2 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 2 Welcome Corvette Limited Members, please bear with me while I get my Presidential Legs. This year has started off with an amazing Installation and Awards Banquet, it was exciting to have my car win the best C7. Congratulations to all of the winners of awards for cars and events. Our car judge Matt Hinson is planning to have several car shows this year, so we will have the opportunity to meet and perhaps incorporate an outing to enjoy while our cars are being judged. Talk to Matt and/or Bob Petersen with your ideas. Don t forget our meeting is on the first day of the month in February where you will have the opportunity to sign up for the Super Bowl Football Pools especially if you are unable to attend the great potluck Super Bowl Party at Doug and Linda Mitt s home on Sunday, February 5. Each month we have a social dinner, where members meet at a restaurant, and we get the opportunity to visit and enjoy getting to know each other. Don Meyers has offered to head up the Social Dinners again this year. I want to thank all the members who stepped up and sponsored these dinners in the last year. See Don, or myself if you have a place the club would enjoy. 3 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 3 Membership ~ News & Views Joe Garr As always time flies when you are having fun. It s February already. January went by fast, but we still managed to enjoy a few club events. Debbie and I stayed home this year and did not make it to the Drive Down Colorado Blvd. The Rose Parade was terrific as was the bowl game especially if you are a fan of USC. There was an Air Show at Cable Airport in Upland on January 14 & 15th. It was great show with around sixty cars for their Car Show. Cal Rods, and Road Kings were some of the participates, and I m thinking this could be a great event for our club to attend next year. I m watching the Inauguration today, and the peaceful transfer of power makes me so proud and lucky to be an American. It s not about politics but more about our system that has done this every four years for more than two hundred years. I think ALL Americans can applaud this. There were some protest (mostly peaceful), which is an American tradition and I know about protest. I had two uncles who were lifers in the Marine Corps, so that was my choice after high school. I joined the Marines from 1961 to I think most of us are old enough to remember the protest against the VIETNAM WAR. Continued on page 4

4 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 4 Debbie and I very much enjoyed the wonderful Banquet that our 2016 V. P. Dave Thompson arranged. Thank you Dave it could not have been better. The venue was terrific, the food was great, and what about the music provided by our own Jack Rallo and Steve Copell. I think everyone could see I was having a good time. Congratulations to all the raffle prize winners as well as all the other deserving winners of the evening. Car of the year went to Steve Working for his beautiful 2016 C7.R. Kim has put up some great pictures of the Banquet on our Web Site. Thank you Kim Hinson for the great job you are doing with the Web Site. Debbie and I have signed up for the Gambler s Classic in April. Corvettes of Bakersfield always put on a good show and I hope our club is well represented. We could use a Leader for that run (any volunteers?). 5 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 5 Awards and Installation Banquet by Dorothy McCain What a special night Saturday, January 21, 2017 was!! Dave Thompson planned and executed a truly wonderful Awards and Installation Banquet. THANK YOU DAVE, for a wonderful evening. Thanks also to Flo who helped Dave meet and greet at the door, and Kim and Rosemary who came early and helped Dave and Flo decorate and put out balloons. The food was excellent, and was some of the best presentation I ve seen in a while. I m not a real fish person, but Mary let me taste her sea bass and it was delicious, the salad was presented in a standing circle of thin cucumber, and the three desserts were so good! I think my favorite was the expresso mousse cup. We were entertained by Fusion a band with Steve Copell and Jack Rallo as members. CAN T TELL YOU HOW GOOD THEY WERE, Extra entertainment included a special command performance by Ralph V. and Randy S, which started the evening off right. The dancing went on throughout the evening. Fusion even got some line dancing going! This year we were able to get rooms at the hotel and stay overnight. I was tired and it was really nice to just go up the elevator and relax. My room had a balcony and a lovely view. Can t think of how the event could have been nicer. I had the honor to give the Lifetime Membership pins to two of my favorite people. Congratulations to Wes and Libby Berry for 5 years of continuous membership in Corvettes Limited. That is quite an accomplishment. CONGRATULATIONS TO: Member of the year: Leif Hagman. 6 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 6 Dorothy continued I ll see everyone at the Super Bowl Party on February 5, at Doug and Linda s for an exciting time. Always fun with plenty of TV s so you won t miss any of the action. I know that one of the goals of this year s Board is to increase membership. I keep a small folder behind my seat with past copies of our great newsletter. If I see a Corvette in a parking lot, I can hand the newsletter to the owner or leave it under the windshield. We have gotten a couple of members this way. Let s all keep our eyes out for potential new members. Dorothy MISSISSIPPI RIVER CRUISE 2018? After the Columbia River Cruise last October, several members were interested in another river cruise - Perhaps the Mississippi? Barbara Price has been sent some information on the Mississippi River Cruises, which she has forwarded to me and asked me to find out if there are Club Members interested in a future cruise on the Mississippi. If you are interested in a cruise possibly in 2018, please let me know and I will coordinate with her. Dorothy McCain

7 GET-AROUND GAZETTE PAGE 7 Tech Talk Ed Morgan, Life Member 1982 How to give your Corvette Alzheimer s? - Just Disconnect your Battery. In the good old days there were manual push buttons on the radio and the clock was a dial type that you would reset with your wrist watch. From 1981 on virtually every car has computerized engine controls, a loss of voltage causes the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to lose adaptive memory settings. In 2003 and newer models, It does more than erase PCM memory if you disconnect the battery. The PCM can take 50 to 100 miles to relearn, during that time the transmission will relearn how to shift and feel. It can reset the ABS and Airbag modules, the last 15 minutes of driving are in the computer and the insurance company finds out your ABS and airbags are not working. It resets the Climate Control module, it may not relearn until a relearn or reprogram procedure is preformed with a factory scan tool. No A/C until this happens. It resets the Body Control Module BCM. The BCM affects the power accessories as power windows, memory seats, power sunroof, electronic suspension settings. Worse yet, the BCM is the gatekeeper for vehicles that have a CAN Controller Area Network. If the BCM cannot communicate with all of the other modules it can cause all kinds of problems. It can reset or disable the anti-theft system. The engine may crank but not start. It causes a loss of channel settings on an electronic clock/radio. This is more of an annoyance than problem, but how many of us know how to reset the radio or change the time? At Sears they use a 120 Volt device that puts 12 volt into the vehicle and it maintains all of the memories. C5 goes dead in 3 weeks, a C7 in one week without a battery tender. Several members have had operations, or treatments that they prefer not to discuss. So let s all have good thoughts for all of our members, with the wish that we see them smiling and doing well soon. I noticed that Rosalinda and Ronnie Maye have been on a great adventure to Tennessee, can t wait to hear their stories. The Thiessens and Skillman s went to Lake Havasu to the 7th annual Balloon Festival.
