June 2017 Brian Head Town News Volume 25 The Mayor Position and Two Council Seats Open for Election The Mayor position and two Brian Head Town Council seats are open for election this year. The dates for filing for candidacy are Thursday, June 1 through Wednesday, June 7, The Mayor and Council terms are for four (4) years (from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2021). If you decide after the filing deadline to run for one of the open positions, you can file any time between June 8 and September 4, as a write-in candidate; however, if you run as a write-in candidate your name will not appear on the ballot. Like us on Facebook at facebook.com/brianheadtown.utah 2017 Arbor Day and Annual Town Clean-up This year, Brian Head Town s annual clean-up day, community barbecue, and Arbor Day are scheduled for Thursday, June 8, WOW" Finishes its Second Season (By Vicki Morgan) Brian Head Women on Wednesdays, or as we call it, "WOW", just finished up our second season of skiing together. The ladies of Brian Head meet in the Navajo Lodge parking lot every Wednesday at 10 A.M. to ski and visit. Later, we wrap up our afternoon of skiing at Navajo Lodge with a cup of hot cocoa, coffee, or tea. We have a fun and welcoming group! Our skiers include: Julie Saemisch, Betty Phelan, Shufen Beney, Lynn Mulder, Charlene Foley, Rose Titus, Patti Haefner, and Vicki Morgan. Other ladies that are parttime residents of Brian Head also join us when they are in Town. Our ski abilities range from Beginner/Intermediate to Advanced. We have women that have grown up in Canada, skied Europe, and skied throughout the United States. Then we have women like me, a native Californian, who used to ski maybe two or three times a year. So it doesn t matter what your ski ability is, we d love to have any lady interested in skiing, join us next season. It's a lot of fun and it's a great way to get to know your neighbors in our beautiful little town of Brian Head! This is a fun event we look forward to each year. After the busy ski season and after the snow has melted, we clean up debris from winter to prepare for a fun summer season in our beautiful community. The clean-up is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Come sign up for a street to clean, grab some gloves and a garbage bag, and enjoy the fresh mountain air while contributing to the beautification of our Town. Immediately following the clean-up, there will be a community barbecue for all participants. We will then celebrate Arbor Day by planting a few trees around the Town Park/Pavilion/Pond area. Town Clean-up from 9 am to 12 noon; Town Barbecue from 12 noon to 1:00 pm; Arbor Day tree planting starts at 1:00 pm. June 23, 2017 Opening Day of Summer Operations at Brian Head Ski Resort! June 30 July 4, Independence Day Celebration Throughout the July 4 th weekend there will be live music each day during various times, artisan vendors, and activities for the entire family! On Tuesday, July 4 th, the day will begin with the annual pancake breakfast sponsored by our local volunteer fire department. As soon as the sun goes down that evening, enjoy our annual spectacular fireworks display. We invite you all to come join the fun! July 2 August 19, 2017 Chasing Light Plein Air Festival and Exhibition Presented by SUMA and Cedar Breaks National Monument. Sixteen of the region s top plein air painters will paint at Cedar Breaks, as well as other favorite southern Utah locations, from July 2 6, The work each artist creates during that week will be on exhibit and for sale in SUMA beginning July 8, with a Wet Paint Gala and sale on July 7 th. Artists include: Arlene Braithwaite, Doug Braithwaite, Royden Card, Michelle Condrat, Cody DeLong, Bruce Gomez, George Handrahan, Brad Holt, Susie Hyer, Mary Jabens, William Scott Jennings, Roland Lee, Valerie Orlemann, Rachel Pettit, Bonnie Posselli, and Ellie Wilson. On July 8th there will be an artist paint out (free for all to attend and participate) and from July 8 th through August 19 th all art exhibited will be for sale! sumafriends@suu.edu for more information. July 15 & 16, 2017 Classic Rock Music Festival (free admission) Giant Steps Lodge (329 South Highway 143) from 9:30 am to 10:00 pm. Come enjoy two days of live music with vendors, food, and all kind of fun activities. There will be a variety of performers, including: Yellow Brick Road, Full Tilt Boogie, Safety Orange, and Kelly Sheehan. July 22, rd Annual Brian Head Resort Car Show Giant Steps Lodge (329 South Highway 143) from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. Free admission for spectators to come check out 100s of the hottest cars around! There is a $50 entry fee to register your car into the car show. Live bands will be performing: Dakota Nights at 1:00 pm and Fiyah Rootz at 4:30 pm. August 5, 2017 Brian Head Resort Festival of Flavors Brian Head Resort will once again be hosting this year s Festival of Flavors. It will take place at Giant Steps Lodge (329 South Highway 143) from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm. A family friendly event with great food, tastings from local Utah breweries, vineyards and distilleries as well as wonderful live music, local artisan vendors and all of our exciting base activities. Plan to take in the fresh mountain air and cool temperatures while you enjoy a glass of locally produced Chardonnay or a delicious pint of Amber Ale while live music plays throughout the day. Mountain biking, scenic chair rides, a zip line, and a rock climbing wall are just a few of the fun activities to keep you and the kids entertained all day long. Live band will be performing throughout the day. August 12, rd Annual BBQ, Blues & Brews At Giant Steps Lodge (329 South Highway 143) from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Enjoy live music, activities for the whole family, and the best food and beer around while BBQ teams from all over throw down to win thousands in cash and prizes. Live bands will be performing throughout the day; Soul What? At 1:00 pm and Full Tilt Boogie at 4:30 pm August 12, 2017 Flyin Brian Mountain Bike Races The go-ride gravity series offers some of America s best gravity racing! August 26, 2017 IMCCC Mountain Bike Race 9:30 am to 6:00 pm at Giant Steps Lodge (329 South Highway 143). Visit imccc.org for pre-registration and more information. XC race begins in the morning. Downhill race in the afternoon. Registration fee: $30 per race. On-site registration and packet pickup will be available on race day. 3 June 2017 Brian Head Town News Page 3 Brian Head Town Scavenger Hunt Are you looking for a fun family activity? Brian Head Town has a three-level scavenger hunt year round. The summer scavenger hunt is from June through September each year. Kids (ages 1 to 18) can come into the Town Hall (56 N Highway 143) and pick up the instructions. If you complete all instructions you come back to the Town Hall and get a prize! There is a prize for each level completed. The hunt takes you all around Brian Head. It s a fun way to explore our community and get to know a little bit about us. Brian Head Town Hires Two Public Works Technicians In April 2017, Brian Head Town hired two new Public Works Technicians Rex Rose & Jason Wallis. After having them with us for a little over a month, they are fitting in well with our crew. The Public Works now has the following employees in its department: Shane Williamson (Public Works Director); Tom Gurr, Chris Leigh, Kasey Hatch, Rex Rose, and Jason Wallis. Wendy Dowland is the Administrative Assistant for the Public Works department. Town Tidbits Highway 148 is now open! The Cedar Breaks Visitor Center is open for summer visitors! The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources/Fish and Game Department will be restocking the fish at Brian Head s Bristlecone Pond the first part of June The 2 main species to be stocked will be Tiger Trout and Rainbow Trout. They will be adding tagged fish for the annual fishing contest. The contest is for those between the ages of If you catch a tagged fish, bring it in to the Brian Head Town Office and receive a prize! Watch for information on the annual ATV Rally, which will be held in August this year. The planning for this fun event is in the works. Utility fees are increasing as of July 1, 2017 (when the new budget year goes into effect). Residential sewer fees are increasing by $3. Rex Rose Rex Rose was hired as a full-time employee. He comes to us with high qualifications in road work, having previously worked for Western Rock Products for several years. He has a wife (Megan) and 4 kids (Quintin, Treyden, Madison, and Makraylee). Rex enjoys the outdoors. He loves to camp with his family and gather wood. Jason & Cécile Wallis Jason Wallis was hired as a part-time employee. He and his wife (Cécile) recently moved to Brian Head from California. He has made a big impression on the local residents, after having his own local handy-man business. He is a hard worker and is highly qualified to work in the Public Works Department. The Wallis s love the outdoors! They enjoy hiking, camping and racing motorcycles.

Nick Giffin is coming back from last year and Cody Deutschlander will be joining him. Nick works for Brian Head Resort during the winter months, where he helps groom the ski runs. He is also a member of our local volunteer fire department. Cody recently moved to Southern Utah from California. He enjoys boating and river rafting. And, yes, he has a famous last name he is the grandson of our very own Mayor Deutschlander. Welcome to our staff Nick and Cody! Nick Giffin Cedar Breaks National Park s Summer Star Parties (from National Park Service website) Date & Time: Every Saturday weekly from May 26, 2017 to August 12, 2017 (8:30 to 11:00 pm) Fee Information: Park Fees Apply Contact Information: Go to the website at Want to learn more about the night sky? Join park rangers for night sky programs and telescope viewing held every Saturday at Point Supreme. Beginning shortly before sunset, rangers lead a presentation on a night-sky related topic. As the skies darken, you'll have a chance to get an upclose look at celestial wonders (such as the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, star clusters and galaxies) through park telescopes. You can also be guided on laserpowered tours of the constellations and explore celestial mythology. No reservation is needed - just dress warmly and bring a red flashlight if you have one! Visitors are also welcome to bring their own telescopes. Telescope viewing may be cancelled due to cloud cover or storms. Check out the Information Center for event updates & star gazing supplies! Cody Deutschlander From the Public Works Department Please DO NOT put construction debris in the Town dumpsters! They are for household garbage only! Our dumpsters are wearing out fast because of the heavy garbage. You can take your construction/heavy debris to the landfill in Parowan located at 1200 West Old Highway 91. Hours opened: Tuesday Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. Closed Sundays, Mondays, and all major holidays. The Holidays for 2017 are New Year s Day - January 2 (observed); Memorial Day May 29; Independence Day - July 4; Pioneer Day July 24; Labor Day September 4; Thanksgiving Day November 23; and Christmas Day December 25.
