It is made up of ten 360-watt panels. The project was put forth by the Derry Net Zero Task Force as the first step in an effort to reduce energy usage by town controlled properties across Derry. Another consideration was cost savings for the town. In response to several social media posts arguing that the project actually went over budget, Councilor Joshua Bourdon asked Director of Public Works Mike Fowler Fowler if this was true. Fowler replied by noting that at the start of the project, he anticipated that his department would need no more than $300,000 to get the job done. As they only needed a total of $282,400, Fowler argued that both his department and the vendor, Granite State Solar, stayed true to their word. It was on time, on schedule, on budget, Fowler said. To give residents an update on how much progress the system has made since May, Fowler came before the Town Council on Sept. 18 to go over some data collected on the system. According to Fowler, the project ended up costing $282,400 total but; only had a net cost of $223,588 after receiving $58,812 dollars in rebates. Overall, the system has managed to save $20,176 on electricity, while also earning Derry back $3,880 through Renewable Energy Certificates. Fowler expects a complete payback on the project within 9.3 years. Since its activation, the system has produced 59,060 kilowatts per hour (kwh), worth roughly $7,700 in electricity. The average daily production continued on page 6 Derry Conservation Commission Discusses a Number of Events ALEX GUITTARR Tasked with maintaining proper stewardship, utilization and protection of Derry s national resources, the Conservation Commission recently held their latest meeting on Sept. 24 to discuss a variety of issues. Commission Chairman James Degnan spoke about the commission s success at Derryfest earlier in the month. He noted that plenty of the trail maps that they had to on hand to distribute to attendees went quickly. Many residents had a lot of questions and feedback for the commission member s running their booth at Derryfest. In par- ticular, attendees asked about how to identify and treat invasive plants. Commission members explained the importance of removing them which involves persistence and digging deep to eliminate the source of the plant. There s still some more work to be done on educating the public on the do s and don ts about dealing with a lot of these invasive plants, Degnan noted. The Go Green Committee announced the date of their 2018 Fall Cleanup. It will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6. The cleanup will kick off at 9 a.m. at The Coffee Factory and will span an entire week, going all across Derry and cleaning up any high priority areas that require the most attention. The date of Oct. 6 was also chosen to avoid having to clean around falling leaves. Blue bags for trash cleanup can be found at the aforementioned kickoff area and at the Derry Transfer Station which is located at 43 Transfer Lane (off Fordway), Tues. thru Sat. from 6 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. It was announced that anyone using the Broadview Garden on the Broadview Farm Conservation Area must remove any materials they used during the spring and summer by Nov. 1. This includes fencing, stakes, watering cans, plastic, mulch, and so on. Londonderry ALEX GUITTARR Derry s chapter of the Salvation Army helps to serve a tremendous amount of people across Derry, and Londonderry. These services do not come cheaply. The Derry chapter will be hosting its ninth annual chili and chowder cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 13, at MacGregor Park in Derry. Their goal is not only to raise money for the Salvation Army; but to also help bring the community together for a day of fun and good food. Having been in operation since 1865, The Salvation Army assists roughly 30 million people in the United States suffering from hunger, homelessness, or requiring aid due to old age, disability or natural disaster. Derry s chapter has assisted plenty of residents since its foundation in According to Lieutenant Kathryn Mayes, a Corps Officer/Pastor for the group Some of the chapter s more prominent services include their weekly food pantry, emergency clothing for disaster victims, a back-to school program that gives returning students new backpacks with school supplies, and a summer feeding program for kids who rely on free or reduced lunches from school. We actually provide quite a few lunches each day, Mayes noted. At the cook off, there VETERINARY HOSPITAL. LLC 33 Crystal Ave., Derry, NH New Clients Welcome! In addition, access to the children s activities will also cost $5. Right around the corner is the annual Christmas bell ringing program done across the country to raise money for the Salvation Army. It was initiated by Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee in He found a way to respond to people going hungry on Christmas night in San Francisco. The tradition has become a staple of the organization and has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to assist the homeless and hungry. The Derry chapter has just begun preparations for its bell ringing this year, with more than 40 spots across Derry, and Londonderry to cover. It s never too early to apply to volunteer, and anyone interested can apply at nne.salvationarmy.org/derry or at the chapter s official Derry headquarters at 18 Folsom Road. We don t have a lot [of bell ringers] now, but we really need them, Mayes stated. The checkpoint was free, and hosted by Safe Kids New Hampshire and the Injury Prevention Center at Dartmouth, the Derry Police Department, the Buckle Up New Hampshire Coalition. Although residents can have their safety seats checked throughout the year, this drop-in event, was intended to raise awareness of the dangers of improperly installed car seats and to provide an opportunity for parents to bring their used car seats for proper disposal. Technicians at the event determined whether your car seat is still safely usable by checking its expiration date. The date is stamped onto the seat, and seats are usually good for six years. During the two-hour event, there were about 16 vehicles that ran through the four stations set up with 21 seats inspected, and 22 seats recycled by technicians for disposal. Over the morning, there were five seats given to residents to replace those expired. If you missed the event, and wish to have your seat checked for safety, contact the Derry Police department at Jeffery Pike or Erin Sullivan will be able to assist those in need of the service throughout the year. 4 Page 4 Nutfield News October 4, 2018 Whether you have the day off, or it s business as usual this Monday, chances are you re in the majority if you decide to observe the upcoming federal holiday, Columbus Day. Despite the less than favorable aspects of his history, Christopher Columbus, the 15th Century Italian explorer credited with discovering America, apparently still has some admirers. Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, is a nationally recognized holiday. President Franklin Roosevelt made Columbus Day a federal holiday in the 1930s. However, opposition to its observance has grown over time. While there is plenty to criticize about Columbus, and what followed his arrival, there are some things that are salvageable about the October observance. It s a fact that the conquest of the Americas by Europeans, which arguably starts with Columbus, was very ugly, and involved a lot of needless violence. But violence and conquest, for better or worse, is much the same for history the world over for thousands of years. History, in many ways, is the story of conquest. Though the majority of us deplore it, it is our shared heritage. While there is only limited knowledge of what pre-columbus America was like, it is inferred that many indigenous civilizations had their own versions of war, slavery, torture and brutality. It s not the intention of the observation Serving Londonderry Editorial Nutfield News is a weekly publication. Nutfield Publishing, LLC 118 Hardy Rd., Londonderry, NH tel: fax: send s to: nutfieldnews@nutpub.net Owner/Publisher Debra Paul In to make excuses for the worst that happened, but rather to understand it. Many of the atrocities that took place were not solely the essence of Columbus, but rather part of the times. With all that said, there are still good reasons to observe Columbus Day. Many Italians see Columbus Day as an opportunity to recognize what Italians have contributed to America, and to the world. It can be said that Columbus Day should be seen as a celebration of exploration. It took tremendous bravery to sail off into the unknown. One of the best parts of humanity is our drive to discover, and for that reason Columbus Day deserves recognition. More and more people have been moving towards forgoing Columbus Day in favor of Indigenous Peoples Day, to reflect and honor the Native Americans who had suffered during the time of European exploration. This version also celebrates the culture and traditions of indigenous America, and the best parts of our shared history. This year, while we celebrate Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples Day, or both, we can take this time to learn from our shared history and to move forward into a better future. Whichever side you take, it can be agreed that both sides offer something to celebrate about the human spirit. With all of this in mind, the second Monday in October is indeed a significant observance, and should be seen for what it is - a reflection of our history and a chance to learn and grow from it. Derry Fire Department Opens Doors for Fire Prevention Week On Saturday, Oct. 13 the Derry Fire Department will host their annual Fire Prevention Week Open House. The event will take place starting at 10 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m. at Derry s Central Fire Station, located near the traffic circle on Route 102. During the Open House, families can participate in a number of educational activities to make younger members aware of the importance of fire prevention, and what they can do in case of a fire. Among some of the learning exercises there will be Live Fire Extinguisher Training for all ages, Fire Apparatus Tours, a Fire Safety Trailer, Put Out the Fire Prop using a real fire hose and Live Fire Demonstrations. There will also be pictures with Sparky the Fire Dog, Visit with Smokey Bear, get Home Fire Safety Octoberfest continued from page 1 center, an eating area to enjoy the food from local vendors who had trucks set up. According to Kevin Olson, who chaired the event for the Derry Village Rotary, the idea for this event came about from a visit to a Florida Rotary Club, which he was a part of that put on their own Oktoberfest. The Derry Village Rotary regularly puts on events throughout the year to help bring the community together. Olson wanted to introduce something new and fresh to the mix, while also potentially attracting new members to the Derry Village chapter of the Rotary. Derry actually is the home of two Rotary Clubs. Youngsters will have the opportunity to learn how to use a fire extinguisher at the annual Fire Prevention Open House on Oct. 13. Tips and enjoy some free pizza and beverages which will be provided by the department. (There is also a separate Rotary Club of Derry.) Despite the challenges faced by trying to put an event like this on for the first time, Olson seemed very satisfied with the end result. There were over 600 people came by to have a great time and take in the fantastic weather. Everything s going great, Olson stated. At the beer tent, there were two official Oktoberfest beers on tap. These included Spaten Oktoberfest and Weihenstephaner Oktoberfest. There were a number of events held throughout the day, they included: a wife carrying race, a stein hoisting competition, keg tossing, and a tug-of-war to finish things off. The Wife Carrying Race was won by Corey Perssen As always children will be able to climb around inside the fire engines and dress like a fire fighter. and Amanda Brown. The Beer Stein Hoisting contest was won by Derek Szumiesz. And as for the Keg Tossing competition, Josh Farmer was the overall winner with a toss of over 27 feet, and in the 55+ arena, Don Bilodeau hurled his over 20 feet. The winners all received $50 gift certificates for their efforts. Members of the Southern New Hampshire University Boys Lacrosse Team were on hand to help with the event. Due to the success of this event, Olson absolutely plans on holding it again next year. Although the solar panels are apparently meeting and even slightly exceeding production estimates for these first four months, Fowler noted that this year s summer was unusually hot and that residents should not anticipate these results in the following years. Furthermore, He expects energy production to drop in the fall and winter months due to shorter days. He still feels that the system is still on track to meet the projected annual benchmark of 155,200 kwh. Additionally, not only will Fowler continue to give periodic reports on the system in the coming months. 9 DERRY SP Pinkerton mentor also insisted upon taking a share of the blame for not equipping his offense with the kinds of plays it could have used to help keep its squad perfect on the campaign. "It was a horrible offensive game plan by me," said O'Reilly. "One of the worst game plans by me I can remember in a long time." But there certainly didn't look like there was anything wrong with either the Astros' planning or execution during their first offensive series of the night after they received the opening kickoff. It took the locals a mere five plays to march 64 yards down the field with a drive which included a 30-yard sprint by running back Gannon Fast and culminated with an 8-yard scoring run by Fast. However, Salem laid down their template for offensive success on their first offensive series which covered 82 yards on 14 plays in a little over six minutes and came to a conclusion with a 4-yard scoring run by back Brandon Wall. Fast and Wall would end up being the biggest offensive weapons for the two teams, but Salem would chew up loads of time with run-based series' which kept the PA defense on the field and the offense watching from the sidelines. With the score knotted up at 7-7 and 2:16 left in the first half, the Astros went on the aforementioned offensive push which ended with Fast's second 8-yard scoring sprint of the night. But the 14-7 Pinkerton lead - which came into being with just 31.8 seconds to go in the half - would only stand up for 28.1 seconds as the Blue Devils took advantage of the two Pinkerton penalties and moved the ball from their own 36 down the field for a 33-yard touchdown pass connection. On the ensuing point-after kick attempt the snap hold was mishandled by Salem quarterback Kyle Poulin who gatherd the ball, rolled to his right, and threw the twopoint conversion pass to Wall standing at the front of the end zone to give the visitors the lead with which they'd win. The two teams' defenses stood up tall in the second half and refused to allow any more scoring, with the Astros never getting any closer than the Salem 31- yard line through four offensive forays during the second half. For its part, the tough and determined Pinkerton defense forced the Blue Devils to punt several times Nutfield News October 4, 2018 Page 9 RTS Pinkerton Football Dealt its First 2018 Loss by Blue Devils CHRIS PANTAZIS Too much went wrong and not quite enough went right for the Pinkerton Academy football squad to keep its 2018 season record unblemished against the visiting Salem High Blue Devils in Derry last Friday night, Sept. 28. The academy squad busted a 7-7 tie late in the second quarter with a superb offensive series which ended with the Astros grabbing a 14-7 lead and the game's momentum. But several costly Pinkerton penalties helped Salem to drive back down the field and take the lead at and the momentum with less than four seconds to go in that first half. And the score remained right there at the rest of the way in a game which was interrupted midway through the fourth quarter by a nightmarish leg injury to Salem senior standout and captain Domenic Paci which required an ambulance and emergency medical personnel. Those two key Pinkerton penalties along with a later turnover were important factors in the PA loss which moved coach Brian O'Reilly's team to 4-1 on the season. The awful, gut-wrenching injury to Salem stalwart Paci occurred with 6:03 left in the fourth quarter on what looked like just another running play. Two Pinkerton defenders stopped Paci on a 2-yard carry, and when the beefy fullback attempted to pull his right foot out from under himself it became plain to everyone within sight of him that his foot was going in a direction in which a human foot is not meant to go. Training staff and Pinkerton's team doctor got to the Salem player quickly and immediately realized that an ambulance and emergency medical personnel would be needed quickly. While being removed from the field by stretcher Paci raised his hands in the air and exhorted his teammates to keep working hard and finish off the win. And that's just what they did. The victorious and now 4-1 Blue Devils finished with 328 total offensive yards, with 255 of those coming from their running game. Wall tallied 129 of those on 23 carries. Pinkerton receiver Ryan Auger goes up for a pass during his team s intense loss to Salem in Derry last Friday night. The Blue Devils squeaked out a win in that tough contest. The Astros take aim at getting back to their winning ways this Friday night when they travel to Plaistow to take on a Timberlane Regional High team which is 1-4 but is coming off of a victory over an extremely weak Portsmouth Clippers contingent. 10 Page 10 Nutfield News October 4, 2018 Astro Golfers Close in on State Tourney With Strong Efforts CHRIS PANTAZIS The Pinkerton Academy golf squad strode confidently toward both the end of its 2018 regular season and the Division I team tournament by performing extremely well in a pair of matches last week. The Astros upped their season record to 13-4 with an excellent performance at Souhegan Woods in Amherst last Wednesday the 26th during which the locals snagged first place handily with a team score of 197. Dover finished second with a 221, and winless Merrimack was a very distant third with a team tally of 272. Pinkerton was paced by Matt MacDougall with his individual score of 37, P.J. Daniele with a 38, Jacob Tinker with a 39, Cam Leppert with his 41, and Nick Tufts with a 42. And coach Jeff Sojka's crew did more extremely impressive work on its home links at the Hoodkroft Country Club on Friday the 28th, dealing the undefeated Bedford High Bulldogs their first loss of the campaign. Pinkerton moved to 15-4 overall by scoring a 182 as a group, edging Bedford by three strokes and still-winless Merrimack (267) by a whole lot more than that. Bedford moved to 13-1 with its first downer of the campaign. Tufts (34) and Mac- Dougall (35) both shot under par on the par-36 course, and Jacob Tinker and Kyle Raspuzzi each shot a 37. Chris Walder and Zak Kahn each tallied a 39 for the victorious Astros. With that immense success in its rear-view mirror, the academy side then drove into this week looking at one final regular season match - again at Hoodkroft - against Spaulding of Rochester and Manchester Memorial's Crusaders. That contest took place on Tuesday, Oct. 2, after Nutfield News press time. Pinkerton junior golfer Nick Tufts put forth an exceptional round recently in helping his academy squad hand the previously-undefeated Bedford High Bulldogs their first loss of the 2018 campaign. The Astros closed in on the end of their regular season with a 15-4 record. Photo by Chris Paul PA Cross-Country Crews Find Successes From Different Sources CHRIS PANTAZIS Pinkerton Academy's boys' cross-country squad enjoyed a major success at home on its own course during the middle of last week. And over the weekend the Pinkerton Lady Astro harriers savored a noteworthy success on somebody else's course. The two academy teams experienced mixed fortunes at home in three-team battles on Wednesday the 26th. The Astro males absolutely pummeled Salem and Dover by finishing with a final score of 17, with Salem finishing a very distant second (53) and Dover a long-distance third (70). PA senior Joe Gagnon finished first in a time of 15 minutes and 49 seconds, and his teammate Nolan Preble placed second (16:45). The Astros also took third thanks to the efforts of Nate Steiger (16:52), fifth thanks to Zack Aham (17:04), sixth via Luke Brennan's efforts (17:08), seventh thanks to Steve Groulx (17:11), and eighth via the work of Zach Plaza (17:23). Ethan Desmarais bagged 10th place for the Astros (17:49). In the girls' race, Pinkerton gave its seniors the spotlight and finished third behind victorious Salem and Dover. The locals had Lexi Peet place 13th overall in 23:28 and Olivia Neville snag 14th (23:29). Freshmen Hailee Langill and Laura Adams ran personal bests on the course in finishing 15th and 18th respectively. Molly Repoza finished out scoring for the host Trailblazers. But coach Amy Bernard's bunch had an excellent performance over in Northwood at the Coe- Brown Northwood Academy Black Bear Invitational on Saturday the 29th. The Trailblazers finished an extremely strong fourth overall out of some 29 teams at that event, ending up as the top New Hampshire Division I squad there. It was the first time Bernard's bunch competed at the Black Bear. Pinkerton's top five finishers all crossed the line among the top 60 runners in a race which had 225 total harriers complete the course. Leading the way for PA were Meghan Cross in 11th place overall in 19:57. Ciara Aril finished 23rd (20:45), Mariesa Preble placed 24th (20:46), Molly McGaffigan was 44th (21:27), and Riley Sweeney crossed the line 58th in 21:45. The academy squads then had to make the long ride out to Rochester this past Tuesday the second of October - after Nutfield News press time - to compete in three-team meets hosted by the Spaulding High contingents. Parnell, Michels & McKay Attorneys at Law Nutfield News October 4, 2018 Page 11 Astro Boys Soccer Squad Seeks Consistency as Record Hits 7-3 CHRIS PANTAZIS As it stepped into its Monday afternoon game at Dover High School, the Pinkerton Academy boys' soccer squad was in the midst of something of a roller-coaster ride which had it bouncing between wins and losses through its most recent handful of matches. Following a fine 3-0 start to the 2018 campaign, longtime coach Kerry Boles had seen his 6-3 contingent lose, then win, then lose, then win, then lose, then win its next six matches. But the Astros rolled into Monday's road match against a 3-6 Dover contin- gent aiming to bust that somewhat frustrating cycle with a second consecutive success. Pinkerton had moved its season mark to a strong 6-3 with a 2-0 shutout of the visiting Salem High Blue Devils in Derry last Saturday, Sept. 29. Salem slipped under the.500 mark to 4-5 with the defeat. The hosts potted one goal in each half, with Hunter Rathburn netting the only goal his Astros wound wind up needing - with an assist from Nathan Polyukhovich - with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Terry Coyle was set up by Henry Andrews for a late insurance marker with five minutes to go in the match, and PA standout keeper Max Fairbank contributed some six saves to the academy squad's fifth shutout of "Salem was a formidable squad who battled all afternoon," said coach Boles. "In the end, we were able to secure the victory. Playing well were Michael Curtin, Jon Tremblay, Mac Johnson, Mike Puchacz, and Henry Andrews. This was a great turnaround from last Saturday (an emotional Mack Plaque loss to Londonderry). Having a week off and making some changes, we were unsure what to expect. But spirits were high all week and this was a great bounce-back effort. I feel like we made excellent progress in a week's time. This was a true team effort and I couldn't be more pleased with these guys." And coach Boles' bunch did in fact break the previously noted cycle of wins and losses by collecting a 3-0 shutout success over the Exeter squad in bouncing its season record up to 7-3. Will D'Amico and Michael Curtin each scored first half tallies and Rob Douglas added the third PA marker in period two. Alex Rust notched two assists and Hunter Rathburn registered one, with standout keeper Fairbank contributing six saves to the shutout effort. Academy s Field Hockey Squad Keeps Pushing half from Julia Samiotes, who was set up by teammate Abby Jowett. The 1-0 lead remained until the 26:18 mark of period two when Kate Bennett set up Samiotes for her second marker of the day. And Taylor Marchman later provided the victors with their third tally, which was unassisted. Pinkerton all-state goalie Khaliyah Ellis stopped the two shots which Salem put on her, and her teammates smacked some 10 blasts on Lady Blue Devils' keeper Alyssa Cloutier. The PA crew then strode confidently into this week looking at matches at Bedford against a winless Lady Bulldogs' contingent Veteran goalie Max Fairbank continues to be a bright light for the 2018 Pinkerton boys soccer team. 12 Page 12 Nutfield News October 4, 2018 PA Volleyball Falls to South, Gets Past Salem and Dover Leya Wang has been an absolute powerhouse for the Pinkerton Lady Astros volleyball team numerous times this fall. Photo by Chris Paul CHRIS PANTAZIS The Pinkerton Academy girls' volleyball squad continues to try to figure out just where it stands in tough Division I. And the Lady Astros experienced mixed success against two of the tougher teams last week, splitting with unbeaten Nashua South and a skilled Salem squad. The Astros saw their 2018 record slip to 6-4 with a shutout loss to the undefeated Nashua South Purple Panthers in the Gate City last Wednesday, Sept. 26. The academy side gave it their all and didn't allow the Nashuans an easy victory. But the hosts bagged indi- vidual set successes of 25-21, 26-24, and to take the match. The academy crew received 16 assists and two service aces from Ella Dandrade, 13 digs and seven service points from Reese Asselin, six kills and three blocks from Brooke Kane, six kills from Leya Wang, five kills from Lily Heywood, and three blocks from Bekah Stallings. But the Lady Astros took all the Salem High Lady Blue Devils could dish out and defeated that opponent in five, hard-fought games in Derry on the morning of Saturday the 29th. Young stalwart Wang knocked down a huge kill to hand her side a victo- ry in game five as the locals won the tough match 3-2. Salem moved to 8-3 with the loss while PA went to 7-4. The back and forth battle saw the Lady Astros win game one handily (25-13) but drop a decision in game two. The locals rebounded for a success in game three to go up 2-1, but the Lady Devils eked out a victory in game four to force the deciding fifth set. Wang notched 15 kills and Kane connected for 11. Dandrade dished out some 34 assists, Asselin collected 17 service points with four aces, Ella Koelb managed 11 service points with six aces, Amelia Graves bagged some 21 digs, and Stallings was good for five blocks. Coach Royce's roster then took aim at getting a winning skein going when it traveled to the seacoast to take on the Dover Green Wave this past Monday. And the academy crew plunged past the Wave in three straight sets with final scores of 26-24, 25-14, and Wang was a warrior again for her Lady Astros, tallying 14 digs, 10 kills, and 10 service points. Dandrade was good for 18 assists and 10 service points with five aces, Asselin collected 15 digs, Amelia Graves notched 10 service points, Emma Bernard contributed five kills, and Stallings tallied three blocks. Lady Astros Soccer Crew Keeps Showing Great Defensive Prowess CHRIS PANTAZIS The old saw stating that "the best offense is a strong defense" is a philosophy which the 2018 Pinkerton Academy girls' soccer squad can subscribe to with great comfort. The incredibly stingy Lady Astros finished last week's matches having outscored their opponents by a sterling 16-4 margin through their first nine matches and tallying an excellent record in the process. Second-year coach Danielle St. Pierre's crew edged Nashua South in a shutout and then played Salem to a scoreless draw in bumping its Division I mark to that lofty level last week. The Lady Astros rode a goal from Mattie Sullivan to a 1-0 edging of the Nashua South Lady Purple Panthers in Derry last Wednesday, Sept. 26. Sam Franks registered the assist, and PA standout goalie Reagan Kolinski made some nine saves in the shutout which made the local booters 6-2 on the campaign with four straight victories and a total of four shutouts. But there was no scoring whatsoever in the academy side's 0-0 deadlock with Salem's Lady Blue Devils in Derry last Saturday the 29th, with keeper Kolinski only having to stifle one Salem shot to claim yet another shutout. Now undefeated in its last five matches, Pinkerton then strode into this week looking at a truly huge challenge on the road at Exeter against a Lady Blue Hawks' bunch which was 7-1 overall and likewise unbeaten in its last handful of contests. And the Lady Astros were victimized by that tough opponent in a 2-0 shutout to slip to on the season. Keeper Kolinski was credited with four stops as the Pinkerton crew tried to keep pace in D-I.
