PRESIDENT S MESSAGE By Robin Quintana Summer is just around the corner and with the summer we once again will be heading out for adventures. Whatever you choose to do this summer I wish you the best. Success is not always measured by the end result. I hope you learn from and enjoy the journey as well. Sometimes the road travelled brings just as many lessons learned. But always remember, that you determine the outcomes by adjusting your sails and setting a course that is right for you. And as the old saying goes. do not forget to stop and smell the roses along the way!

Lynda and Charlie Holman, Terri and Chester Schurr, Sandy and Cyan Myers, Susan and Jonah Stout joined McKenzie and Parker at the Dallas Libraries for a fun time of reading. Charlie, Chester, McKenzie and Parker then headed over to the Duncanville Library to finish off a great afternoon. Therapy Dogs International Tail Waggin Tutors North Oak Cliff & Hampton-Illinois Library-Dallas Duncanville Library April 25, 2015 By Robin & Greg Quintana The kids have been outside playing and not inside reading but Jonah, Cyan, Parker, McKenzie, Charlie, & Chester were still having fun. N.P. Sims Library - Waxahachie Zula B. Wylie Library - Cedar Hill May 9, 2015 By Lynda Holman We had a nice break in the rain for our visits to the Sims Library in Waxahachie and the Wylie Library in Cedar Hill. Sandi Myers and Cyan, Terri Schurr and Chester, and Susan Stout and Jonah joined Lynda and Charlie in Waxahachie; and then Charlie and Chester made the visit to the Wylie Library in Cedar Hill. We had wonderful kiddos reading to the dogs at both libraries, where we have a number of kids who have become monthly TWT regulars. At all the libraries we have parents compliment us on the TWT program and what it has meant to their kids; and at the Waxahachie library, Lynda and Charlie had a special experience. When we were leaving the Sims Library, one of the moms stopped Charlie and I and said she wanted to let me know what had recently happened with her daughter (one of our regulars). She said before she started bringing her daughter to read to the dogs, she would not read out loud to anyone even family. After she started reading to the dogs, she began reading out loud at home; and recently, for the first time, ever she read a two-page report in front of her school class and nailed every word! The teacher was amazed and asked the mom what had happened to make her daughter so confident, and she told the teacher it was all due to reading to the TWT dogs at the Waxahachie Library! I was covered in goosebumps, with tears in my eyes what a great testament to the TWT program and our wonderful pups!

12 Paw Print June 2014 Page 12 PAW PRINT FAMILY JUNE 2015 CATHY NELSON I have loved dogs ever since my family adopted one growing up. I quickly found out that dogs could be great friends. My dog would lick my tears every time I cried. The only problem was he was completely untrained. When my brother in law first met my family dog he said he had never know a stupider dog. In hind site my dog wasn't stupid, we were just clueless as to how to train him. Fast forward to we moved to Dallas and adopted Lina. She was already 2 years old and free to a good home. She's smart, but came from a home that had no rules. They gave her away because they agreed that they didn't have time for her and she needed a family that she could bond with. I was able to teach her some things, but nothing compared to what I could have done with her. Ignorance is not bliss. The latest canine addition to our family, Curdie, came into our lives because my daughter rescued him as a puppy. When the vet said he was going to grow to around 70 pounds I knew we needed help. That's when I came to DTCDC because I knew that an untrained dog is no fun. Curdie and Lina have learned so much and it is exciting to think of all that they are going to be able to do. We still need to work with them. No awards to brag about, but we have begun to take them places (thanks to Tom's advice). We have had a busy spring with soccer for my 2 youngest and the dogs are getting use to coming with us while we watch the games and practices. I have had countless people come up to us asking about our well behaved dogs. This makes me smile each time it happens because I never knew that one of my dogs would ever be called well behaved! Each time I am asked about our wonderful dogs I pass out flyers telling them about DTCDC.

13 Paw Print June 2014 Page 13 Another Installment of Sandi s Dog Show Travels A few months back I was asked if I would go to Purina Farms to judge puppy sweepstakes for the St. Louis Dachshund Club 100th Specialty show on Friday, Feb. 27th. I never once thought about ICE or SNOW when I said yes. But I felt the need to give back to the sport. I knew that my expenses would not even be covered. But I did end up with 10 entries which is better than the first sweeps I did 9 years ago with 3 entries. And maybe I should stop agreeing to judge sweeps. The first time I agreed - Hurricane Katrina hit the area where I was to judge, so I didn't get to actually judge until the following year. But (and for those who follow me on Facebook, please forgive the double post.) But...this time was Winter Storm Sparta (who names these things?) I am so happy I made it home. I left on a Thursday after the first winter mix we had earlier that week. I drove from Waxahachie to St. Clair, MO. Took way longer than I had anticipated. But the weather started to turn on Friday. I judged in the morning, then stupidly (again) agreed to steward the first of the back-to-back shows. I told them I had to leave. I made it down to Springfield, MO by nightfall on Friday. I woke up Saturday morning and could see traffic southbound on I-44 was at a dead stop. So I ate breakfast and watched for traffic to move to decide whether I wanted to attempt to drive further south. Here is the rest of the story - it is a long tale. There were only two occasions when I had a complete meltdown. After talking to Cyndy Senff (a fellow dachshund exhibitor & judge) on the phone as she drove by the exit where my hotel was in Springfield, MO, she said two things that made me want to get out - I'm not having to use my windshield wipers and the traffic is moving slow but at a steady pace. I had seen 3 snow plows go by on the bypass which is where my hotel was and much of the traffic had exited at this exit when the traffic was stopped early that morning. I told the hotel clerk that if I couldn't get out of the parking lot I would be back. I also had the forethought to clear all of the snow from my car before starting. I also made the wise decision to fill up with gas next door at the convenience store before getting on I-44. My first heart attack was getting up to the ramp to 44 and it was completely covered - ack NOT PLOWED. How could this be? But it was all powder, the snow on the roadway was powder too and made this mesmerizing swirling patterns for miles. I first followed one trucker that was going rather slow at 40 MPH. After I got my "sea" legs, I decided he was going a little too slow and it was safe to go follow a different truck that was going just a little faster. My initial plan was to just go to Joplin, MO to the next LQ. But the roads weren't bad. If you wanted to exit that was another story as the ramps were not plowed. I was thankful for having filled up. As I made my way through MO & OK, I saw sanding/plow trucks working on the highway. Weird they plow the shoulder, but no ramps. They have this weird rear tow plow that freaks you out because it looks like it is fishtailing as it goes from the road to the shoulder. You could see the changing road conditions the further south I went, but I stayed relaxed and followed a big target (not too close mind you.) When I got to Joplin, I decided to just go to Muskogee, OK. Got off at Big Cabin and talked to the guy in the toll booth. He said just take it slow there are some slick spots but that if I go slow it should be fine. Now I was mostly alone on the road - good no more speeding passer-bys. Just north of Wagoner the conditions changed again, ice began forming on the windshield even though I was trying to keep the defroster on as high as I could stand it without giving myself a heat stroke inside the car. However, it was sticking to the old summer dried out wipers too. I stopped for coffee and had the wise idea to grab a sandwich. I knocked the ice off of the wipers, but did not have the good sense to scrape the whole windshield (not sure if there was any ice build up then or not). But not 30 miles down the road I was needing to find a place to pull over to get the ice building up on the wipers off. But I kept pressing on, not seeing any ramps plowed (or heavy ruts from traffic use). So the wipers were making ice clump to the edges of the windshield. Somewhere south of Eufalla (sp?), OK decided not to plow the left lane for about 10 miles. And I was going slower in the right lane at 60 MPH when a convoy of 1 work truck and Wheelers came up behind me. They decided to pass me in the unplowed lane and that is when all hell broke loose for me. I was not going THAT slow, but conditions warranted not going 70 either. They were going fast. The work truck passed and as his rear wheels were equal with the front of my car this blast of slush and ice came across the entire front of my windshield & car (I could see NOTHING) and my wipers were on full blast now. It was like my car was hit with a ton of bricks. I'm sure I said a few curse words at this point. Seconds later I could see the first of the big rigs was now going to pass. Holy cow, what was that going to be like when he threw all that slush? Four times I had to encounter these big rigs - like a ton of slush being thrown on my car because they couldn't just follow me for a few miles to get to the plowed area again. The things that spewed from my mouth were not pretty at this point, they were just being rude and putting me in danger.

14 Paw Print June 2014 Page 14 Somehow my wipers limped into McAlester, OK after that. I cleaned about an inch of the ice off of the wipers and windshield. ALL OF IT. Every speck. I got gas and started to leave and the driver's side wiper would not make contact with the glass - I was hosed. I saw an EMS across the highway and called Ken. Between the EMS guys and Ken, I found an auto parts store back at the big exit that goes into town (who knew that's where that went, we never go that way). The guy at the Auto zone comes out to change my wipers and says "this wiper is completely broken, I'm surprised it didn't just fly off". I said "I guess someone was looking out for me, because you won't believe what I just experienced." I then decided since it was still daylight to try to make it to Durant to the LQ there. The roads had been plowed again and the new wipers were working very well. Once I got to Durant, I decided that maybe I could just make it all the way home. The new plan was to stop in Sherman and get Starbucks (ah, I had been looking forward to Starbucks the whole trip and never could find one on the highway - easy in and out.) But I knew the Sherman one was right at an exit. That was the goal. I reached the Texas rest area just as it was getting really dark. A car had just spun out on the bridge at that exit. Everyone sensible was going slow - about Others were still trying to speed along in the left lane doing 70. You could tell things were slick. Foot off the pedal on the bridges, other people were hitting their brakes, so I would slow not to end up behind them having to do the same. The other weird thing was it was slick under the bridges/overpasses. I saw a bunch of cars on the northbound side spun out too. I made it to Sherman and I was toast. I was never so thankful for good coffee and the LQ was right next door. It was MY SIGN to stop. And after driving through the construction in McKinney, the Plano & Dallas Hwy 75 corridor in the rain - I was also glad I didn't try to do that last night. Some very tight tolerances in that construction area. I saw several bumpers on the side of the road, and a couple of places you could see people had hit Hwy signs, or spun out. Yet, people were still flying by me this morning at excess speeds. I guess this turtle won the race, as I'm the one that got home safely. And the wipers work great with NO ICE. I'll be staying home awhile now. The icing on the cake was that when I got off the highway for home, Queen's We Are The Champions was playing...yes, I felt like a champion for making it home. Hope you enjoyed another installment in the dachshund travels of Sandi. Sandi Myers (EDITORS NOTE: Apology to Sandi this article was submitted back on March 1 st, yet was somehow lost in my )
