4 Sunday Night Dance Class by Dance Class Chair Chuck DiSessa Dance classes resume through the blue-moon month of June. It s exciting to see attendance continuing to grow in our dance classes with more and more support material becoming available to anyone who provides us with their e- mail during the class sessions. Paul McKenzie puts together a brief teaching video with pointers from the instructor after every class. You ll receive it online during the week with an easy printout of all the steps available with the push of a (print) button. Ideally, this will help our class members remember the sequence of the choreography so that more time may be spent on mastering the proper technique. Not only will you be able to review each step, one-by-one, but you will also see it performed by the instructor on the video. Folks, this is modern technology facilitating the learning process and accelerating your growth in ballroom dancing. Our intent is to continue to send out, via , updated class videos including key pointers and step-lists to all our students each week throughout the year. All this will be included when you attend our classes, and your much needed support will be deeply appreciated. All of Carrie s routines, which have a nice flow to them, can easily be danced at any of our social functions. The American Rhumba at 5:00 pm has a double handhold from the lady s wrap-in which looks very attractive while it rotates. Similarly, the side-by-side rotations which come later in the routine are embellished with swivels and walk-around turns before they continue rotating. All of this is well planned choreography which you ll enjoy practicing and dancing to music. The Quickstep class at 6:00 pm has a good balance of men and women. I like the unique and easy way Carrie has us come out of the long side with a Natural Pivot into a Forward Lock. The combination of following a Chasse Reverse with a Progressive Chasse is also creative and enjoyable to dance. Plan to attend class soon and share in the fun of growing with a dancing family. Making news, former class members Sandy Long and Jack Staudte represented our chapter well at Mary Murphy s recent Anniversary Showcase. They were honored for being among the six best routines that were chosen during the day by Mary and guest judge Louis Van Amstel to showcase their dance in the evening program.. Dancing with his instructor, Irina Chalkevich, Jack performed the best showcase routine of his dancing career. His International Foxtrot, choreographed by Scott Dodson, looked impressive, and was executed flawlessly. Sandy Long, dancing a Quickstep with her instructor Jason Rivers, was the surprise of the entire showcase. Looking dazzling in a red sequin pantsuit, she was chosen as the top solo routine of the entire showcase. Ending her routine in a split position, Sandy could easily be a poster girl for healthy seniors. Also noteworthy in the afternoon showcase was our very own VP Caron Schattel. Dancing with her instructor, Steve Showers, Caron danced beautifully and effortlessly, adorned in a lovely blue gown worthy of a queen s coronation. Congratulations to all who performed,-you make us all proud!! At the May business meeting, the membership voted to reduce the price of each dance class to $5.00 for SDSD members. This will take effect starting June 3rd and will continue only through the 2012 calendar year. Our club is offering this price break as an incentive to get our members more involved with our dance classes. The price is right, so please take advantage of it. Looking ahead, we have an exciting summer planned for our dance classes. Irina Chalkevich will grace our premises with outstanding choreography for our July- August classes. She will be teaching the American Foxtrot at 5:00 p.m., and the International Tango at 6:00 p.m. Circle your calendars for Sunday, July 1st, and plan to arrive early as a large class is expected. Our club is in a transition stage, where we are always looking for ways to contribute to your continued interest and growth in ballroom dancing. Our heartfelt thanks go out to all of you who continue to support our ongoing efforts. p a g e 4 of 8 pages
5 Queen s Message by SDSD Queen Shirley McCloskey Hello San Diego Smooth Dancers. I have just returned from a wonderful journey to the San Joaquin Valley for the Coronation of Queen Barbara Uichanco, Visalia Smooth Dancers. The evening presented special and exciting moments which I want to share with you. Greg Uichanco and Queen Barbara are newlyweds. The theme of her Coronation was Fall in Love with Dance which was decorated with lavender and purple hearts and flowers throughout the ballroom. Their Queen s Waltz was a medley which included a little West Coast and at one point, Greg lifted Queen Barbara into a multiple spin clockwise, paused and then continued the spin counterclockwise! It was really exciting to watch. As a dancer, one could almost feel the momentum of the spin as it continued (longer than most), then when it reversed, the audience went wild. Way to go Greg! The Honor Dance was presented by Vince & Nellie Uichanco, Queen Barbara s Father and Mother-in-law. This in itself was touching and beautiful, but wait, midway through the dance, Greg and Barbara joined Vince & Nellie on the dance floor and proceeded to dance in unison, a two couple formation team. Many of us shed a tear inspired by the love and sentiment of their dance. The Professional show was presented by David and Natalie Schulz and was outstanding powerful and expressive. David expressed his admiration for our club and our enthusiasm for dance, saying that in his travels, he has not encountered another organization with the elements of dance appreciation and friendship demonstrated by Smooth Dancers. He even wanted a group photo of himself and Natalie in front of the entire group attending the Coronation! Sunday morning Brunch honored Past Queen Dorothy Sims who has represented Visalia this past year with grace and elegance. You should have seen her Queen s Scrapbook! I was looking through it, amazed by the artistry and creativity, and thinking I might not ever display my own because it pales in comparison. Then, one of the past Visalia Queens came to my rescue and shared that Queen Dorothy had help from a professional in scrapbooking. She definitely has an outstanding keepsake of her Reign. Have you heard of the Exeter Murals? I had not until receiving a note from Past State Queen Lotti Carr with information for touring the area. There are 29 Murals painted on the outside of buildings in downtown Exeter providing an outdoor art gallery reflecting Exeter s history and culture. They are fascinating and take you back in time through the cattle drives and fruit packing days of Exeter. And there is more to it than that! The artists painted hidden objects into each mural. I went on the walking tour of the murals with Mark and Queen Kay Boyer of Bakersfield. We carried a guide of the Murals which told us either what was hidden or how many hidden objects were in the murals. We started out, among the three of us, finding everything but eventually could hardly find any of them. I am thinking the 90+ temperature may have had something to do with our lack of success. At some time, I plan to return and try again. My next journey will be to Fresno Coronation of Queen Elect Lynn Sanders on June 2nd. I will miss greeting and dancing with you at our June Social. A fun event is planned. I hope you are able to attend. 6 What Are You Doing Labor Day Weekend? " Join your fellow Smoothies from across the State at the Annual NSD Convention. This year, San Fernando Valley hosts the event at the JW Marriott Resort in Palm Desert on Friday August 31st through Monday September 3rd. The theme is Dancing Through the Holidays and the weekend will take us through a Salsa Caliente street party, a Luck O the Irish dance, a New Year s Eve celebration, a 4th of July beach party, a St. Valentine s day Soiree, and a Labor Day brunch -- all in one weekend! The JW Marriott is a 5-star hotel and the weekend price (if you register by June 17th) is only $ for the convention package and $119 a night for the hotel (price includes self parking). " This year, the traditional Friday night Team Match competition will be replaced with a Jack & Jill competition, and there will be several other Jack & Jill competitions sprinkled throughout the weekend. Club members can compete or perform in multiple dance styles from a beginner s Waltz all the way up to 3 and 4 star rhythm, latin, smooth and standard events (providing enough competitors register for that style). Also new this year -- non-members are welcome to attend (but not compete) and 20 male dance hosts will be on hand to dance with all the ladies. " So why stay home and swelter in the heat when you can relax and dance at a 5-star hotel? Be cool and register now to join the fun! Get more details at p a g e 6 of 8 pages
