2 Page: 2 From the East: Brethren, Summer is just a few weeks away when this Lodge will slip into the slower summer pace of operations after the June Stated meeting. I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy the incredible greenery before it turns gold and dries up and if you haven t been to the slopes to see the snow pack, please go soon. Enterprise will not go dark and many activities will continue routinely. The good news is we have no major repair or renovation projects pending for 2017 as we have in previous years but we will get the carpets cleaned. My wife Sal has worked a very affordable contract with a local cleaner agent and you will see the return on investment later this month. I think you will be surprised and pleased with the results. Speaking of cleaning, I would like to recognize and thank the crew who showed on Saturday, April 8th for Lodge Clean-up day. Kudos and sincerely appreciation for your time and labor to the upstairs and bathroom crew of Charles Aucoin, Stephan Parnow, Teresa Boyce and the Rainbow girls who killed a million spider webs and took the vacuum and dusters to deep-dark places; the kitchen crew of Sal Stone, Jess Dillwith and Tina Lavy who scrubbed off a year s accumulation of dust, grease, and sludge from the ovens, refrigerators, cabinets and floors. The kitchen was left clean and even more amazing odorless. May will have a one major event for the local Master Mason community, namely an outdoor 3rd Degree and BBQ planned for Saturday May 13th in the orchards just north of Yuba City. The last outdoor degree was over 10 years ago and has been sorely missed. This degree production is a joint effort of all the local Lodges and degree team reflects this with volunteers from Corinthian No. 9, Enterprise No. 70 and Nicholas No The candidate will be from Enterprise. Please come out, support the candidate, your Lodge and enjoy fine BBQ with your brothers and friends. Everyone is invited to the post degree BBQ. Congratulations and a BRAVO ZULU to Brothers Charles Aucoin and Jerry Spillers on the success of their Masonic training Tuesdays. The attendance has been picking up and the as Brothers discover these training days are about more than just ritual the floor is open to any topic from Masonic esoterica to myths and legends. The conversation is not limited, and I think if you attend just one event you will be hooked. I hope to see you at the next training day in May. Mason s for Mitts just hit the streets for This is an excellent Masonic Youth program that benefits a broad spectrum of California children and teenagers regardless of Masonic affiliation with an opportunity to play that traditional American past time baseball. And nothing says baseball more than the smell of a new-oiled glove and the sting of well thrown ball in the pocket. This is one of my favorite Masonic charity schemes and I encourage you to help fund it with a generous tax deductible donation. The May Stated meeting is your last chance to participate in the Grand Commandery of California s commemorative rifle raffle. The prize is a beautiful Henry rifle decorated as a tribute to American Masonry or if you d prefer something more liquid, $ in cash. I have just a very few tickets available at $10.00 each or a get a deal and purchase a book of five tickets for $ The drawing will be May 21st at Grand York Rite Sessions in Bakersfield. You don t have to be present to win. Please call or see me for more information on the scholarship or to purchase tickets. We still have to set a date for the La Porte summer picnic and the consensus is leaning to July. Jake Whitehead is the committee chairman and he is looking for additional volunteers to help set this event up. Please contact him via the Lodge app or . Sal and I look forward to seeing you at the Stated Meeting dinner on May 2nd. Please grab your spouse, a family member or friend and invite them along. Tony Stone Master
3 Page: 3 Brethren, a special event is scheduled for the May 2 nd stated meeting dinner. Attendance is requested and very much needed. During dinner, Rainbow for Girls Assembly 10 will be holding a desert auction, a fund raiser to replenish their operating fund that was exhausted attending Grand Assembly this year. Brothers, let us assemble as Masons of Enterprise No. 70 and stretch forth our hands of Charity in support of this worthy event. If you have not met these lovely young ladies, another reason to come. Jerry W. Spillers Junior Warden Your generous contribution makes a difference to California's public schools and Masonic relief efforts for some of our most vulnerable populations. We are grateful for your support.
4 Page: 4 From the West: Brethren, The month is fast approaching, and as I write this, I am reminded of Brotherly Love, and the continual friendship of Brother Masons. To aid and assist a distressed worthy brother is the duty we should all strife to uphold. Brother Anderson will do his second degree proficiency on our Tuesday night study session on the 25th if we have enough attendance to open lodge, I do invite and encourage all Fellow Crafts and Master Masons to attend. Rusty Nail Degree hosted by Corinthian Lodge from 9 till 1 on Saturday April 29, for all Master Masons who haven t been to lodge in a long time and needs a little help remembering things Our stated meeting will be on the 2nd of May, dinner will be at 6:30 followed by a dessert auction hosted by the Rainbow Girls. This is their Hope project fundraiser and I encourage all to attend with a sweet tooth and money to support the girls. Stated meeting starts at 7:30. On Saturday the 13th of May, Corinthian Lodge is hosting an outdoor degree; with members form all of our district lodges, to raise Brother Anderson. Directions and further details can be obtained from the Worshipful Bob Boyce or Nick Micheli. Our Hall Board is working to get everyone on board to view pictures of what the lodge will look like with a little face lift, if you haven t heard or haven t been to lodge in a while, please make an effort to come by or see Brother Paine and see how things are shaping up. Charles Aucoin, Senior Deacon

Enterprise Lodge #70 Website and Calendar And yes...we DO have a facebook page! GRAND LODGE OF CALIFORNIA Supporting Our Public Schools Masonic Senior Outreach Program Master & Wardens Retreats Registration and Info A bit of history. The Grand Lodge of England, founded in 1717, was established at the beginning of the Georgian Period (1714 to 1830), when it was customary for the military to fire a volley honoring a person of distinction. In June 1741, the Dublin News Letter reported an open air celebration at Coleraine, which was attended by the mayor and army officers. Toasts were dedicated to the king and royal family, and it is noted that " at each toast there was a volley from the Army." Our ancient brothers festive boards were private affairs, not conducive to actually firing guns, and so the glasses used to mimic their sound became known as "firing glasses" or "firing cannons." The practice of rapping glasses upon the dinner table became the preferred form of acclamation to honor a toast. The earliest glasses used in this tradition, known as "thumping" or "hammering glasses," were designed to withstand the shock of being brought down heavily upon the table. When glasses struck the table, they emitted a loud and sharp report, quite similar to the crack of a rifle shot. Distinctive rituals were developed accordingly. Filling the glasses with wine was known as "charging the cannons with powder." Once each glass was filled, the lodge master would command, "Present arms. Take aim. FIRE!" A practiced effort would be made for everyone to drink simultaneously and then bring their glasses down hard upon the table in an attempt to create the sound of rifle fire. This would be followed by a clapping of hands, similar to our current public display of grand honors. It is important to remember that the convivial and customary practice of toasting became a part of Masonic culture because it was practiced in the broader society at the time of the fraternity s founding. There is no Masonic symbolism or hidden, esoteric meaning in the description or actions associated with "Masonic fire." SAVE THE DATE!!
