Submitted By Dave Byrne Reflecting on 2014, I would first like to thank all the members of the club for their participation and help during the past year. How about it we had a great year of flying, eating and fun! Our membership is very active and we shared many hours of flying, instruction and great conversation. And secondly, thanks to the 2014 BOD for their tireless efforts in keeping the club agenda moving forward. We got a lot done at the field: new carpet was installed; five new flying stations installed; and runway improvements were made (with more to come). Thanks again to all that volunteered to work on our field. At our December General Membership meeting we had the honor and pleasure of hosting a speaker, Bob Ashby, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen. Bob gave an informative talk of what it was like for he and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen during WW II. The barriers they encountered and had to endure made their successes and contributions to the war effort even more rewarding. We hope we get a return visit for Bob to continue his story. We had our annual Fly & Fry event the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It was the usual success. We served over 110 people and deep fried 8 turkeys this year. A big thanks goes out to our bird fryers Mickey Ohland & Mike Wyman and to all those that brought sides to share. Our next event is our First Day Fly In on Thursday, January 1 st. The BOD will be serving breakfast, including pancakes and sausage. I would like to wish each of you a wonderful holiday season. Whatever holiday you celebrate, may it be filled with good health and happiness, and the promise of a great New Year. Hope to see you on Thursday, January 1 st for the First Day Fly In. See you on the flight line Dave Also at the December meeting, we passed the proposed changes for the East Valley By Laws and we will have the changes updated in our website shortly. We elected three new board members along with a new position as stipulated by the new By Laws. Our new vice president is Lin Andresen; our new Secretary is Sid Frede; our new Safety Officer is Don Nelson; and the new position of Membership Director has been filled by John Pomroy. Thanks for stepping up and providing your time & efforts for our club. I also want to thank Alan Moulton and Mike Jeffries, outgoing Vice President and Secretary for their service to the club for the past two years. 3

Submitted By Verlin Boeder Please, ware your EVA club badge at the field!!! Is everyone having fun? I hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather this time of the year offers. It seems like all is going well and renewals are at a brisk pace this year. With John Pomroy doing all the membership work, all I have to do is watch the funds roll into our bank account. Those that have not renewed yet please take the time to fill out the membership form so we can get our club roster up to date with all correct information. Our great financial status allows us to do projects and have funds for a party or two. With all major expenses paid, EVA cash on hand is $15, and the reserve fund is at $24, If anyone has a project they would like to see started please bring it to the Board of Directors. The next big jobs will be to fix the surface of the main runway and repair of the flood damage to the entrance off Ironwood road - stay tuned - more info on that to come. EVA has a new sales person for caps, t-shirts, etc. and it is Don Nelson see him at any club event. If you are the last person to leave our flying field in the evening, be sure to lock the gate!!!! Happy flying and smooth landings, lets all enjoy a great hobby. Verlin 4

Submitted By Mike Jefferies EVA General Membership Meeting December 3, 2014 Minutes Total Member Attendance 55 President Dave Byrne opens meeting. One guest in attendance, Welcome Andrew Deck as a new EVA club member. No new solo pilots. Program - Welcome Bob Ashby. Tuskegee Airmen Bob gave a great talk, who is 89 years old. Highlighting how the black airmen we always discriminated and segragated but were one of the most successful air combat divisions during WWII. Most interesting fact was how Lt Col Bengamin O Davis, commander of the Tuskegee airmen ordered all fighter escorts to stay with the bombers during the WWII bombing runs. The fighter escorts were only, under court marshall offense, to break escort if the enemy fighters attacked the formation. They were not to go after the enemy planes. This is actually different in approach at the time from the other escort wings. The HBO movie is about 80 percent fact and worth watching. The Tuskegee Airmen Corporation do great community work in many countries. The Phoenix chapter which club member Bill Norwood is now assuming President is the only chapter to obtain a commemorative date. The fourth Tuesday of March. By Law Changes The membership passed three by-law changes, by vote. The creation of the elected voting position of membership officer. This will be a two year position the same as all other officers. The by-laws will read the membership dues is $50. Any member wishing to be an elected Board of Director officer must be a member in good standing for one year Elections Vice President - Lin Andresen (replaces Alan Moulton) Secretary - Sid Frede (replaces Mike Jeffries) Elected Safety Officer - Don Nelson (replaces Larry Ledger) Membership Officer - John Pomroy (New BOD position) President Report Event calendar will be updated and posted to the website. New flight station are installed at the field. Looking at some potential runway work to clean up the ruts. Working on entrance potentially installing some culvert pipe to prevent the erosion. Treasurer Report We have $16,400 in the bank. We are expecting the $3,600 lease and have spend $1,500 in parties and events for the club membership. Secretary Report All minutes for last meeting in newsletter. Membership Report We have 163 renewed members. Thank you to all that renewed through the website. No Old/New Business Meeting Adjourned Outgoing Secretary Mike Jeffries... Final secretary notes. As I leave the Board of Directors of EVA, I wish Sid the best of luck as incoming Secretary. I am sure it will be as fulfilling as it was for me and I thank the membership of EVA for making it such an rewarding position. EVA is a great organization and the membership is what makes it that great organization. 5

SAFETY CORNER Submitted by: Lin Andresen Hello fellow EVA modelers. It's winter time but you would never know it with the great weather we've had all Fall. I would like to welcome back all of our Winter visitor members and wish you a wonderful flying season. As you can see, we have done a bunch of work at the club site. Not very long ago, many of our club members came out to the club site and replaced the carpet in the pit and start-up areas. It took a lot of effort but it was well worth the labor. As you probably have noticed by now, we have new chain-link flight station safety barriers. The barriers were constructed by Verlin Boeder and installed by him and other club members. The new carpet and chain-link barriers not only make our site look better, they also make it safer. I suppose you have all seen those drones by now. Some are four motored (quad copters), some have six motors, they even have them with seven motors. The drones come in all sizes and vary in complexity. Some of these drones have G.P.S. units on them for guidance and control, some are mounted with cameras, some are even flown with a "smart" phone instead of a transmitter. Yes, these drones are great pieces of technology but the do have, and can cause serious problems. According to the Washington Post, pilots around the United States have reported a surge in near collisions and other dangerous encounters with small drones in the past six months at a time when the FAA is gradually opening the nation's skies to remotely controlled aircraft. Since June 1, commercial airlines and private pilots and air traffic controllers have alerted the FAA to 25 episodes in which small drones have come within a few seconds or a few feet of crashing into a much larger aircraft. The FAA considers these close-calls to be presenting a new threat to aviation safety. Why should this concern us? Well, because of these incidents, and other drone-related safety breaches such as flying over crowds or near buildings, the FAA may decide to ban or greatly restrict RC model flying activities. As AMA members, we know the value of safe flying. If you buy one of these toys for someone else, please explain the dangers of the drone and and what their safety responsibilities are. If too many bad things happen regarding the flying of the drones, the government may categorize all model aircraft as drones and make our hobby obsolete. Well that's all folks. Remember, safety is no accident. You can buy these drones at hobby shops, online, at toy stores, and just about any department store. Now, as members of the AMA and EVA we are well informed about model safety. We know not to fly over crowds of people, near buildings and houses, or near full-size aircraft. Many of the drones now being flown, are flown by people who have not been taught about these safety concerns. Most don't know about the liabilities of flying recklessly. 6

Submitted By John Pomroy Membership News: Thank You! As we approach the midpoint of our annual renewal season I want to say thank you for utilizing the new system. Things are going great and we are at about 180 renewals at the time of this writing. A couple things to note: 1) If you are mailing a check for your payment, be sure and make the check out to East Valley Aviators. Making it out to EVA does not allow us to clearly identify ourselves with the bank. You may be asked to write a new check with the proper information if it has EVA as the payee 2) When providing a mailing address on your application, whether online or on paper, the street address needs to be where you want your renewal stuff mailed. Don t provide an address that is inactive at the time you make your renewal or you will not receive your sticker and gate code. 3) On the application form, please indicate if you are willing to be an instructor or are in need of an instructor. We are using this data to refresh our training program and need your help during the application process by providing your status 4) Let me know if you are having any problems with the new system! We ve gotten virtually no complaints so far but that doesn t mean you shouldn t speak up if you ve run into issues. I will do my best to address them immediately and if that s not possible, I will incorporate your feedback to make things better and easier for next year. If you haven t renewed your dues yet, here s the skinny on what to do. What you do 1) Goto and click the Membership tab at the top of the page. This will take you to the Membership Application page. Alternatively, click this link which will take you straight to the renewal application page à 2) Fill in your information. Note there are required fields that must be filled in correctly 3) At the bottom of the page, click the Submit button. This will take you to the payment page 4) On the payment page, follow the payment instructions. You can elect to pay your dues via Paypal by selecting the appropriate Buy Now button or mail a personal check to the club membership officer What happens next 1) Once you ve successfully completed the above, the club membership officer receives an notifying him/her that you ve renewed for If you ve paid your dues via Paypal, your 2015 renewal sticker and new gate lock combination info will be sent out to you the same day. This is the fastest and easiest way to complete the renewal process! 7

2) If you filled out your renewal application online but choose to pay via personal check, your 2015 renewal sticker and new gate lock combination info will be sent out once your payment arrives in the mail to our membership officer If you can t utilize the online renewal form, we ll still require you to fill out a paper copy of the renewal form so that we have your latest and correct information. This is necessary to correct a long standing problem of people s contact information going out of date without us knowing about it. The upside is you are guaranteed to receive the club newsletter, get notification of important events via (e.g. rain lock is on), and we can successfully send your renewal sticker and lock combo to you in the mail each and every year. Paper forms will be available at the field over the Tx impound starting on Oct. 1 st, 2014 and made available at the October 2014, December 2014, January 2015 and February 2015 club meetings. Note that you will need to fill out the paper form (or go online) before your check will be accepted and your renewal sticker issued. In summary, we strongly encourage the use of the website renewal page and paying via Paypal to complete your 2015 membership renewal versus the paper form and personal check methods. The online method is the fastest, most accurate method for you and the club to get your information accurately as well as saving your treasurer and membership officer a lot of work processing your application and payment. Lastly, should you invite or have a prospective new member approach you about how to join, the process is the same as for renewals. Please encourage those prospective new members to use the online system outlined above. These instructions will also be posted at the field next to the Membership Application forms over the TX impound. Should you have any questions or problems, please feel free to call the membership officer, John Pomroy, at or send him an message via the club website and hit the Contact Us tab at the top or click this link which will take you straight to the renewal page 8

Submitted by: Mickey Ohland New Year s Eve is one of the favorite celebration days for many people. Parties aside, the impending New Year typically brings hope for a more prosperous and happy 365 days. There are also some fun facts and trivia associated with the celebration. The first New Year was celebrated 4,000 years ago by the ancient Babylonians. It s tradition to ring in New Year s with family and friends because the first people you see will either give you good luck or bad luck. So make sure to keep friends close and foes very far away. More vehicles are stolen on New Year s Day than any other holiday. The top three places to celebrate New Year s Eve are Las Vegas, Disney World and of course, New York City. Internationally, one of the biggest celebrations is in Sydney, Australia. More than 80,000 fireworks are set off from Sydney Harbor Bridge. In Italy, people wear red underwear on New Year s Day to bring good luck all year long. It s good luck to eat foods like black eyed peas, ham and cabbage because it is thought they bring prosperity. But if you want to have a happy new year, don t eat lobster or chicken. Lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune. Chinese New Year is celebrated the second full moon after the winter solstice. Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hashanah. Apples and honey are traditionally eaten. In ancient Rome the new year began on March 1. The traditional New Year s song, Auld Lang Syne, means, times gone by. The top 10 resolutions are usually to lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, stop smoking, stick to a budget, save money, get more organized, be more patient, find a better job and to just be a better person over all. Using a baby to signify the New Year began in ancient Greece around 600 B.C. Time Square New Year's Eve Ball was first dropped in 1907 after there was a fireworks ban. Back then, a 700-pound ball embellished with 25-watt bulbs made of iron and wood was dropped. Now, however, it weighs 11,875 pounds, is 12 feet in diameter and is adorned with 2,668 Waterford crystals. The tradition has continued in Times Square, except for in 1942 and The ball was not lowered because of wartime restrictions. 9

The Cuban 8: How to fly it: Fly straight and level into the wind and at point 'A', in the picture below, apply full power and up elevator to initiate a climb, as if starting an inside loop. Let the airplane go in to its vertical climb and roll over on to its back at the top of the loop, point 'B'. Continue with the loop but at point 'C' apply aileron to smoothly roll through 180 degrees, bringing the airplane right side up. Use elevator to maintain a 45 degree dive. Continue the brief dive and level out at the altitude at which you entered the maneuver. As soon as you've leveled out, point 'D', begin a second loop and repeat the process of letting the airplane roll over on to its back, point 'E', before applying aileron at the start of the dive, point 'F', to roll through 180 degrees. Continue the 45 degree dive and start to recover at point 'G', to resume straight and level flying at your original altitude. The Split-S: How to fly it: Starting with straight and level flight at a higher altitude, the airplane is rolled through 180 degrees at the start of the maneuver. Up elevator is applied as soon as the airplane is inverted, and the throttle reduced. The airplane then enters an 'inverted' dive and is flown towards the ground. Keeping up elevator applied, the airplane is pulled out of the dive and returned to straight and level flight to exit the Split-S maneuver. No rolling out is necessary, as the airplane will already be the correct way up. To test your accuracy successive Cuban 8s can be flown while trying to keep the cross-over point in the same place in the sky, and both loops equal size. 10
