Friday. ednesday s campers of the day were: KEEGAN DOYE (USA), BAKE SCHUTZ (Arkansas), HAY- DEN EGNER (Syracuse) and ANDRE STEINER (Dallas). Championship Friday Arrives For Session I Campers kansas, west virginia undefeated entering tourney play Milwaukee, is. (Al McGuire Center) Session I campers will want to get plenty of rest Thursday night in preparation for the emotional and physical strength needed to successfully navigate Championship Friday, when the week s lessons are put into practice. Team and individual title winners will be crowned at the conclusion of the day during the closing ceremonies, supervised by head coach Buzz illiams. Both Kansas and est Virginia finished the regular season undefeated, earning the No. 1 seed in Friday s tournaments, respectively. Senegal pulled away for the crown and Miami claimed a slim one game advantage in the final standings. Controversy once again surrounded the Golden Eagle Challenge (G.E.C.), with the Olympians in the middle of the dispute. Despite falling behind by two games, the youngsters rallied to win a pair of contests and thought they claimed the title with a third victory. However, a sinister plot was uncovered by the camp federation and shady tactics by an coach known only as Souleyman forced an overtime session. For the second straight day, former MU standout Maurice Acker netted the deciding basket, this time setting off a raucous celebration in the Division. Each division s top player is honored on a daily basis, but the hard work of the staff goes largely unnoticed. Thursday afternoon, however, a freak shot clock accident brought to light the sacrifice and dedication of those who make the week possible. Senior Camp Manager Pat Idstein, who dove in front of a falling shot clock in an effort to protect the innocent campers, suffered a mild brain trauma injury (concussion) during the dunk practice session. His character was revealed however as he quickly returned to work after receiving three Snoopy band aids and six orange slices from the athletic training staff. JUSTIN EAVE (Venezuela) claimed the free throw title for the second time this week and AEC SHARMA (UConn) was Thursday s other winner. The camper of the day honorees were DOMINIC HI (Greece), TIMMY TARANTINO (Texas), PATRICK KEOGH (Marquette) and NICCOO CICCAREI (Boston).
