Please address all correspondence to the editor. dougmakin@msn.com President's Message Get Ready for the Annual Show Our biggest event of the year is upon us, the annual HFR AACA Annual Show, now in its 53rd year. This will be the 3rd year we've had it in downtown Fredericksburg and the second year that it has been in the heart of the downtown on Caroline Street. Last year was a tremendous success with approximately 200 high quality antique show cars and hundreds of spectators. We are building one of the region's preeminent antique automobile events. To sustain and grow on our success, we need everyone to step up and help out. Since this is only our second year on the Caroline Street, we're still figuring things out, and that means even more work. Along the show streets there are many open intersections that require guards to regulate traffic, pedestrians, and access of show cars to and from the field. The city streets require a lot more attention and volunteers to park show cars than it does for a parking lot or a grass field. Since our show has nearly doubled in size, this means more show cars to judge, but only the same amount a time to get the judging done. Exiting the show field is also more complicated in our new venue, so we need extra help directing people out of the show area at the end of the day. We need volunteers for all these and many other positions. If you haven't already signed up with the show chairman J. Brown for a job, please do. But the most important thing for you to is to get your car registered and to the event on show day. If you can manage to bring more than one car, that is even better. We strongly encourage you to pre-register. This saves you money, and makes planning the show a whole lot easier for us. Talk up the event with your friends from other clubs who have originalcondition antique automobiles. Let them know all the other things that downtown Fredericksburg has to offer that day, besides the great car show. Let's hope for perfect weather once again this year. AACA are held at 7:30 PM on the third Tuesday of each month except December at the Dorothy Hart Community Center, 408 Canal Street in Fredericksburg. All members will be notified of any changes. Sign-up for Refreshments If you would like to contribute drinks or desert for an up coming HFR AACA meeting, please sign up for one of the open spots on the sign-up sheet at our monthly meeting. We would like to thank the following members for providing refreshments. May June July Operation Support Seth Thanks to the generosity of you, the members of the Historic Fredericksburg Region AACA, we have continued our mission to send Seth Brown care packages. I collect miscellaneous items, snacks and/or money at each monthly meeting. I use the money to purchase additional items to fill the boxes and for postage ($12.00 per box). I normally send a variety of individually wrapped snacks cookies, crackers, granola bars, gum, trail mix etc. We are not allowed to send any perishable food items or anything that might melt. Seth and his teammates enjoy receiving the boxes. Seth makes certain that everyone gets to share in the excitement of opening the box and sharing the contents. They often barter and bargain for their favorite items. If nothing else it is a bright spot in their day when they can smile and think of home. Thank you again for your continued support of this project. John Garnett returned the Best of Show Trophy that he won last year. The trophy went to this years winner and John was given a Best of Show Plaque that he can now hang in the horse barn.

5 THE MAGNETO Page 5 Members Provide 40 s Era Cars for USO Dance at Chancellor Middle School by Jason Javaras The students at Chancellor Middle School held their annual USO dance on April 30th. They wear 1940 s era costumes and seemed to really appreciate our clubs participation. They even gave us framed certificates for our trouble. Attending were Laura and Jimmy Lowe with their 47 Plymouth, Tommy Gatewood and his son Bill with their 1940 Chevrolet and myself with my 40 Ford. We got a kick out of talking to the kids and they enjoyed our cars nice trade. 6 THE MAGNETO Page 6 Historic Fredericksburg Region, AACA April Monthly Meeting Minutes April 20, 2010 The president called the meeting to order at approximately 7:35 p.m. The roll was called. Forty members were present. A motion was made, seconded and passed to approve the March 2010 minutes. Wayne DuBois presented the treasurer s report. A motion was made, seconded and passed to pay the bills presented: Copy Center Plus (printing newsletter); Spotsylvania County (printing 2010 car show poster); and Connie Brown (postage for mailing car show related correspondence). Committee Reports: Membership: Lauman Schooler reminded members once again that 2010 dues are now past due. He also encouraged everyone to seek out prospective new members. Cards & Flowers: No report. Legislative: No report. Magneto: Doug Makin is now back on-line, his computer having been repaired. He requested that members contribute articles, pictures, etc., for inclusion in the newsletter. His address is dougmakin@msn.com. Website: No report. Social: DUE TO THE RESIGNATION OF FRANCES SCHOOLER, WE NEED A VOLUNTEER TO ACT AS SOCIAL COMMITTEE CHAIR. In the meantime, Frances has contacted the Fredericksburg Country Club regarding our December 2010 Christmas luncheon. We can get on their calendar for the first Sunday in December. The cost for the room has gone up $10; cost for the meal remains the same Car Meet: Lauman Schooler handed out forms for car show sponsorships and encouraged members to help with this effort. J. Gordon Brown reported that the color show flyer is ready for distribution. A mailing to last year s registrants and sister club presidents has already gone out. Members are encouraged to distribute flyers at events they attend. The color poster is finished and was available for members to take with them for distribution. (Thanks to Wally Hunt for arranging discounted printing of the flyer and poster through the Spotsylvania County Voc-Tech. They look great!) J. had received the club s approval letter from the city. The insurance certificate was received. As of today there are 30 show registrants. Powell Sale and Ron Rees have volunteered to be responsible for picking up the barricades from the city yard on Friday, 6/4; putting them up early on the morning of Saturday, 6/5; and returning them to the city yard. Once they are returned our deposit will be refunded. No Parking signs will have to go up early Friday morning, 6/4. Please let J. know if you can help. The Bull Run chapter is planning to caravan to the show. Until 5/1, a block of rooms is being held at the new downtown Marriott for those coming into town on Friday night. An went to members of the Downtown Retail Merchants encouraging their participation in the day s events and providing them with ideas to bring in customers. There have been only a few responses. Based on a suggestion from Wayne DuBois and discussions during meetings of the meet committee, there may be a change in procedure for getting show cars into their parking spots and trying to eliminate a traffic back-up at the show entrance. One way club members can help with this is to PRE-REGISTER YOUR CAR FOR THE SHOW. The more cars we have pre-registered, the better we can plan for parking. A sign-up sheet was passed around so members could sign up for a job on the day of the show. CLUB MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE: YOUR HELP IS NEEDED. The registration deadline for judged cars was April 15; however, you can still register but not have your car judged. Club members are encouraged to attend. Those planning to attend for just Saturday will meet at the Hardee s at Four-Mile Fork at 7:15 a.m. to caravan to Petersburg. New Business: Chancellor Middle School s USO Dance will be held Friday, 4/30/10.
