3 FROM THE EXALTED RULER The lodge year is moving along and while it is hot, the summer is coming to an end. I would like to thank everyone that is helping around the lodge. We had a strong District Deputy with Earl Bouchard creating a wonderful meal. The Beach Bash party was an enjoyable event. Thank you to Tom Smoker for donating and cooking the meal. A group of members donated funds and Earl Bouchard purchased a closed camera system. It is being installed in the lodge to protect our members and Lodge assets. We are moving into the holiday season. Plan to attend the children s Halloween party. Gerry Cody is putting together a great event. We are going to raffle off the last four baskets at the Thanksgiving event. Please purchase tickets to have a chance to win the baskets and help Sunland and Tujunga families during the holiday season. The weekly blast continues to have all of the events that take place at the lodge. Think about stopping by a meeting and have a meal. We continue to be active and look forward to seeing you. 4 FROM THE ESTEEMED LEADING KNIGHT Wow, I cannot believe it has already been six months since becoming your Leading Knight. So much has been happening and still lots of activities planned for the next six months. In August we had our District Deputy Noor Chowdry visit our lodge, dinner and dessert was excellent as always. On our last Friday night dinner we show a very strange version of Beach Blanket Bingo to kick off our September Beach Party. I am planning on having a movie after the last Friday night dinner every month. So come on out for dinner and a movie for only $ Free popcorn is served during the movie and I am trying to keep them themed. So our next movie with be a Halloween film on Friday October 28th. Our September Beach Party was fun, the food was great, the band Revolution Road was awesome and the baskets raffled were beautiful. Thank you to EVERYONE for helping to put on our annual fundraiser for the Christmas basket program. And thank you ladies from Canoga Park Elks Lodge for a fun evening of dancing. Autumn is finally here but the weather is not. As I type this article our weather outside is 100 degrees. I am ready to bring out the sweaters, beanies, gloves and coats. With the holidays fast approaching we are having a few new events to occur. October 22nd is a Poker Run to benefit the Purple Pig. Entry is $15.00 for the rider (before October 15th) and $10.00 for additional rider. After the 15th the cost to register is $20.00 and the additional rider remains at $ On October 23rd at 2:00 pm is our 3rd Annual Children s Halloween party. Free and open to the public. There are carnival style games, costume contest, pumpkin decorating contest and of course, CANDY. We are also serving hot dogs, chips and dessert. Bring your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and even the neighbor kids for a fun, safe afternoon. (cont d) In November there is a Ladies High Tea planned for Saturday November 19th. There will be more information on this on Constant Contact or you can call the lodge and speak to Melissa Ford, Lodge Secretary or leave a message for Karen Perriseau, Lodge Chaplin. In November we are also having Earl s Famous Thanksgiving Dinner. Bringing in Veterans from the Sepulveda VA hospital for a day of great food and wonderful company is always a treat for both. Watch for additional information on Constant Contact. For our community, the American Legion Post #377 is having Night at the Races featuring Earl Bouchard s portable race track. October 15th dinner starts at 6:30 pm and for only a $10.00 donation. Ed and Art are cooking a German style dinner featuring Heidi s famous potato salad. There will be raffles, a door prize and tons of fun. Get over to the American Legion and support our community clubs. As always, thank you for allowing me to serve as your Leading Knight. If you want to run an event please talk to one our many Past Exalted Rulers and they will guide you to chairing a successful event. And stay tuned for our upcoming events in December March. Fraternally, Gerry Cody Leading Knight FROM THE CHAPLAIN S CORRNER Fall has arrived and with the fall season comes the Holidays, Time for the Harvest which is associated with grains, corn fruits and vegetables and a time to celebrate with friends and relatives and don t forget Halloween is part of the harvest. 5 FROM THE LODGE SECRETARY It has been a real pleasure meeting and getting to know everyone here at the Lodge. I have made many good friends and I enjoy the banter in the Elbow Room. For sure it s a place to unwind, visit and enjoy good company but all good times. I want to thank three of my fav ladies for the great trip to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library.. A great big Hug and Thank You to Karen Perriseau for all the great help she gives in the kitchen (a real Energizer bunny), she surprises me each and every time. And Thank You to Betty Michalski for her beautiful table set ups and decorations. They made the DD dinner look so elegant. I bow to these two great ladies and all the years of service to the Elks Lodge. Hope to see all of you soon. 6 THANKSGIVING DINNER AT THE LODGE Again, we will be having Thanksgiving Dinner for members and guests as well as veterans from Sepulveda VA at the Lodge. We ask that everyone bring a special side dish to go along with the turkey, stuffing, potatoes and gravy. A sign-up sheet is in the Elbow Room for you to let us know what you will bring and how many guests you have. ANNUAL CHRISTMAS BASKETS I would like to remind everyone that Christmas is coming and before that Thanksgiving. We soon start shopping for food for our Christmas Baskets. The best sales are before Thanksgiving for food. A lot of the grocery stores have big sales on turkeys or even free turkeys, and they also usually have great sales on canned goods. If you are able and would like to contribute you can donate money, non-perishable food, turkeys or canned hams, bring them to the Elbow room any day after 3 PM. If you know of a family in need or an elderly person or couple please let us know or leave a note at the Lodge. Last year we distributed baskets to over 40 families. A lot of the names were last minute. It helps with the shopping to have a list in advance. With your generous support, I hope we can this year again grow in the amount of families we feed and buy toys, socks, scarves, etc. for.
