3 A Word from Our Training Director It has been an honor serving as your Training Director for 2016, and it is my fervent hope that I will continue to serve the DTCDC well! I want to thank Sally Browning, Holly Taylor, Peggy Phelps, and Pam White for their work on the 2016 Training Committee. Their love of this club is evident by the commitments they have made to this club. One of the primary topics of 2016 was bringing the DTCDC into the 21 st century. It is an important balance of keeping one foot rooted in our traditions and historic values, while needing the other foot to keep us relevant and attractive to a modern audience. In addition to maintaining the integrity of our training program, we are charged with preserving and promoting the DTCDC as an innovative, creative, and responsive place to train dogs. What does this mean to you? Preserving and promoting can be interpreted very differently, depending on who you ask. This a conversation the Board and membership have spent some time talking about in 2016 and I think this topic will continue to be discussed in How we can preserve and promote dog obedience as we move our club forward into the 21 st century? As always, I would love to hear your opinion SESSION ONE CLASSES Day of Week Class Class Dates Time Sunday Advanced Open Jan. 8 - Feb p.m. Utility Jan. 8 - Feb p.m. Overflow Beginner (If needed) Jan. 8 - Feb p.m. Overflow Puppy (If needed) Jan. 8 - Feb. 12 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday Beginner Jan. 9 - Feb p.m. Puppy Jan. 9 - Feb. 13 8:15-9:15 p.m. Tuesday Conformation On-Going 6:30-7:30 p.m. Positive Reinforcement (Mini-Course) Jan Feb. 7 7:45-8:45 p.m. Wednesday Beginner Jan Feb p.m. Intermediate Jan Feb. 15 8:15-9:15 p.m. Thursday Novice/Beg. Nose Work Jan Feb. 17 8:15-9:15 p.m. REMEMBER: Beginning in 2017, the club will have six sessions of classes for six weeks. The cost for non-members will still be $90. As an Instructor, you will not be committing as much of your time to each session you volunteer to teach. This also provides more opportunities for members to teach as we ask for volunteers for the extra session. Eventbrite has streamlined the registration process and orientation will be available for new students on-line before they come to class. The easiest way to register for these classes is to start with the DTCDC website link for the class you want to register for. Remember the code for members is 2016member. Page 3

4 VIDEOS FOR CLASSES The Training Committee has started work on videos that will be available to students and instructors. Students will have access to videos to see how to do different exercises, eliminate some confusion, and be able to prepare for class. The videos can show students how to do exercises in the best way for their size dog. Videos will be phased into the classes as they are prepared. The Beginner class will be the first class to phase in videos, followed by the Puppy, Rally, Intermediate, Novice, and Open classes. We will continue to use our current manuals until all the videos have been completed. Upon completion, the current Training Manuals will be streamlined to incorporate video learning. Watch for CASTING CALLS as we will be asking our members to participate in these demonstration videos. We will need dogs of all sizes, ages and levels of training. THERAPY DOG PANEL AFTER FEBRUARY MEMBERSHIP MEETING The Training Session for February will be a panel on Therapy Dogs. Plan on staying after the meeting to listen to how you can involve your dog in this rewarding program. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT MINI COURSE REMEMBER: Positive Reinforcement class as a Mini-course will be starting on Jan. 17 (Tuesday nights from 7:45-8:45 p.m.) and taught by Paul Cantwell. Classes may be audited without dogs. Positive Reinforcement Class (Each Class size: 6-8 students) Description: Each 4-week class is to teach handlers how to properly motivate using food/toy as the reward. A low stress class with mostly positive motivation to the dogs that does not focus on any single behavior, rather helping the handler use food/toy based reward to shape behaviors, correct and refine behaviors, raise food/toy drive, and transition dogs from following lures to working for rewards. The class will be taught seminar style and cover the following topics: introduction to operant conditioning, selecting the proper reward vs distraction, transitioning off the lure, motivational food/toy games, impulse control with food/toys and when to use toys vs. food. Each student will have one on one floor time with the instructor to work at whatever level they are at. The class is appropriate for all dogs at all levels. Thank you and Happy Training!!! 6 2017 Class Schedule: The Training Committee and Board approved that beginning in 2017, the club will have six sessions of classes for six weeks. The cost for non-members will still be $90. The club will be adding a session of classes but actually teaching for four less weeks in the year. This schedule also offers the possibility of adding an additional seventh session that would result in the club teaching for only an additional two weeks as compared to the current schedule. As an Instructor you will not be committing as much of your time to each session you volunteer to teach. We will also have more opportunities for members to teach as we ask for volunteers for the extra session. The first session starts January 8 th. Please see the 2017 schedule posted in the member section online and then register for a class for you and your dog. It is also listed in our Training Directors Column on page 3. Show n Go Schedule: January 21 st February 25 th March 18 th April 15 th Local Events Calendar: Local Events Calendar is moving online in the Members Only Section - SOON! THE JANUARY GENERAL AND BOARD MEETINGS: The next General Meeting is January 3 rd. Annual Dues Annual dues are due by January 1 st. See the renewal form on page 16 of the Paw Print. 7 Sheryl Archer brags: Our journey to Utility title. We showed 6 times for our title. Haughton, La. 1 st leg. 2 nd place in utility b. Sunday we qualified in open b for 3 rd place. Tulsa Saturday utility leg # 2. 2 nd place in utility b. And 4 th place in open b. Sunday UTILITY title! And 4 th place in open b. AND UDX leg # 1. Flyer is now: U-CD High Times Texas Star UD, JH, BN Flyer. Jan Bajovoch brags: On November 11, Kelly attended his first nosework trial in Paris, TX where he tried the handler discrimination element. (He had to find my glove hidden in a line of 12 boxes.) The first trial he was a little slow and only earned 4 th place, but the second trial he found his game! He alerted on the right box in under 10 seconds for 1 st place. The next morning, we drove to Corsicana where he took the American Impermanent Test Society (ATTS) temperment test. His responses to everything they threw at him were textbook! He had a great time being out on a real ranch and passed the test like he had written it! That s my boy! (Editor comment: In the December 2016 Paw Print I accredited this to Jan Bruner. My heartfelt apologies, Jan Bajovich!) Jan Hitchborn brags: Great weekend with my Aussie girls, JBART Skye Blu Diamond and JBART Magnificent Maggie Mae December Maggie got her ASCA RN title in one weekend her first rally trial just as Skye did in September. Moved her to novice C for her last run. Maggie got her first qualifying leg for her novice C title and one qualifying leg for her X title. Skye got three qualifying legs for her C title and one qualifying X leg. And Maggie forgives me for costing her a 200 by my doing the serpentine from wrong side and it was a star sign. She got a 180 that run and judge said she had to deduct 20 for entry wrong side. Trust me I will NEVER not enter it on correct side again!! Darlene Schermerhorn brags: Sassy and I went to the ASCA Rally show in Azle Dec Sassy finished her ASCA Rally Novice B title with 199, 200,and a 180. I blew the last leg by misreading the starred sign blowing another 200. So Sunday morning she finished her Novice Rally X title with a 199. So Sunday afternoon we got our first Advanced Rally B leg with a 197 by doing a 360 turn instead of a 270 but corrected it before the next sign thus losing 3 points instead of 10. Pam Chrystal brags: Clover showed at the AKC Classic in Novice and was 12 th out of 72 dogs. She may not have placed in the top ten, but I am very proud of my young girl on how she dealt with the distractions and challenges of competing at this level of competition. She also competed with the DTCDC Team and helped them to win first place! Craig and Lana Shuman brag: Champ showed in the Conroe show on the weekend of Dec Our boy took Select on Friday the 2 nd, and Best of Breed on the 3 rd and 4 th. He is closing in on his Grand Champion Silver with 197 points. Page 7
