There was a good turnout of mostly AACA qualified cars with just a few modified and modern cars. St Joseph s Villa was a really nice venue for the show. The trip was an easy drive down Route 1 then a right turn off Brook Rd. onto a big open grassy field full of cars. There were plenty of vendors on the beautiful campus and a lot of things to see. Four entries from our region won a trophy, even me with my old truck. The show also featured a parade of mopar vehicles, and our one and only treasurer, Mark Irving, drove his Superbird. The show, put on by the Stafford Car Club (not an AACA region), includes any type of car. It was a good event. The Heritage Festival drew a large crowd of folks as well as vendors. There were numerous activities, and one of our members, Andy Gotchel, participated in the 3K race. We made a good showing at the festival and did our best to recruit some new members for our club. Our little group generated a lot of interest. Wally Hunt brought the club banner, and we gave out literature and applications. In addition to being a good outing, I can see us doing this fun activity every year and using it as an additional way of getting the name of our organization out to the public. Since my Dodge is getting a lot of work done on it and will be out of use until at least next year, I have been doing a lot with my truck. In September the truck will be taking me on our regular trip to the Taste of the Mountains Festival in Madison. And since the truck has won two times at regional meets so far this year, I will try to extend

Waiting on final accounting and bill from radio station. Radio music was not well heard on the field, but we were getting generous live coverage on the field from Bill Adler. Committee reports: Sunshine Rena had nothing to report Legislative nothing Magneto apologizes for unflattering individual photos. This is a big issue this month, with lots of photos and a list of winners from the meet. Website no updates this month Membership got contact info from 7 potential new members at the meet. Invited them to attend this evening, none here tonight, but we ll see. We ve been invited to come to the Heritage Festival on July 4 in downtown. Doug encourages official club participation. Participation list going around. Activities: First Sunday of December is planned for the HFRAACA Christmas Party. Emily no report on historic marker Car Show Report: J reports that extra 60 th anniversary stickers available if anyone wants one. 178 registered cars, 6 no shows as best we know. No complaints received. One of our highest turnouts, if not the highest. Add hometowns to registered cars so people know where cars came from. Need to update flyers and info to get people s addresses. We ve been asked about providing military discounts at the show. We ve been asked what we do with our money? J was very happy and honored to get the largest trophy he s even seen in recognition of his service as meet chairman. Venable mentioned that the person staffing trailer parking needs to have contact numbers of other members to reach people on the field if there is an issue. Also, when they come in with a trailer, get their phone number for contact if there is an issue. Some issues with restaurants wanting to make deliveries on Caroline. Bicycles violating the street closures are also an issue. The Richmond AACA is paying us the high compliment of emulating some of our meet activities. Over 100 children participated in the children s activities. We forgot to hold the scavenger hunt as scheduled. Doug
4 J U L Y Page 4 Doug suggested changing the form from year make body to year make model to more easily ID vehicles on the field. Richmond AACA is featuring Mopar this year, offering a special display and waived entry fees. Old Business state cooperation commission has received out update with a new officer roster. Corporation fee paid New Business Doug brought up Lloyd Scott. As a founding member, he is exempt from paying dues. Mayo brought up the USO dance. Fredericksburg Area Museum and HFFI brought up the 100 anniv of WW1 and 75 th of WWII, they would love to hold another USO dance at the original USO building. Date will be the Saturday in April near the high school USO dance. She s provided those agencies our contact information to provide appropriate vehicles for the show. They are considering making it an annual event. Wally mentioned that the beach bash we usually attend is around the same time. Wally hopes that the two events don t conflict. 50/50 Raffle: $8 for winner. Won by Ken donated back to club Invocation.

10 Mercedes Benz Assembly Plant/Tour About one hour southwest of Birmingham, AL, in a remote and rural area known as Vance, sits Mercedes Benz only U.S. car assembly plant. There, sprawling across 1,000 acres with nothing else in sight other than interstate 20/59 and Alabama forests, 4,000 employees working three 8-hour shifts assemble Mercedes Benz SUVs and C Class cars on two separate assembly lines. The work is facilitated by 1,750 robots in three general categories - materials and handling, measuring, and welding. Tours of the plant show portions of each of these three robotics, as well as portions of the vehicle assembly process. The tours are walking and last about one hour. For about the first half of the walk, there is a series of generalities that are discussed relative to the plant that are informative, but, compared with other plant tours, provide little in the way of seeing much assembly and even fewer workers. At the end of this part, the tour retraces the steps to return to a point where more of the assembly process is shown in an adjoining section of the plant. This part is better. Still walking on the tour, pre-built engines and transmissions, already joined, can be observed hanging from the lower level of the assembly line; workers can be observed installing trim garnishes and mouldings on the car doors a process that allows 99 seconds; and the chassis-to-body marriage is shown a manual process that involves four employees with one at each suspension-steering knuckle. The assembly of the new vehicles, from start to finish, takes about three days. Ten hours of the three days are spent in the paint process. New parts continuously stream into the plant in large tractor trailers. Only the parts needed for several hours of assembly are at the plant at any time. The engines come from Germany they are not made at the plant. And, a parts servicing warehouse is across the interstate from the plant, unobservable unless one drives a side road through a forested area to spot it. And, trucks can be seen streaming to and from the warehouse as well as flowing in and out of the plant from interstate 20/59. After the tour, attendees are invited to walk through the 30,000 square foot Mercedes Benz Museum. The world s first motor cycle, first motorized carriage, and first motorized car are in the museum, along with other cars of historical note. A few other points are of interest if one is considering the tour. The tours are pre-scheduled months in advance with pre-appointed times. But, it was challenging to get booked. Repeated phone calls always went to the same recorded line, with no response. It took many days before human contact resulted. And, after all the time and effort, at the very moment on the day the actual tour was to commence, the scheduled time was ignored and the tour group was pushed back and delayed in an arbitrary decision poorly communicated that allowed others with a later tour to preempt not the message to send to loyal customers, for sure, and especially not after all the significant effort to get scheduled. This did not go over well with the tour group to say the least. So, heads-up on the scheduling. Also, there is a tour fee many other plants do not charge. And, there is a gift shop, but hold onto your wallet. Finally, of historical note, the first car rolled off the assembly line February 14, So, the plant recently celebrated its 20 th anniversary. And, of a quantitative note, the tour guide mentioned that the cost of a worker pulling the dedicated rope that stops the assembly line to address an important issue equates to $24,000 per minute. Do the revenue math on that.
