June 2012 Brian Head Town News Volume 6 Town Manager s Message Our hearts go out to the many who are struggling financially during the continued economic slowdown in our nation. In response to this, the Town Council has reduced Brian Head property taxes by 5% in 2011 and plans to do the same in That s a 10% reduction in the past two years! It is important to realize the significance trees have in communities. Brian Head Town already has a natural abundance of trees; however, it is also essential to plant them around our Town for landscaping purposes. Trees and shrubs are valuable additions to most property. They provide beauty, wind protection, shade, wildlife habitat visual screening, and other benefits. In contrast, the low interest rates and construction costs have provided an outstanding opportunity for the Town to proceed with many projects that were cost prohibitive a few years ago. A new 1 million gallon water tank was completed in 2010, the new public safety building in 2011, and a 1,500 foot deep culinary water well will be finished in (continued on page 4) ************************************** Brian Head Town Receives Tree City USA Status Mayor H.C. Deutschlander, Betty Phelan, and Kathy Freeberg (members of the Brian Head Tree Commission), recently attended the 5 th Annual Southern Utah Municipal Forestry Workshop & Tree City USA Luncheon, held in Cedar City. The workshop gave several tips for planting and maintaining trees. Brian Head Town, along with 4 other Utah communities, received their first year award for becoming a Tree City USA member. Those pictured at the right from the Forestry, Fire and State Lands are Danon Hulet (Urban Forester), Tim Garcia (Deputy Director), and Ron Wilson (Area Manager). Tree City USA is an organization that encourages the planting, nurturing, and celebration of trees. Brian Head Town receives the Tree City USA award. Some interesting facts about Tree City USA: There are 80 communities in the State of Utah that have the Tree City USA status. 68% of the Utah population lives in a Tree City USA community! 3,400 communities in the United States are members of Tree City USA. Over 135 million people live in a Tree City USA community. Think about it! What would your community look like without trees? Trees are beautiful and we love them!

Special Olympics Winter Games The Special Olympics Winter Games regional finals were held here in Brian Head on March 17, 2012. The weather was not cooperative.

These athletes competed in snowshoeing events ranging from 25 to 800 meters.

Special Olympics Winter Games The Special Olympics Winter Games regional finals were held here in Brian Head on March 17, The weather was not cooperative..... it was windy with poor visibility caused by the blowing snow. Twenty athletes participated, coming from as far away as St. George. These athletes competed in snowshoeing events ranging from 25 to 800 meters. Brian Head Resort supported this event by providing a marked track next to the Navajo parking lot and volunteers to organize the athletes and time the different events. Brian Head's own Sean Phelan won gold medals in the 200, 400, and 800 meter events. This qualified Sean to compete in the State finals held in Ogden, Utah on March 24, Again, Sean did not disappoint. He won gold medals in the 200, 400, and 800 meter events. Good job Sean congratulations on winning the gold! The October 2011 landslide destroyed a onethird mile section of SR-14 The debris is over 100 feet deep in some areas Crews will remove more than 400,000 cubic yards of material which is equivalent to: 40,000 dump trucks. If placed on a football field, debris would be 62 feet high Landslide material contains a lot of rocks, some as big as homes and 18-wheelers The project will address four areas along SR-14. Main slide area. 400,000 yards of material will be moved to completely restore a 2,000-foot stretch of SR-14 Rebuild end of tunnel under SR-14 and restore shoulder 3. 3 June 2012 Brian Head Town News Page 3 Brian Head Events June, July & August, 2012 (contact Brian Head Town at for more information on events) June 2, 2012 Utah s Free Fishing Day (enjoy the wonderful fishing in all lakes and streams surrounding Brian Head) July 4, 2012 Brian Head Fire Department s Annual Pancake Breakfast (this annual fundraiser will be held at Giant Steps Lodge from 7 to 10:30 am). A street dance, featuring the band Muddy Boots will be held from 7 to 10 pm. This first annual event is sponsored by High Country Realty, Brian Head Interiors, and Brian Head General Store. After the dance, the annual Red, White and Blue Fireworks display will begin. Come and spend the day at Brian Head and enjoy the breakfast, street dance, and fireworks! You will be guaranteed a good time. All ages are welcome! July 5, 6 & 7, th Annual Arts & Crafts Festival (location Brian Head Town Mall Village Way). There will be lots of crafty vendors and good food! Set-up for the Festival will begin the morning of Thursday, July 5 th to noon. The Festival will be from noon to 6 pm on Thursday (July 5 th ) and from 9 am to 6 pm on Friday and Saturday (July 6 th & 7 th ). There are 3 events associated with the Rally a youth ATV education certification course; obstacle course events; and the ATV Poker Run ride from Brian Head to Panguitch Lake. July 27 & 28, st Annual Shoot the Back Country Archery Shoot. Teen shooter passes are priced at $10 per day or $15 for the weekend. Adult shooter passes are priced at $30 per day or $50 for the weekend. Non-shooter passes are $5 for a single day or $10 for both days. 4 June 2012 Brian Head Town News Page 4 Town Manager s Message (Continued from page 1) We are excited to be in the planning stages for a new lake that will serve as a water storage reservoir and urban fishery right here in Brian Head. The area will start near Vasels Road at Hwy 143 (near the south Brianwood Condominiums) and run south between Hwy 143 and the north-south section of Vasels Road until it meets the dike running between Chairlifts 1 and 8. Engineers are designing an area that will hold between 60 and 100 acre feet of water and is anticipated to be about 30 feet deep. It will hold enough water to sustain fish during the winter and possibly be used for ice skating. The plan is to have a boat ramp at the Town Park and picnic tables and a walking trail around the reservoir. Brian Head Town Clean-up Day is scheduled for Wednesday, June 13, Join us in the morning trash bags and gloves will be provided. Lunch will be served after. This is a fun community event! Public Safety Director There is a bit of nostalgia around Town Hall these days. Brian Head Public Safety Director, Gary Bulloch, is retiring at the end of June. He has been with Brian Head for nearly 16 years, and served the last 10 as Public Safety Director. He also served Brian Head Town as the interim Town Manager on several occasions. The reservoir came about in a cooperative effort with the Parowan Irrigation Company and the Town to put Townowned water to use in Brian Head. If all goes as planned, construction is anticipated to start this fall. Stop by Town Hall some time to see a larger picture of the proposed project. -Bryce Haderlie, Town Manager ******************************************* Grooming the Trails at Brian Head Brian Head Town s seasonal parks workers have been busy this year. As part of their job duties they groom the hiking and OHV trails in our beautiful Town. This is an important job and helps those who enjoy outdoor activities. We have such fantastic scenery here on the mountain (year round) and hiking or riding your ATV is a fun way to enjoy the day. So... pack a lunch and bring your family, your significant other or just yourself and come and check it out! You will want to experience our great outdoors again and again! Town Trail June 2012 (located in front of The Lofts) Mayor Deutschlander and Chief Bulloch cut the ribbon at the dedication of the new Public Safety Building (December 13, 2011) Thanks to Chief Bulloch, Brian Head Town Fire Department was one of the first to be brought into the 21 st century. He made sure we kept up-to-date with the latest in equipment and training, according to Brad Benson, Deputy Marshal. Chief Bulloch has been a devoted employee and will be greatly missed here on the mountain. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors! Please join us in celebrating Chief Bulloch s many years of dedicated service to Brian Head Town at a retirement party held in his honor on Friday, June 29, 2012, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. The party will be at the new Public Safety Building located at 535 South Vasels Road, Brian Head, Utah. 5 June 2012 Brian Head Town News Page 5 Brian Head Gets Eclipsed! (by Julie Saemisch) The annular eclipse that took place on May 20, 2012 was a spectacular event! There were thousands of people in Southern Utah who witnessed this amazing site. Sunset on May 20 th was very special, as Brian Head experienced a rare annular eclipse. The full moon s shadow fell in front of the sun without completely covering it, creating a spectacular ring of fire. While Kanarraville was advertised as the perfect location for viewing the eclipse, Brian Head was well within the sweet spot and had only four seconds less viewing time than the Kanarraville area. It was a little difficult to know what kind of crowd to expect since this is a rare event and there was no ability to predict how many people might want to visit, plus everyone knows that the weather can be a little unpredictable this time of year. But the evening was perfect; warm weather and no wind allowed over 400 people to ride the Giant Steps lift up to the top of Brian Head Resort and another 200 or so viewed the eclipse from Brian Head Peak. Each viewpoint within Cedar Breaks National Monument was filled with visitors who had set up solar telescopes and staked their real estate claim with lawn chairs and blankets. Fritz, wearing special viewing glasses, enjoys the Eclipse (photo courtesy of Mike Saemisch) While everyone was looking up at the sun with their special eclipse glasses on, another event was taking place on top of the Giant Steps lift viewing area. A young man from Salt Lake City brought his girlfriend to Brian Head to view the eclipse. Unbeknown to her, several of their friends were also here. The friends set the stage with a picnic blanket, candles, flowers and chocolates. The boyfriend led her to the blanket, got down on one knee and proposed during the maximum eclipse time for a special marriage proposal. She said, yes! Believe it or not, in 11 years Brian Head will have the opportunity to be near the center of another annular eclipse..... we will have more details as the date gets a little closer!
