4 My Money Go? Office Fees: If you ve ever wondered how your money is spent when it comes to shows, read on. Money isn t what it used to be. There doesn t seem to be much of it around and with the price of hay, feed, and other horse essentials going up there seems to be even less. When we spend that extra $15, $20, or $25 for an office fee at a show we want to know how our money is being spent. Here is a brief overview of where our dollars for that part particular fee goes All shows, whether a Recognized Show or a Schooling Show, are truly a labor of love. We owe so much to our volunteers who make the shows happen. However, SLADS does have to cover the following expenses with Office Fees. 1. A Recognized Show: a. Salaries. Judges, Show Managers, and Show Secretaries are paid personnel. As professionals their knowledge and expertise are critical to the success of the show. Payment includes fee, travel, lodging, food, everything you expect when you travel for business. All other positions required by USEF and USDF for specific level show also receive a stipend. Not a lot of money. Just enough to say thank you for working 12 hour days. b. USEF/USDF Fees. We do pay extra for Qualifying and for Drug Fees but there is a charge for every single ride ridden before a judge. c. Miscellaneous Expenses. All tests and bridle tags must be purchased. Ribbons and first place awards are also an expense. Computers, office machines, printing, mailing and all the other expenses of an office are also there. Even the clocks that are hung by the rings. 2. A Schooling Show: a. Our Schooling Shows are almost exclusively volunteer run. With the exception of the judge, no one working a Schooling Show is compensated. b. There is a cost for tests, ribbons, and award along with the miscellaneous expenses of running a show office if even on a reduced scale. While no one particularly likes to pay the Office Fee, it is essential to providing you a show venue. good to knowwhere Does 4 Hoofprints March 2013
5 Balance & Collect, One Move at a Time By Christina Mudd If you can remember last month, one of the key six principles of pilates is center. This month, weare going to find, and hopefully activate, the pelvic floor and abdominal muscles. Begin by sitting up with bent knees, feet flat on the floor about hip width apart and your hands behind your legs. The wider the legs are apart, the more gentle it will be on your back, and the closer the feet are together, the more challenging it will be. Relax the head, neck and shoulders and sit up tall, right on top of the sits bones. On the exhale, press into the big toe knuckle joint, drawing up through the inner thighs to tilt the pelvis towards you curling back onto the mat. Go back as far as you can keeping the feet completely flat on the mat. Inhale. On the exhale, begin to curl back up to sitting, bone by bone, drawing the pubic bone up for as long as possible until you must come up and then begin, once again, by sitting on top of the sits bones. Notice if the knees travel over your ankles and if your glutes do the work of your abdominals. By keeping weight into the big toe joint, it will ensure the inner thighs stay on and active. When you do the pelvic posterior tilt, make sure your low abdominals (pelvic floor) are pulling up and in, in opposition to your feet-scooping the pelvis up rather than tucking and lifting from the back side of the body. Do not forget to relax the shoulders and try to keep the length between the ribs and the hips the same as you curl back in space as when you started up on top of the sits bones. The idea is to stretch your hips away from your ribs in the low back, pull the pubic bone up with the pelvic floor, rolling the pelvis onto the leg bones while maintaining the stability through the inner thighs. Try to do 2 sets of 6 reps. Most equestrians have extremely strong extremities- arms for pulling, lifting and tacking and legs for kicking, mounting, and posting. What they are often lacking is strength in the core. Riding requires that the low back is able to follow the movement of the horse s back. To do this, the pelvis must be able to shift from neutral to a very small posterior pelvic tilt (as with the curl back mentioned above). As the pelvis swings from neutral to posterior, the abdominals must be strong enough to support the back and maintain the rider s upright stature. Riders talk about the swing and looseness of the horse s back, this is directly affected by the rider s core strength and pelvic positioning. I teach the curl back without the engagement of the glutes because the glutes tend to pop the rider out of the saddle, thus reducing the contact between horse and rider. It is simply pulling the pubic bone up and in with the pelvic floor. One of the better cues I have heard was to ride the horse between your belly and your back. 6 ANNOUNCEMENTS US Dressage Finals Entry and Invitation Qualifications Announced The 2013 US Dressage Finals presented by Adequan, will be held on November 7-10, 2013 at the Kentucky Horse Park. It will be the first head-to-head competition in Dressage showcasing Adult Amateur and Open riders at Training through GP levels, who are US citizens. The event will include an Open Division at Training through Grand Prix levels and all Freestyles, as well as an Adult Amateur Division with Training through Grand Prix. Horse/rider combinations who qualify through the nine GAIG/USDF Regional Championships, will have the opportunity to compete on the national stage. Champions and Reserve Champions who have achieved a minimum score, and filed a Declaration of Intent will be eligible to compete. Wild Card invitations are also available to high-scoring competitors in the Regional Championships who are not otherwise eligible. Invitations: Champion and Reserve Champion horse/ rider combinations for each level and eligible division, who are US citizens, will be invited from each of the nine (9) GAIG/ USDF Regional Championships. Each horse/ rider combination entering each Regional Championships class which would qualify for the National Championships for that year will be required to file a Declaration of Intent for the Championships, specifically committing Yes or No to participate in the National Championships. The Declaration of Intent form must be filed on the Declaration page of the US Dressage Finals website by the Closing Date for the Regional Championships entered. In order to be named Champion and Reserve Champion in a Regional Championship class, a horse/rider combination must have achieved a score of 55% or higher. Champions and Reserve Champions in eligible classes will be automatically invited, as long as a declaration of intent has been filed. In the event that the Champion and/or Reserve Champion declines the invitation, or are ineligible to compete in the US Dressage Finals, an invitation will be extended to the horse/rider combination that has the next highest placing in the class, providing they have (1) achieved the pre-requisite score of 55% or higher, (2) declared Yes on the Declaration of Intent for that particular level and division, and (3) are US citizens. If that combination declines the invitation, the same process for issuing invitations will be followed down through the fifth placing horse/rider combination that have declared Yes in that Finals level and division. No invitations will be issued beyond the fifth placing declared horse/rider combination except as may be eligible through the Wild Card invitations described below. Wild Cards: Horse/rider combinations who are US citizens and who are not otherwise qualified to compete in the US Dressage Finals may be invited to participate in a particular Finals class by earning a Wild Card. For all levels and divisions from Training thru Grand Prix, except freestyles, a horse/rider combination that competes in a Regional Championship class and achieves a score at or above the score listed below for that level and division may compete in the same level and division at the US Dressage Finals. In order to earn a Wild Card to compete in a freestyle championship class, a horse/rider combination must earn at least 5% above the minimum USDF Regional Championships Qualifying Score for that particular level. Horse/rider combinations are not required to have filed a Declaration of Intent in order to receive a Wild Card invitation.
