1 Volunteer Needed Hearing Screening November 3rd The hearing Van will be at Jackson Elementary on November 3 rd to screen all Kindergarten students. We need volunteers to walk students from the classroom to the hearing van. Please fill out the following form if you are able to volunteer. 2 Extra hands needed for JACKSON SCHOOL GARDEN PREP DAY Saturday Oct. 11 2:30-4:30pm We have officially been given the green light to get a school garden going at Jackson and are excited to get a head start this fall We need volunteers to help us prep the plot this Saturday so it s ready for planting in the spring. We are looking for two sets of volunteers: people with a truck to pick up a load of compost at the County Compost Site at 2:30 pm or a little before. Instructions: Linn County Compost Location:2250 A Street SW Cedar Rapids, IA The site will load you. When you get there, check in at the scale house and state you are there to pick up a load of compost. They will direct you where to go. One load of compost is free per household so there is no need to weigh on the way out. Head back to Jackson and we ll have a crew to help unload. 2. Several hands to help unload dirt from trucks - Kids are welcome to help but we also need some serious adult power Instructions: Bring shovels and rakes to help unload trucks starting at 2:45pm. The more hands we have the faster it will go. 3 " Walk or Bike to School" Punch Card" Contest: Monday, Oct 6 - Friday, Oct 10 In honor of National Walk to School Day, Jackson has a contest to get as many children as possible to walk/bike to school in five days. Each student can receive one punch card that they can get a punch for each day they walk/bike to or from school. Your child can pick up a card in the school office or contact the coordinator: Julie McMahan the.mcmahan.family@gmail.com During the week of Oct 6, children will receive punches on their card from Mrs. Skogman in the school office if they walked/biked to or from school. Jackson participants will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win prizes, including a scooter You don t want to miss this exciting contest Let s get kids walking and biking

4 Rules: " Walk or Bike to School" Punch Card" Contest: Monday, Oct 6 - Friday, Oct Write your name and teacher on the back of the card. 2. Keep your card with you for all of the contest (find a spot that it won t get lost, like in your backpack or folder). 3. Each day you walk or bike during the contest, go to office and get a punch on your card from Mrs. Skogman. Only 1 punch allowed each day. 4. After the end of the contest, turn in your card to the office for a chance to win prizes, by Tuesday, Oct 14. Notes: There s no cost to participate. All students at Jackson are eligible to participate. Prize winners will be announced at school on Wednesday, Oct 15. Let s get walking and biking

15 Kennedy Dance and Cheer Spirit Clinic WHEN: October 28, 2014 TIME: 5:00-7:45 PM CHECK IN: 4:45 pm (in the South Foyer by the large gym) WHERE: Kennedy West Gym (Small gym) WHAT: Each group will learn 1 dance and 1 cheer. Each student will receive a t-shirt. Cheese pizza, fruit snacks, and drink will be provided. PERFORMANCE: The parent performance will be at 7:15 pm that evening in the West Gym (small gym). Please come early so you can see your student perform PERFORMANCE CHECK IN: The participants will be in the care of the dance team and cheer squads until the end of the performance. After the performance, parents can pick up their student(s) in the gym. 16 JACKSON PTA FAQs What is the Jackson PTA? The Jackson PTA is a non-profit group of parents and teachers. We work together to support Jackson Elementary by providing additional resources when needed. We also work together to try to build a strong sense of Jackson school community. What programs does the Jackson PTA support? The Jackson PTA supports Jackson Elementary by supplying additional classroom needs like microphones. The PTA provides each teacher with $100 to spend on other classroom items. The Jackson PTA supports a school based technology fund. We also support the IMC with additional books and supplies. The Jackson PTA funds classroom field trips. We sponsor the 5 th Grade Recognition. The Jackson PTA provides funding for a week of volunteer staffed after school enrichment programs during the spring. We support America Reads week. The Jackson PTA sponsors a book fair. We pay for a guest reader to visit the school. The Jackson PTA offers a Community Caring Fund to help Jackson families in need. The Jackson PTA also supports the staff by providing conference lunches and by providing a staff appreciation celebration week. How does the Jackson PTA build a sense of School Community? The Jackson Elementary PTA helps build a sense of school community by organizing and funding fun events such as school movie night, swim night, the Halloween Hike, an ice skating event, a roller skating event, a night at the Kernel s, Breakfast with a Buddy, the Kindergarten breakfast and our Spring Carnival Event. How does the Jackson PTA fund these programs? The Jackson PTA funds these initiatives by having one large fundraiser in the fall and supplementing all programs by collecting box tops, collecting soup can labels, collecting Hy-Vee receipts, collecting pop tops, offering birthday books, offering SCRIP purchases and offering Hy-Vee Coupon Books purchases. How do I become a Jackson PTA Member? How do I volunteer? Becoming a member is easy Just fill out the form on the back of this flyer and pay your membership fee of $7 per person and $13 per couple.
