1 EVERYBODY NEEDS A LITTLE MOOSE IN THEIR LIFE The Leader Your Monthly Newsletter Lodge 898 LODGE 898 Issue FEBRUARY 2019 July 2015 PORTSMOUTH MOOSE LODGE VALUED VETERANS FLAG POLE FUNDRAISER Brothers and Co-Workers, The valued Veterans of Portsmouth Moose Lodge met in November and took on a project to put a new 40 foot flagpole in the center of our grass section, just in front of the monument. Another flag pole the size of our existing pole will be erected to the right side of the monument. The two flagpoles on each side will fly the Virginia, POW, and MIA flags. The 40 foot aluminum flagpole in front will fly a 8x12 American Flag. With lights on the flags, they will fly 24 hours, around the clock to honor our valued Veterans, first responders, Moose members, Brothers, Co-Workers and all. A walkway will surround the new 40 foot flagpole with names on the bricks for anyone you would like to honor. Bricks are $50 each with the engraved name. You can also add a personalized insignia to honor military service for an additional $2. This will be a lasting memory for your loved ones, and a beautiful sight when the flags fly on Memorial Day in The Committee Chairman is Carlos Williams, our Valued Veteran of the year. On the Committee is: Leroy Coleman, Bob Knight, Peck Seader, and Senior Regent Katie Stewart. Please see one of the Committee Members to help you purchase your brick. Note: After you purchase your bricks, you can pick a tag with the number on it. This number will be where the brick will set in place on the walkway. Thanks for being a Moose. 2 From the Governor, Brothers and Co-Workers, February is known as the month of love and we all need to share a little bit of it around the lodge these days. So let s all be kind to one another and learn how to talk out our differences. During last month s Mid-Year Conference, several topics were covered starting with membership and the declining numbers that are not staying around after their first year. Next was decorum and how to act like ladies and gentlemen in the Social Quarters/Game Room or anytime on the property. Then we covered the Incident Report Log and the importance of detailed reporting and who can make an incident report. There was a brief discussion on the Stand as One program, which would allow the lodge to have LOOM and WOTM as one lodge. With all having equal members rights to vote on lodge operations. And finally, the recommended changes from Moose International to the by-laws that it includes the vote on going non-smoking in all Moose Lodges. Please note, this change will probably remain on the rules ballot at all future Moose International Conventions until it is passed. I would like to thank all the volunteers that helped in the District One Hospitality Room by bringing in food and drinks, working the pull tab table, serving beverages and checking badges. Dave did a great job in keeping the music going and singing our favorite songs that we all enjoy, as well as keeping the dance floor hopping. Once again, Portsmouth Lodge, men and ladies stood out and the District 1 President was more than thankful for our support. A special thanks to Taunya and Jerry for organizing and setting up the room. We can all work on membership and showing new members all the things that happen in our lodge, but I think it starts by just getting involved. You see what is going on and providing input to issues or projects that are needed. Secondly, we must help one another in keeping our lodge clean i.e. cleaning off your table and moving any furniture back to its original place. And finally, we should be telling friends and family about our lodge and all the good we do in our community and organization. The bottom line is the more members that we get involved, the more the lodge grows and the more successful and longer we will be around. Success starts with each one of us. In closing, the fastest way to communicate your ideas, concerns, or even a suggestions is to contact me at and we will schedule a time that you can come and speak to the Board of Officers: Comments in the Social Quarters don t have much value, but ones made in a Lodge meeting are worth their weight in gold. Fraternally yours, Robert Logan SEE A VET - THANK A VET Never pass up a chance to thank a Veteran for his or her service. Let them know that we appreciate their sacrifice and dedicated service. From the Senior Regent- Hello coworkers, I hope your January and the new year brought you all a fresh outlook and many great things. Last month was a great month. Community service chairman, Erica Saunders put on a great jitney and game party. Junior Regent Kathy Saunders put on a Sunday game party like a pro. Thank you both for working so hard for our chapter! Who can forget all the fun and time spent learning or seeing friends from all over the state that took place at the mid-year conference in Norfolk? Four of our coworkers were conferred into the Academy of Friendship as well. A big congratulations to Stephanie Niavez, Patti Hollingsworth, Jessyca Yoakum and Cathy Fox! The official Visitor, Kim Pettit was so much fun and made our time spent in session both informative and enjoyable. The hospitality room was great as well, I hear the food was amazing. I hope you had the opportunity to hear my report also. Moving on to February, we have a lot of fun events planned. On the 2 nd Moose Charities Chairman, Jessica Hedhli will be holding our annual rock-a-thon from 1-5 in the Social Quarters. Come watch some movies, spend time connecting with other coworkers and raise some money for Moose Charities! On the 3 rd we will have a paint party at 3, the cost is $30 and half of the fee comes back to the chapter. Come out and have a good time painting and enjoy some more fellowship with coworkers. Look on the Facebook page for a picture of what we will be painting. February 9 th will bring with it our first ever Valentines, Denim and Diamonds Dance from 7 to midnight in the back hall. Cost is $15 per person or $20 per couple. Put on some of your favorite denim or sparkly outfits and come dance with us! Please bring an appetizer to share. There will also be a cash bar. We are really looking forward to this event. On the 14 th Mooseheart/Moosehaven chairman Linda Bagwell will be holding her jitney/game party at 6pm. Please come out and support Linda and the chapter. We love these events but they are only a success with your participation. Bring a friend and show them what this moose life is all about!
