1 From the Driver s Seat I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the many cards, good wishes, and prayers that you sent my way back in April. Boy, you never know what s next in this life! Fortunately, I seem to have come through my surgery pretty well and I m on the mend although I may have some additional surgery in the near future. But in that regard, I think I m just joining the crowd. I know that Ed Riedel is having some surgical work done next week, Doris Hodgson has been under the weather, and others as well. Maybe we need a sunshine fund! I hope you ve been able to get out to some shows this spring. I missed doing that and this is the latest that I ve been able to get my Studebakers ready for the season finally got both of them on the road yesterday and plan to do some cruise ins and shows, of which there are many. Next Saturday, June 16, Selbyville is having their 61st annual Old Timers Day car and truck show. On July 14, A visit to member Artie Sedmont s Brenford Auto Museum in Smyrna is scheduled. I ve never seen his collection and I m looking forward to it. Artie would like us to show up in the afternoon, tour his collection, then feed us burgers and dogs. Sounds like a great day! In This Issue May-June 2018 From The Driver s Seat Picnic Reminder Meeting Minutes Tidbits Spring Tour 28th Orphan Car Tour Events of Interest Kenny Marvel Featured Meeting Dates Notice Mark Your Calendar Contacts & Birthdates Featured Reminders About two weeks after that is the First State Meet car show at the Veterans Home in Milford. This show was originally scheduled for May but was rescheduled for July 28. We would like to see a good turnout of Studebakers for this show and would like to enter as a group so we can be parked together. And don t forget the picnic at Cheryl Cline s in Harrington on August 18. Cheryl has also invited other area SDC chapters to come so it should be a good turnout. In addition to these events, there are many, many more. You can find out what they are by clicking on Frank Philippi Page 1

3 SPRING TOUR NOTORIOUS SPEED AND CUSTOMS, GOLDSBORO, MD Ed Riedel s 1940 Studebaker Champion Frank Philippi s 1962 Studebaker GT Hawk That s Kenny Marvel walking past! Dan Lee s 1953 Ford F100 Del Rods member & friend The group beat out the weather just barely in time to enjoy some real gearhead time and a wonderfully hospitable luncheon provided by Cory Benfield s dad, Dave. Real Tennessee Smoked BBQ & Homemade Sauces! Not to mention, the real Tennessee hospitality shown by the entire family present! The weather did prevent us continuing our tour up to Massey Aerodrome that afternoon as we all hightailed it for home. (Ed and Frank are still drying out!) Hopefully, we can include that location on another excursion the museum hosts fly-ins in conjunction with small antique car shows. Below are photos of the group and the shop which specializes in fabrication of race vehicles and repairs and modifications to a wide variety of vehicles. The pictures show a 1957 Ford Fairlane in the process of getting a full restoration, a 1974 Corvette getting a full dash modernization, a 1956 tube frame Powerhawk headed for competition out West, a 1953 C Coupe (red) which is being slightly modernized and serves as the shops mule for Studebaker product development. Soon to be available in kit form: Wilwood disc brakes using stock spindle, four corner coil-over, intake manifold for 2 and 4 barrel carburetors and headers setup. The first picture left includes l/r: Dan Lee, Ken Smolecki, Ed Riedel, Cory Benfield, Dick Archi and Frank Philippi. Center photo is Kenny Marvel, Dan Lee and Dick Archi. Right photo shows Frank Philippi (l) and Dick Archi (r) who were the chief engineers for our outing at the Shop with Kenny Marvel between them. Thank you, guys! Escaping my camera and traveling all the way from Street, MD, was Bob Kuehne. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to meet another member. Hope we made your trip worthwhile, Bob! Wives bravely attending the tour included Ed s wife, Sandy, and Ken s wife, Laurel. Thanks, ladies, for keeping me company and sharing girl talk! 4 28th ANNUAL (almost) ORPHAN CAR TOUR After a one year hiatus, the Orphan Car Tour was on again this year. What is an orphan car? Simply, it s a car brand that s no longer manufactured, such as Packard, Nash, Hudson, Rambler, Plymouth, and of course, Studebaker! I ve been on the tour which is usually held the first Saturday in June several times in the past, dating back to before I moved to the Eastern Shore. Basically, it s a driving tour over back roads. Drivers and navigators, which are definitely needed, meet at the starting point and receive printed directions so they can take the tour at their own speed, visiting various points of interest along the route. This year s tour was planned along the scenic roads of Maryland s Baltimore and Harford counties, passing through horse farms and estates, villages and pastures, ending with a late afternoon dinner at a country restaurant. and sometimes my wife Gail goes. I was really looking forward to going on the tour this year, but my surgical setback got in the way of that, and I didn t have either of my cars ready for the long drive over to the starting point, much less the tour itself. Since I had done the driving last time in my GT Hawk, this year we switched roles and Larry would drive his 67 Rambler Rogue (343 and 4 speed) while I would navigate. It took me close to 3 hours to get to the starting point, a country church, so I was happy not to be driving. We looked at the other cars on the tour, I snapped some photos, we got our directions, and off we went. I didn t count the cars by make but it seemed like Studebakers outnumbered the other makes. Folks, the countryside we went through is really quite beautiful rolling hills, big horse farms, small villages, and the like. I understood why the tour was billed as How the other half lives! We re supposed to play a game where we look for various clues along the way for the chance to win some typical goody bag stuff at the dinner. We didn t do that because Larry drives too fast for me to look for the clues. We finished two hours early. But it was a good time and a great day and I hope to do it again next year. It s nice to see the old cars out on the road and on roads where they can be driven for enjoyment. Frank Philippi Other Events of Interest There are many Cruise Ins being held on the Delmarva Peninsula to which our members could meet up to DISPLAY YOUR STUDEBAKERS. Every Tuesday from 5pm = Meding s Seafood, 3697 Bay Road, Milford Every Tuesday from 6-9pm = Dairy Queen of Millsboro, 129 Main Street 4th Thursday of month from 4-8pm = TGIF, Coastal Hwy, Unit 1, Rehoboth Beach (buy 1 dinner get 1 free to participants of cruise in + awards/gift cards) 1st & 3rd Monday of month from 5-7pm = Southern DE Street Rod Association at Rudy s Family Restaurant, S. DuPont Hwy, Harrington Page 4
5 Member Feature: Kenny Marvel The Delmarva Peninsula Chapter of the SDC was founded in 2006 by a group of like-minded Studebaker fans. Among the founding membership was Kenny Marvel. He had become good friends with Mark Henning who had called him Frank Philippi, Secretary; Fred Henning, Treasurer; Kendall Marvel, Chapter Historian; Sandra-Dee Henning, Membership Director. Kenny lives in Dagsboro, DE, where he operates his business, Marvel s Portable Welding. As a teenager, he was treated to a ride in a 1956 Hawk with a Packard 352cu engine and it was the fastest he had ever been at an impressionable age, that was it for the future of his interests in Studebaker! Besides working with metal, Kenny has restored a few Studebakers in his time but he thinks those days may be in the past. He travelled to New Hampshire for his first restoration project and then to York, PA, for his pickup truck (pictured above). Below are a few pictures of the It was originally owned by former member Ed Ellis who had a bit of bad luck in the restoration process. But it was brought back to life and won Page 5
