2 SLADS Membership Meeting Wednesday July 10, 2013 Meeting called to order at 6:45 pm Attendees Emily Layeski, Kathy Yamaguchi, Dawn white, Leslie Burkett, Dianne Upchurch and Ann Gioia Notes Special Election ballot will be ed to members to elect a treasurer to fi ll the remaining term. President and Treasurer will be open for election during the Annual Banquet and General Election in January. This election will not count as part of the 2-year term. Ann reported that she renewed our Fox Village license. Discussion regarding a transition plan for treasurer responsibility. Pat McNamara requested SLADS consider adding another recognized show in March to give members another opportunity to achieve scores for championships or other awards. She suggested use of the 2 indoor rings and only 2 judges. That would limit entries to 36 rides per ring per day and suffi ciently cover our 100 stall minimum requirement with the NEC. Ann will contact the NEC regarding date availability and USDF/USEF to see what would be required to add a show for The recognized show committee will meet Monday, July 15. Leslie Burkett reported for the education committee that the schooling show judges are Alice Kuhn, July; Joyce Hardsty in August and she has agreed to stay Sunday for a Fix-A-Test. Claudine Misner will do the same in September. A request to support a Region 4 young rider team member, Krista Spencer, was discussed both via and at the meeting. It was agreed that SLADS would provide monetary support and request Krista speak at the annual banquet about her experience at nationals. Results of the SLADS Summer Festival survey were discussed. Ann will work with the NEC to address issues at the facility. The prize list is still under review with the USEF so changes will be made to remove the additional $10 fee for mail-in entries and clarify the additional fees for online entry. Dawn will contact Libby Abbott to see what service she will use for October and the online fees associated. A request to change the meeting time to 7:00 was discussed as well as how to get more member participation. It was agreed that Dianne Upchurch would investigate restaurant locations in Chesterfi eld Valley that would have a room or quiet area for people to hold the meetings which would remain at 6:30 p.m. Meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Dawn White for Sarah Szachnieski 2 Hoofprints July 2013

This scholarship has enabled me to participate in additional dressage lessons that otherwise would not have been fi nancially possible. Since gaining the scholarship, I have been able to take more lessons with my local trainer (Brianna Zwilling), and participate in a few clinics with Angela Jackson and Alison Larson. All three instructors have helped me with various elements of 3rd Level, and each instructor has taught me something different. From each lesson that I took, I felt that I was getting parts of a whole and then as the 3rd Level elements got easier, my horse and I began to piece them together until they became habit. As a result, I feel like my dressage education is becoming more well-rounded, and I look forward to my fi rst show of the season. I think the most exciting moment for me (so far!) was when my horse and I rode in the double bridle for the fi rst time (I felt like a little kid being trusted to chew gum for the fi rst time. I m a big kid now!). My goal this year is to earn my bronze medal and hopefully qualify for Regional Championships in the fall. I have been able to learn so much in such a short amount of time, and I am so incredibly thankful to SLADS for providing me with such a wonderful opportunity! 3 Hoofprints July 2013

7 Dressage Show Etiquette, Part 3 GOOD TO KNOW Tips From Dawn White For those new to showing, dressage shows can be quite intimidating. This month is the second of four articles that give some insight and help on what to do when participating in a dressage show. For the entire list, go to IF YOU NEED TO SCRATCH OR WITHDRAW Advise the show offi ce as soon as possible if you are withdrawing from a test. If there is a ring steward at the warm-up ring, they can relay the information to the show offi ce. If you are withdrawing from the competition, you must obtain permission from the show offi ce before you leave the show grounds. IN THE SHOW RING Be familiar with the USDF Dressage Rules. Know your test even if you have a reader. Instruct your reader to read each movement only once and not to speak to you under any other circumstance; it could result in your elimination. If there is reason to doubt that the rider heard the call, the reader may read a movement twice. Do not engage in conversation with the judge while circling the ring prior to performance. Do not discuss the test with the judge at the ring, either before the bell or after the fi nal salute unless the judge approaches you fi rst. After the signal from the judge (whistle, bell, horn) you must enter at A within the required time period or you will be eliminated. Be sure you know whether your judge has a bell, whistle or horn. If you go off course, get direction from the judge, not your reader. In times of distress, the rider must ask and receive permission from the judge before leaving the ring or dismounting. After the fi nal salute, it is not necessary to ride to C before leaving the ring. You may ride one horse s length forward, turn either direction and leave the ring in the manner specifi ed in your test. Do not speak to the reader or your friends until you have exited the ring. If there is a scratch of another horse, you do not have to ride ahead of your time. If you choose to ride ahead of your time, your arrival at the ring informs the judge that you are ready to begin. Do not expect additional warm-up time around the perimeter of the ring. If you are scheduled to ride immediately following a break, you must wait until the judge is in place before you enter the show ring area. Dressage competitions are scheduled to the minute and usually run on time. Check for the offi cial show time at the show offi ce and adjust your watch if necessary. It is your responsibility to present yourself at the in-gate on time. Arriving late for your scheduled ride will result in elimination. On occasion the competition may get behind schedule. While it can get behind, it can also get back on schedule surprisingly quickly. Be particularly observant when a competition gets off schedule. Know when you ride in your class, keep track of scratches and plan your warm-up accordingly. 7 Hoofprints July 2013
8 The Thoughtful Rider By Hector Carmona Positive Training: Creating the spark and enthusiasm from within your horse. Many times in retraining a horse ultimately it is the ingredient of enthusiasm that is missing and the only way to attain it is with forward riding. Get away from the exercises you are performing and get back to them once you have attained the spark. Then the exercises will have the true purpose of development. During the stage of forward riding reduce the length of the ride to roughly the minutes with the goal being a little cluck cluck from the voice and to have all the eagerness that is available. In order to do this fi rst we must get the balance so he is not on the forehand. It is not hard to do. The neck needs to be with the poll as the highest point. You need to feel his center of gravity become located more under you and more to the quarters. For this to be successful both the rider and the horse must be awake. Horses will respond; they are good souls. This attitude should be there from the onset; otherwise we only warm-up ineffi ciently without preparing the horse for the possibilities. And so between you and your horse it is building the fi re. Energy: without it what is there? The goal needs to be fi nding where the edge is and going beyond it. Once you know where the edge is then all you need to do is back off a little bit. The horse s mind will guide you. All this needs to be done in short bursts and not sustained ones. Think and act as if you are training him for the thoroughbred races and put dressage on the backburner. Excitement from you and him is the task at hand. Work minutes with the breaks included with no segment lasting more than 5 minutes more or less. Praise him plenty as he begins to awaken up and takes the bit from his quarters. This is done with light seat positioning from the rider and positively no sitting trot. But remember this will not work if he is on the forehand so you must change his center of gravity fi rst before going only more forward. When the spark and enthusiasm is within the horse and you can feel it even before mounting then it s time for the next phase of education in positive training. Your horse will be grateful and happy for the joy you are presenting him. Without joy there is no real dressage and there never will be true beauty. 8 Hoofprints July 2013

10 SLADS Pilates Class by SLADS member Colleen Rull An exercise in harmony. The USEF defi nition of dressage: The object of Dressage is the harmonious development of the physique and ability of the horse. As a result it makes the horse calm, supple, loose and fl exible but also confi dent, attentive and keen thus achieving perfect understanding with his rider ( rulebook/2012/08-dr.pdf). We are asking our horses to be supple, loose, and fl exible. To become harmonious and achieve this perfect understanding, shouldn t we expect ourselves to become athletes too? Pilates exercises address issues we have as riders such as strengthening our core, learning to regulate our breathing, and increasing fl exibility where we need it to ride. Saturday s Pilates class for SLADS members was eye opening. I quickly learned where my strengths and weaknesses are, as well as my fl exibility and awareness of my body. Pilates instructor, Christina Mudd told participants they could be sore up to three days after the class. I defi nitely feel it in my core, hips, and abs today! I am pleasantly sore in areas that I m not normally sore. Hip sockets and outer thighs. Yea! said SLADS member Kim McIntosh the morning after Pilates. So, what did we work on? Exercises included: the bridge, swan, clam, roll down, roll back with twist, and lots of stretching. Are you thinking to yourself, What are you talking about? I ve never done pilates and have no idea what you are writing about. Don t worry. I felt the same way going into it too. But, Christina does an excellent job of explaining, demonstrating, and watching your technique. In addition, she ed detailed descriptions and pictures of all the exercises to participants to practice until the next class. As an equestrian, Christina was able to relate to the areas of importance to dressage riders. Pilates doesn t have an age limit and I highly recommend this educational event that is FREE and open to all SLADS members and give it two thumbs up! 10 Hoofprints July 2013
