You must wear your club issued badge while flying in the flight stations. 72 MHz flyers must follow the "Pin Wins" rule and pull your frequency pin and place your club issued badge on the frequency board. 2 President's Podium Submitted By Dave Byrne March is just around the corner, which means spring Cactus Baseball League has started, college basketball s March Madness begins and our winter visitors will be heading north. As always, the winter flying season flew by (pun intended) in a heartbeat. At least that s what it feels like to me. We had a number of club activities that many of you had a chance to participate in and I hope you also enjoyed. We ll have our annual send-off for our club s snowbirds on Saturday, March 1 6th. It will include a swap meet and lunch (burgers & brats most likely). We will also have a.25 race that morning for your entertainment. The swap meet will be for club members only. Verlin will have a club donation table also. The club has made some good coin from past donations, so please consider your items to be donated. A week later, March 23rd & 24th, we will host the Cactus Classic IMAC event at our field. The field will be closed for the two days as well as on Friday afternoon for practice. We will need the usual complement of volunteers to help make this event run smoothly. Mark your calendars and come out and see the Southwest region s finest in aerobatic & freestyle flying. that was flying did not have a club badge on while in the flight station. He approached the pilot and discovered he was not a club member, was not a guest of a club member and instructed him that he was not allowed to fly at our field. There were also a number of other club members out at the field at the time. I m pointing this out because no one else challenged this individual as to his status as a club member. When I say challenged, I don t mean being nasty about it. There should be no problem to ask in a friendly, courteous manner as to a person s club status. We need to protect the use of our field so we have it to use in the future. The person that was asked to stop flying could have been a safety hazard to our club members and could cause physical harm. In addition, he has not been trained or read and agreed to the rules for flying at our club field. Please step up and make sure only club members and their guests are flying at our field. Please help protect our investment! The next club meeting will be at VDO on Wednesday, March 6th. We ll have a presentation by Richard Kelly on his work in mapping the moon. 4 Treasurer's Report Submitted By Verlin Boeder As in past years, the financial statement for the previous year is published in the March newsletter. You will find the EVA financial statement for on a separate page of this newletter. If you have any questions concerning the financial statement, please contact me. This financial statement is also filed with the Arizona Corporation Commission each year. With the dues increase to $50.00 this year EVA financial position is good. We have $1 9, in cash and $22, in the reserve fund. All bills are paid as of this date. With proceeds from the Superstition Challenge IMAC contest and the Cactus Classic IMAC contest coming up along with more new member application we will have the financial ability to do field improvements as needed and meet any obligation in the future (read as Party time). not prorate membership dues at any time during the year. Dues are only $50.00 for an individual, $60.00 for a family ( spouse and children 1 7 or younger ) per year. Jerry Sharp is the new salesman for all EVA Tshirts, hats and logos. Paul did a great job and Jerry being twice as tall will do even a better job. You can find Jerry at the field or at any EVA event with a table full of goodies. Membership renewal is over for and our membership stands at 271 members. This includes 1 2 new member so far this year. We are in good shape.. We can expect to have over Happy flying and smooth landings, lets all enjoy a great hobby. 300 members by Dec. 31, Verlin IMPORTANT!! 6 Newsletter Featured Build Great Job Gene!!! Sparky was born in as a rubber powered model and flew very well. It has been rejuvenated over the years in various forms, small glow motors, electric and even rubber powered. I happened to get lucky at our November swap meet and picked up a laser cut kit very reasonably. With help from John Pomroy we got the wrinkles out and it flies perfectly now. I recently flew it for 25 mins and still had 51 % of the battery remaining. It flies with a 1 50 W motor, 2 Hi Tech HS 225 BB-MG servos and a 3 cell 2200 MAH battery weighing in at about 32 ounces. 7 Secretary's Report Submitted By Mike Jeffries General Membership Meeting - 2/4/1 3 It has rained recently and we are seeing some erosion at flight stations 1 and 2. No new solo pilots. Pylon races for Feb 9 are canceled. President's Report Superstition Challenge IMAC was held January 1 9th and 20th. We had 45 pilots that competed in the contest. The contest was a great success. Revenue from the contest was $2,250 and profit to the club should come in around $1,1 00. Thanks to all the club member volunteers. Thanks to Contest Director, Verlin Boeder, Chief Judge John Pomroy, Jerry Sharp for coordinating scribes and runners. Christina Jeffries and Cathy Byrne for scoring. We did get Ralph's Catering again this year however they made only $350 for Saturday. There was some expection of $500 and they are looking at the club to make up the difference. Negotiating with the owner. Looking for possible volunteers and options for food at the contest next year. George Sheppard indicated he has a food handlers license but would need some other assistance to do the work. One idea is if 3 or 4 members want to operate the food for both days as vendors. Need ideas from the membership. Primary contest sponsor was Superstition Hobbies. We had 20 total sponsors and collected around $3,600 in pilot prizes. We got a lot more spectators due to the signs out on Ironwood. One comment was made that a lot of the spectators did not know what was going on. Ideas on how to describe to the spectators what was happening was possble PA announcements. IMAC National Judging was held January 26 and 27. The second day was supposed to be field judge training at EVA but was cancelled due to the field was closed due to rain. Treasurer Report At this time we have $22,000 in reserve and $1 8,637 in cash Membership Report 258 Active Members. Secretary Report Meeting minutes from January meeting are in the February newsletter. New Business Members requested someone update the website status when the field is closed. 8 Safety Corner Submitted By Lin Andresen Hello fellow RC modelers. We are beginning the last month of Winter Visitor season and we really hate to see you all leave. Things really slow down at the field once the Winter Visitors head back to their Summer homes. I think I've said it before, but the best way for me to come up with ideas for the club safety article is to just visit the field and watch what's going on. The second best way is to just ask members what they see. For instance, I have mentioned many times in these safety articles about arming electric models in the pit area but many members continue to violate this rule. I have seen and heard about many instances of motors unexpectedly starting up causing injury (mostly to fingers) and in some cases having the airplane take off and hit a car or another person. This rule is for the protection of flyers and spectators and must not be violated. Another problem that has been brought to my attention by several members is this: some members like to fly in areas other than designated flight stations. It is against the rules to fly airplanes, helicopters, gliders, foamy airplanes, or any other flying models in the parking lot or pit areas. You are only permitted to fly them on the main field, electric flying area, or the helicopter flight area. It has also been brought to my attention that there have been several instances of multiple pilots flying from one flight station. The rule is, "One pilot per flight station." The only exception to this rule is during official Pylon Races where the competitors generally fly from one flight station. Membership rules are actually very important safety rules. In order to fly at the East Valley Aviators flying site you must, first of all, be an AMA member or a member of another approved organization with insurance. A non-member may fly at EVA no more than one time but the nonmember member must be the guest of a member in good standing, and possess an AMA card. No card-no fly. No exceptions. This year the EVA has switched to a new way of keeping track of who is flying- a member must wear his or her club membership badge while flying. If you see someone flying and not wearing a current EVA membership badge, ask them if they are a club member and remind them that they must wear it when flying. Common sense should, however, prevail. The flyer may have just misplaced or lost his card. We have to be very careful about non-members flying, especially ones without AMA insurance. All it would take to lose our field forever would be for a non-member to hurt someone, cause property damage, have a closecall with a full scale aircraft, or cause some other kind of dangerous incident. Some safety rules may seem like a hassle or non-important but they are in place for your protection, please obey them. Well, that's all for now folks. What happens now during a signal loss??
