1 TIRE TRACKS THE ELECTRONIC VERSION Notes from your editor: May was a busy month for our Region and as a result I have too many pictures and so little space. Thanks to Mel Redmond for providing the photos from the Waynesboro Motorsports Show. I regret that I didn t get more scenic shots of the Region Spring Driving Tour but we were focused on following the route instructions instead of stopping to enjoy the scenery. I can tell you that we saw parts of Virginia that I ve never seen and some of the views were spectacular! If all of our tour routes for the 2012 Sentimental Tour even come close to matching this one, then our visitors will leave the valley with great memories (and some good photos). On Page 6 of this issue we tell you how you can become involved in the Sentimental Tour. Now is the time to get involved and join our team. The month of May got us off to a flying start on the car show season, and W-S Region AACA members were right in the thick of it. May 1 st marked the Piedmont Region s 37 th Annual Car Show in Charlottesville. Club participants included Susan & Robbie Gray, Nelson Driver, Billy Melton (Barbara was there too!) Jim & Scott Gregory, Dick McIninch, Stu Allen and myself. There were a couple of the predicted light rain showers during the day, but nothing serious. The Piedmont Region did their usual excellent job hosting this event. Three W-S Region cars were presented trophies. Information on the winners is elsewhere in this edition of Tire Tracks, and on our website waynesboro-staunton/. The 58 th ODMA Meet was held May 5-7 hosted by the Lynchburg Region AACA. Club members attending included Mike & Sharon Embres, Ken & Shirley Farley, Scott & Jim Gregory, Susan Gray, Stu Allen, Dick McIninch, Nelson Driver, Paul Wampler and myself. The weather in the Hill City was gorgeous, partly sunny and breezy with comfortable temperatures all day long. Information on vehicle awards is elsewhere in this issue. On May 14 th Waynesboro Downtown Development Inc. held its now renamed Waynesboro Main Street Motor Sports Show. The former Muscle Car Show has broadened its appeal to a wider variety vehicles. A total of 15 trophies (10 for cars/trucks and 5 for motorcycles) were awarded based on participant s voting. The variety of cars, trucks and motorcycles was impressive. W-S members on-hand included Rick Downs (31 Model A), Jack Drago (70 Plymouth AAR Cuda), Susan & Robbie Gray (32 Dodge Street Rod), Scott Gregory (67 Chevrolet Impala), Jim Gregory (26 Hupmobile), Paul Wampler (68 Toyota), Nelson Driver (31 Willys-Knight), Sam Simpson (65 Ford Falcon), Owen Harner (40 Ford), Mel Redmond (49 Divco Milk Truck) and myself (51 Studebaker). Also parked with our group was Bob Knecht (31 Model A), President of the Skyline Chapter of the Model A Club. The weather, although threatening, held off, and all enjoyed a good time. Several members took home nice door prizes, while Jack Drago s 70 Barracuda and my 51 Studebaker Champion were awarded trophies. The club was presented a plaque in recognition of our efforts in supporting the show. Finally, our May 15 th meeting featured the W-S Region s annual spring driving tour. Armed with instruction sheets, Ronnie & Janice Shanholtzer s red 70 Buick Electra 225 convertible was the first to depart, with the rest of us following at 5 minute intervals. Despite a few initial spring showers, the tour was great. By the time we reached the Blue Ridge Parkway the sun broke through and the rest of the day was spent enjoying spectacular scenery. We had our picnic on the BRP, and our business meeting at Glen Maury Park overlooking Buena Vista. We were using one of the routes put together by Robbie Gray, Nelson Driver and Doug Hackney for the upcoming Sentimental Tour in They did an excellent job. At the conclusion each driver/navigator team turned back in their driving instruction sheet with comments on improving the directions. The day ended with an ice cream stop at the DQ in Stuarts Draft. So, if you love to drive and display your old car, May was a great month to do so. And there s more on the way for June & July! Ann and I will miss seeing everyone in June, as we will be taking the Bulletnose to a car show we attend each year in Ohio. VP, Jack Drago will be conducting the June board and business meetings. In between were Scott Gregory's 67 Impala, Mel Redmond's 49 Divco Milk Truck, Paul Wampler's 68 Toyota, Nelson Driver's 31 Willys-Knight, Rick Downs' 31 Model A, Bob Knecht's (Model A Club) 31 Model A, Jack Drago's 70 'Cuda, Jim Gregory's 26 Hupmobile, and Susan & Robbie Gray's 32 Dodge Street Rod. Not pictured in the line-up is Owen Harner's 40 Ford which was positioned on the opposite side of the street. Our President and V.P. with their trophies W-S Region Spring Driving Tour Our Spring Driving Tour was a dry-run for Day 2 of the 2012 Sentimental Tour. A few sprinkles didn t deter us from enjoying the scenery or the picnic lunch at a Ranger Station on the Blue Ridge Parkway. What a great day with our old cars!

This was after the 20 members had left the Target parking lot in Waynesboro at 1:30 pm on their car tour. They had their picnic lunches at the Whetstone Ranger Station on the Blue Ridge Parkway. President Bob Ridle opened the meeting with a few brief remarks. He gave the Treasurer s report and sunshine report including the fact that John Stone was home from RMH. Bob read a thank you card from the Brown family. He announced activities would be in The Tire Tracks and on the web site local.aaca.org/waynesborostaunton/, so please consult them for time and date. It is hard to believe that we have only 12 more months to get everything in place to host a National AACA tour. Robbie and Susan Gray, Nelson Driver and Doug Hackney have been focusing on the Tues. tour to Buena Vista and the Thurs. tour to Lexington. Billy Melton is working the Mon. tour to Albemarle county while Larry Huffman and the Tri-County folks are working on the Weds. tour to Rockingham county. On Friday we will be in Staunton and Stu Allen has the lead on that day. Ken & Shirley Farley have the hotel arrangements set up and Doris Stone has been working on details for the registration process. Shirley Wampler with help from Doris has been refining our budget as plans get firmed up. Bob Ridle has got our website ready to help our publicity and has started planning for the tour books. Larry Huffman has agreed to do our daily newspaper The Sentimental Star. This is just the core team and we ll have lots of opportunities for all of our members to become involved. Now we need your help! We need a volunteer to set up our lunch stop in Buena Vista for Tues. June 5, That includes selecting a lunch site and arranging for a caterer. We have some potential ideas but we need one of our members to do the legwork and make the necessary arrangements. This is only one of many such tasks that we will be asking you to help with in the coming months. Please call me if you can help on this task or others we ll outline in the future.
