Important Club News!!!! Remember to wear your EVA membership badge when you are at the field. MAY 2015 Membership Meeting and NIGHT FLY EVA Field Saturday, May 2 5:00 pm Thanks to all the EVA members who deposited their empty soda cans in the designated bin, we were able to buy 25 bucks worth of groceries for the local food bank in AJ. They serve the down and out and hungry so keep on recycling your cans in the bin provided at the field. Many thanks, Gene C. 2
Submitted by: Dave Byrne Hi all and welcome to this month s edition of Exhaust Systems. Things are starting to quiet down at the field as we work toward the end of our 2014/2015 season. Many of our winter visitors have headed for points north as things start to heat up in the valley. Hope everyone gets home safely and can make it back at the end of the summer/early fall. We had our usual great turnout for the Swap Meet & Cookout. We fed burgers, dogs & soon-to-be-famous, Mike Wyman s beer brats to more than 155 people. A lot of folks brought food to pass so many thanks to them, as well as to our chefs for cooking. I always love swap meets because someone s junk is someone else s treasure. I know I picked up a great set of hex wrenches at a good price. I want to take this time to thank the EVA Board of Directors for their time and effort in moving the club s business along for another year. As many of you know, we meet almost every month to discuss the club s issues as well as to plan our event schedule. Also thanks to the club members for helping with our events, cleanups & field work throughout the year. Our club would not be the success that it is without these members as well as our BOD! As published on the AMA s web site: AMA Responds to the FAA s suas NPRM On February 23, 2015, the FAA published its proposed regulations for small unmanned aircraft systems (suas) as a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM). This began a 60-day period during which the public can comment on the proposed regulations. When finalized, the proposed rules would become the safety regulations for operating small, non-recreational, unmanned aircraft. The NPRM references FAA s June 2014 interpretation of the Special Rule. As indicated in detail in updates to our members last summer, the AMA has taken exception to several aspects of FAA s interpretation. Aside from this, and one exception that may impact model aircraft manufacturers, the new proposed rule essentially takes the language in the 2012 Special Rule for Model Aircraft (the AMA amendment) and places it in the federal aviation regulations. We encourage members to submit comments commending the FAA for appropriately separating model aviation from the new regulations and also encourage members to include in their comments the need to resolve the discrepancies stemming from the Interpretive Rule before finalizing the suas rule. AMA has created a suggested template for comments, which we strongly encourage you to edit and personalize. Unless extended, the deadline for submitting comments is 11:59 p.m., Friday, April 24, Many of you should be aware of the latest FAA NPRM. PLEASE get on the AMA website, read about this pronouncement and make comments to the FAA. Make yourself heard!!! Please be aware that we have moved the time for the last General Membership meeting of the 2014/2015 year from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 2 nd. Because of the full moon and because we have some food left over, we thought we would combine the last meeting with a night fly & cookout. Hope to see you at the last club meeting. That s all for now see you on the flight line. Dave 3
VICE PRESIDENT S REPORT Submitted by: Lin Andresen Hello fellow EVA modelers! I hope you have all had a great winter of flying. In the last few news articles I have talked about what a great club we all belong to and how there seems to be a vast variety of aircraft flown on any given day. We have big planes, small planes, electric planes, gas planes, nitro planes, gliders, helicopters, and what-evers. Although these aircraft can be so different, they also all have something in common; they all need to be set-up correctly before they will fly at their best. For an aircraft be able to operate at its best, it must be set-up correctly with some mechanical and radio adjustments incorporated. First, mechanical. Let's begin with servo installation. If your are setting up a foamie or small electric in which the servos are glued in place, skip the first step. For all other planes begin by making sure that when you install the rubber grommets and brass eyelets, you do it correctly. What I mean is, you have to install them so the wide brim of the eyelets are under the grommets (between them and the servo tray). Tighten the screws until their heads meet the brass bushing's top edge. The rubber grommet will be compressed a bit, but that's ok. The object is to have a secure, shock-mounted servo installation that won't move when the servo arm is deflected. The next step is very crucial. Before making any adjustments to the linkages connected to the servo arms, you need to make sure that all arms are traveling in the correct direction relative to the transmitter stick movement. Move both of the sticks to make sure that the rudder, ailerons, elevators, throttle, and flaps move in the correct direction. If any control surface is moving in the wrong direction, just hit the corresponding reverse switch on the transmitter and confirm that it is moving correctly now. This seems very basic, but I know of several planes that have crashed on the maiden flight do to a servo being reversed. Once it has been confirmed that all of the servos are moving in the correct direction, the next step is to make sure that the control linkages are set at 90 deg. to the servo arm. Probably the easiest way to accomplish this is to first apply power to the servos so the servo itself will be centered and then place the servo arm on the servo splines,(the trim adjustment must be centered at this time). You can use the sub-trim transmitter adjustment to more perfectly center the arm so it is finally 90 deg to the linkage. These servo install tips should help get the servo mounting and geometry close to perfect so your first flight with the aircraft will be safe and successful. One more little tip that can save your plane from crashing on its first flight is to make sure that your linkages don't come apart in flight. You should apply some Locktite or something similar on all metal to metal fasteners such as turnbuckles, and slip a short length of fuel line over the turn buckle to to keep it from spreading far enough to become disengaged. Well, it's been good talking to you all again and I hope this article helps in some way. And to our Winter Visitor friends, have a safe trip home and come back and join us again next year. 4

He helped clear up many of the mysteries of C-Rating, charge rate, balancing charging, storage charge, safely charging, ambient operating temperatures. There were many questions and a lively discussion! Thanks Mike for a very informative presentation. 6
Submitted by: Verlin Boeder Please, wear your EVA club badge at the field!!! Thanks everyone for choosing EVA as your RC flying home. This has been a great year -- the most successful I have seen in my 11 year tenure as EVA treasurer. Thanks again for your great support. A decision was made by the Board of Directors not to have include financial numbers presented in the newsletter report as a precaution for the Club. If anyone wants financial details contact me and I will give you what I know. The books are always open for anyone to see. Increasing the yearly due by $10.00 to $50.00 per year gave the Club the extra financial boost we needed. Financial the Club is in great shape. We now have the ability to accomplish projects such as runway repair and upgrade. Also, we will repair the front entrance road and smooth out the bumps. We hope to get this accomplished over the summer months while the field usage is lower. We will have to close the runway for a few days while the work is being done. More on this in the future as the project gets started. EVA has a new sales person for caps, t-shirts, etc. and it is Don Nelson see him at any club event. Our final event for the 2014/2015 year will be May 2nd with a night fly and cook-out along with a short meeting. See you there. The Know it All Modeler A very knowledgeable modeler with a know-it-all arrogant attitude challenged club members that he could answer any model related questions. For a small $5 bet, he would go around and ask each member to ask one question. If he answered wrong, he would lose the bet. True to his words, he could answer all questions until finally no modelers would take up the challenge. Always on the lookout for a new victim, one day the arrogant modeler came across a new novice member. I challenge you that we will take a turn to ask model-related questions, said the modeler. But because you are a novice, if I can t answer your question, I ll pay you $100 dollars. But if you can t answer my question, you ll pay me $5. The novice just wanted to get on with his flying and refused the bet. However, after repetitive, annoying words from the arrogant modeler, the novice just wanted him off his back so he accepted the bet. The novice asked his question first: What airplane has five wings, three tails, and one aileron, fitted with only an O.S. 28 and can go up to 250 mph? After a long thought, the arrogant modeler concluded for the firsttime, he did no know the answer and paid the novice $100. So what s the airplane called? asked the arrogant modeler. I don t know, said the novice. He handed over the $5 and pocketed the remaining $95 for himself. Then he got on with his flying! If you are the last person to leave our flying field in the evening, be sure to lock the gate!!!! Happy flying and smooth landings, lets all enjoy a great hobby. Verlin 7
Dead-Stick Landings Superior Pilot: Def. A pilot who uses superior judgment to keep himself out of situations that might cause him to have to use his superior flying skills. Knowing how to make a dead-stick landing can help make you a superior pilot. Some of us think that if you prepare well enough, a dead-stick landing will never happen. But even the best preparation in the world can still allow for this event to happen. All it takes is for your engine to stop just once during flight. To make the best of this sudden event, you should be well-prepared. 6. Pay attention to ground speed. You can cover more ground going downwind than up. When dead-stick and turning into the wind, you will lose a lot of ground speed, so make your final turn short, or if you can t make the turn, land downwind. 7. Set up your tank clunk. Make sure the fuel pickup clunk is not touching the back of your fuel tank. Set it up so that the fuel pickup is free to move from the bottom to the top. Now go fly right and practice a few dead-stick landings. 1. Practice for a sudden loss of power. When looking for something to do during your next flight, why not try a few dead-stick landings. Just cut the power back to idle and try to make the runway. Even better, have a helper call dead-stick and then cut to idle. This will introduce a sense of urgency to the drill. Your helper may even get some kicks out of trying to see if he can force you not to make the runway without adding power. 2. At the first sign of a loss of power, head toward yourself. This gives you the maximum amount of altitude and the minimum distance to make the runway or landing area. 3. Keep your altitude when your airplane is distant. Don t fly low and far away. If you are distant, you will need altitude to trade for speed in order to make the runway. 4. Use a timer. If you prudently set a timer to time out when you have used no more than 75% of your tank, you will be able to more easily determine when your gas supply will run out. 5. Watch your speed and altitude. Without power (dead-stick), the only way to gain flying speed is to dive. If the airplane stalls, it may lose all of its altitude at once. 8
