In Mrs. Pena's Social Studies classes, students tested their teamwork and critical thinking skills to ESCAPE the (class) Room. By solving six tasks, these 8th graders learned about different elements of Mexican culture. The best news is, almost every group was able to escape! READ TO SUCCEED: Out of all the classes in VMMS who participated in the Read to Succeed Contest, Mrs. Nolasco's homeroom C3 earned the most points per student! 2 VMMS Lead & Seed kicked off Red Ribbon Week Life is Your Journey Travel Drug Free by having students fill the hallways with a brick path noting what their Anti-Drug is: sports, family and hanging out with friends were some of the top anti-drugs. There was also a poster contest and the winners earned a Philly pretzel party. Congratulations to the winning homerooms: 6 th grade Mrs. Santoleri, 7 th grade Mrs. Kennedy and 8 th grade Mrs. Sammarco. We would also like to acknowledge the runner ups: Mrs. Essner, Mrs. O Shea, Mrs. Bauer, Mrs. DeRosa, Ms. Hayes and Mrs. Pena s homerooms. HATS FOR HUNGER: The students and staff of VMMS took part in Hats for Hunger. Students and staff were asked to bring in non-perishable food items in exchange for the privilege of wearing a hat during the school day. All of the food collected was used to create baskets for families in need in our community. A huge thank you to everyone who donated. VOICES was once again successful this year and helping our homeless families stay warm this Winter!! The Progressive Assistance to Transition from Homelessness (PATH) program held a Winter coat and sock drive on Thursday, November 15th, and with the help all of your wonderful giving we were able to contribute. Let's give these girls a round of applause for modeling your fine examples in putting others first. Thank you ladies!! 3 On November 13 th, sixth grade EXCEL students went on a tour of the Ocean County Courthouse. During their visit to the courthouse, the EXCEL students performed a mock trial in one of the criminal courtrooms. The EXCEL students will use the knowledge they gained from this first hand learning experience to enter the annual New Jersey State Bar Foundation s Law Fair contest. Drew Iacullo Wins the National Geographic Bee!!! Over 40 students competed in the school wide finals for the National Geographic Bee at VMMS. Students answered a variety of challenging geography questions. For example, in the category Weird but True, students were asked the following question: Before Phoenix became an official city, it was Pumpkinville. It s weird but it s true! Phoenix is the largest city in which southwestern state? The students showed off their impressive geography skills throughout the Geobee. This year 8 th grader, Drew Iacullo of Mrs. Kuster s social studies classes won 1 st place. Sixth grader, Jude Smith of Mrs. Essner s social studies classes took second place. Eighth grader, Nico Ghione of Mr. Cintron s social studies classes and sixth grader, Luke Steinert of Mrs. Essner s social studies classes tied for third place. Thanks to our very generous VMMS PTA, Drew and Jude both received an AMC gift card to the movies. Also, all participants received a treat and a pencil. Finally, a big thank you to the social studies teachers of VMMS for supporting the bee and sending homeroom representatives. Now we wait to see if Drew will qualify for the State finals. All of VMMS wishes him good luck!

4 COSMIC JOURNEY AT OCC: Mrs. Rizzolo's class recently went on a "Cosmic Journey" at Ocean County College's Robert J. Novins Planetarium. The class had a chance to see awesome pictures of stars, planets, galaxies and nebulae throughout our universe. The program ended with "Laser Holidays", a laser light spectacular sent to the music of popular holiday songs. 5 WINTER SEASON IS HERE! With the winter season here, colds, coughs and runny noses also are among us. Often times we are told not contagious, or treat the symptoms. This means that students may need to bring some: *medication to school to help them get through the day comfortably. If your child needs medication or cough drops at school, please remember it must come in the original container, with a note from the doctor, with the exact time to give, the exact dosage and is signed and dated by the doctor OR there is a form on the school website in the digital backpack KAbMEyT-Ui6KbIhMQR3K8QIIMwc that must be filled out for any medication given. *Flavored chapstick makes a great stocking stuffer for your children. Keeping one in their desk will prevent your child from missing class time to run to the office for lip care. *Sharing caps, hats or hooded items can aide in the spread of head lice. Remind your child not to share any items that go near the hair. Girls with long hair should wear it pulled back or up and secured while at school. Head lice are less commonly spread through contact with an infested person s personal items, such as hair brushes and combs, hats, unwashed clothing, bedding or towels. Head lice are commonly spread within households. Head lice are certainly a nuisance, but they are not generally considered a health hazard. There are a number of effective treatments for head lice. Treatment for head lice usually consists of shampooing the hair with a medicated shampoo. Consult with your pediatrician for treatment of head lice. ***If your child has outgrown sweatpants or other comfortable clothing that you would like to donate, please consider sending them to the school. Extra clothes come in handy when students have a clothing malfunction in school. 7 8 th grade Consumer Science and STEM students along with Mrs. Dunne and Mrs. Byrne joined forces for this amazing project. STEM students designed their own unique cookie cutters using Tinker Cad which they then printed on the 3D Makerbot Mini Replicator. They also created Google Slide presentations to educate their peers on the applications of 3D printing. Meanwhile, Consumer Science students taught the STEM students how to make cookie dough and how to make, decorate and market some truly fabulous treats! Way to go 34 YEARS MUSTANG SUCCESS ASSEMBLIES: 1 st Marking Period Award Assemblies were held in December to recognize students in the following categories: Honor Roll, Distinguished Honor Roll, Perfect Homework, Student Effort, Perfect Attendance, Encore and Physical Education. In addition every homeroom received a Bully-Free Zone certificate and 6 th Grade won for best overall student attendance. The following homerooms won an award for best attendance: 6 th Grade, Mrs. Santoleri, 7 th Grade, Mrs. DeRosa and 8 th Grade, Mrs. Schaeffer. Mr. Barth s class won an award for Most Perfect Attendance. Congratulations to all of VMMS Mustang Success Students!
