1 ROUND & SQUARE NOTES Richmond Square and Round Dance Association, INC., Newsletter May 2012 VOLUME XXIX NO. 10 PRESIDENT S NOTES Dear Fellow Square Dancers, Summertime is coming, and the dance floor is warming up! We have several great summer dances coming up, and we hope you ll make plans to come and dance. Also, things are getting hot for the Richmond Fall Festival, so jump on in, and get registered for the Festival, if you haven t already done so. First, we want to thank everyone who supported the RSARDA Italian Dinner and Dance this past March. It was a great success and helped the Richmond Fall Festival by raising over $700! Additionally, our thanks go out to Debra Broughear who organized the event, and to Gene Chamberlain and Connie Cox who generously gave their time to call and cue for this dance. What s going on in Richmond this summer? Well, first it s the Men s Bake Off on June 9 th, with Jerry Biggerstaff calling and Connie Cox cueing. It starts with early DBD at 7:15, followed by the regular dance starting at 8:00 pm. Men-you re on notice. We re looking for you guys to put on your baking/cooking/grilling aprons and get to work. Bring us your baklava, beef bourguignon, baked Alaska! Or, see if you can get some professional help from, umm, maybe Martin s? On Saturday, July 14 th, we have our annual McGeorge Fund Dance. We hope you will come out and support Henrico County for this dance. All of the proceeds from this dance go to the McGeorge Fund, which assists needy families with recreational programs for their children. Jeremy Butler will be calling, and Connie Cox and George Springer will be cueing rounds. Thank you, Henrico County, for letting us dance in your schools, and thank you Jeremy, Connie and George for giving your time for this event! Moving on to August, it s our annual Watermelon Dance on Saturday, August 11 th, with Bill Harrison calling and Pris Collins cueing. Early rounds begin at 7:30 pm. Come early, stay late, and eat watermelon! Peeking into September, we will have another Booster dinner and dance on September 8 th to raise funds for the Festival. The menu is still in the development stages, but we know it will be great! Jim Durham and George Springer have graciously volunteered their time and talents for this dance. Like the last Booster Dinner/Dance, tickets will be sold in advance. Stay tuned for more details!! Dress for summer dances is casual, and they are Plus/Mainstream dances. We have a great summer line up for dancers, so please come out and join us! Elaine and Steve Ragland FALL FESTIVAL REPORT So, what s been going on with the Richmond Fall Festival? Well, in a word, LOTS! First, the RSARDA Board is heading up the Fall Festival. The many facets of directing the Festival have been divided up among the Board members. We have folks in charge of advertising, in charge of the dance program, serving as liaisons for the hotel facilities, the list goes on. What are we asking for from you folks? First, register for the Festival. Hopefully, most of you know that we are holding a friendly competition to see which Richmond club can get the greatest percentage of its members registered by the end of May. If you haven t already registered for the Festival, please register as soon as possible. We re also looking for advertisements for the program book. We have over 100 dancers in the Richmond clubs, and if each dancer got just 3 business card sized ads, that would be 300 ads, at $15 each, or $4,500. In order to have a Festival, we need money, so PLEASE!!- help us out-sell a couple of ads. Your hairdresser, your auto mechanic, a retail business near the Festival; it can be done, if we all pitch in. If you need an ad form, please contact Madalyn or Chuck Pritham at We will again be having a silent auction, so if you have something you can contribute for this event, we would LOVE to hear from you. Debra Broughear is heading up this event, and is looking for auction items. These

2 include gently used items of interest, donations from local businesses, hand-crafted items, and gift certificates. In the past, we ve had some wonderful items donated, and we hope to have as nice a turnout this year! If there is any assistance you can give, please give Debra a call at Are you going out of town for a dance or festival? Why don t you take some flyers with you, or maybe the tri-fold table stand advertiser? Capitol Squares CLUB NEWS Capitol Squares was reminded of our lost banner by the wonderful picture in the April 1st Newsletter. For those who don't recall, it was Jeremy Butler wearing his 'Capitol Squares banner shorts'. So on April 19th, we stormed over to Circle 8's regular dance night 'to get back our coveted banner shorts'. We were pleased with how well we were greeted. The dancing was great and the homemade strawberry ice cream was a special treat. When it came time to get the 'banner shorts' back, Circle 8 seemed to be relieved to part with it. That left us wondering "had Jeremy 'done something' in the shorts that made them glad to get rid of them??" NAW!! In the end, a really good time was had by all and we enjoyed our visit. 'Stealing banners' is taking on a new importance, with the reduction in membership in the area's remaining clubs. It is a fine tradition which needs to be practiced as often as possible. It helps to maintain friendships in our square dancing family, and build some individual coffers of the remaining clubs in the Richmond area. John Revene Colonial Squares HAPPY, HAPPY SUMMER-TIME DANCING DAYS & NIGHTS TO ALL YOU DANCERS IN THE AREA CLUBS! Exciting times are ahead of us SO MUCH dancing & friend-making in your squares! Go out to dance with the area clubs, to clubs OUT of your area of

3 the state, to out-of-state State conventions, AND to the NATIONAL CONVENTION in late June in Spokane, Washington!! Dance until you can t dance anymore then, look back at all the FUN you had!!! Keep your dancing feet happy this Summer! card!! She came to the club to collect her prize the following Monday evening. Staying to watch us dance, she intends to start lessons with us in September! The annual Sweetheart Weekend dance took place on February 17 th & 18 th in Virginia Beach, and several of our club members, including Paul & Betty Dubovsky, never miss this chance for a romantic weekend RIGHT on the beach! It is a really fun-filled weekend of dancing with old friends and new to GREAT callers & cuers! The Worley family sponsors this dance weekend each year. Try it next February you ll like it! On Monday evening, February 20 th our demo loving club members performed at the Riverview On The Appomattox Convalesance Home in Hopewell. No new dancers are acquired from these demos, but the pleasure given & received from the occupants is well worth every step we dance! Smiles are a sweet reward!! Monday evening, March 19 th, had our club members performing ANOTHER demo! This one was at The Brighter Living Facility, an assisted living home, also in Hopewell! Smiles awaited us as the audience anxiously waited for the lively music and square dancing to begin. Wearing brightly colored square-dance attire and allowing skirts to fly, we ALL had a GREAT time the dancers, the attentive audience, and our caller, Gene, too the little old ladies there just LOVE to hear him sing! Our club graduation was held on Monday, May 7 th, with 6 graduates Dwight & Sara Durman, George & Tammie Elko, Charlie Mathews, and Faye Vest. What a marvelously fun evening it was!! Watching them dance with BIG balloons between their legs, dance blind-folded & bare-footed to miss stepping on a sliced piece of pie placed in the center of the square (a wet sponge in reality), and dance with a mop angel brought so many laughs to us all!! They all passed their written test and joined our club as members!!! March 26 th brought our club some sad news. Oliver (Ollie) Crum passed away. He and his wife, Ollie shared many years of dancing with us. His smiling face will be missed. Saturday, April 14 th brought our club sponsored dance to Holladay School. Jeremy Butler called and Miss Judy Jaworski cued that evening to a rather small group of dancers, but oh, the FUN we all had dancing to them! Also that evening Ed Jaworski drew the lucky ticket for the winner of our club s fund-raising raffle! Cathy Powall of Colonial Heights won the $ dollar VISA gift

4 Chamberlain, our cuer is Connie Cox, and our line instructor is Diane Hollins. Come join us for fun Monday evenings of dancing!! George & Jeannine Springer will be the instructors and will begin with the Basic Waltz. Contact George for additional info: gspringer08@comcast.net Circle Eight The Virginia State Convention took place at the Chesapeake Marriott Hotel in Chesapeake, Va. on May 10 th, 11 th, & 12 th. The attendance was higher than last year and the dancing halls FULL of happy dancers! Our club was well represented, too! Next year it will be there again, so BE SURE to join in for a weekend filled with dancing fun with old & new friends!! This is OUR STATE CONVENTION, so let s support it! Our club meets on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the Colonial Heights High School cafeteria in Colonial Heights. Our caller is the renowned Gene It has come to my attention that some clarity is needed. Circle Eight has maintained its good name and not gone to Circle Ten, as reported in the April 2012 Newsletter. Ten has its merits, but eight has a square feel to it. We plan to keep it! We have enjoyed dancing with a number of guests and we hope you will join us whenever you can. We will be at Thompson Middle School until schools close (June 14, Thursday). We will meet at Tomahawk Baptist Church for the summer. We will not meet every Thursday night during the summer, but will start our summer dances at Tomahawk Baptist Church on Thursday, June 28th at 7p.m. Our planned schedule is as follows: June 28 July 12 July 19 August 2 August 16

5 We welcome your attendance. Come and dance with us. We have had two successful dances this spring. We were fortunate to have great callers and cuers. Jimmy Roberson and George Springer came for our March 24th dance. Our late spring dance was held May 5th with Jimmy Roberson and Jim Adcock, with early rounds. Each dance was well attended and we appreciated everyone s participation. As usual, we thank our club cooks for a bountiful buffet table. Our next social gathering is the Club Picnic on June 2th. The yearly picnic always draws a big crowd. The new officers for the year are installed and we thank those who have served the previous year. And, we just have a great time sharing time together. We thank Ruth and Clint Stirling for hosting us at their new community center. Summer weather hopefully will bring a wealth of good health to the club as we have had a number of folks dealing with health issues through the winter and spring. Thankfully everyone seems to be on the mend! Many thanks to all of the officers who served so faithfully throughout this past year. In late February we held our Mardi Gras Dance, what a great time we had. The costumes were awesome, our caller David Staples got in the Mardi Gras mood and called a great dance. This dance just gets better each year. Circle Eight and the Richmond Square and Round Dancers have had a major loss with the death of Virginia Nuckols in February. We will miss her lovely smile and gentle spirit. She was a real encourager and she loved her dancing! Best Wishes from Circle Eight! Come and dance with us! June Grant, Secretary Tuckahoe Squares The Tuckahoe s have had a busy Spring; we have had a number of great theme dances and have many more planned for the remainder of the year. Please join us at the West End Community Center on Fridays 8-10:30pm for fun and fellowship. We have a different guest caller each week, checkout our schedule below. We just finished our quarterly meeting and have a installed our new officers for the upcoming Year. Our class this year graduated on April 6 th, even though it was a small class, the new dancers were great. Thanks to Gene for a fine job of teaching.

6 TIDBITS A special birthday wish to Jim Saunders on June 5 th. Group of dancers at the 2012 State Festival in Chesapeake, Va. In April we had a very successful yard sale, under the guidance and leadership of Judith Ann Marcum. Many thanks to Judith Ann and to all of those who participated in setup, cleanup, helping during the sale, bringing items to sell, and of course buyers. After the Yard Sale we enjoyed the wonderful voice of Tom Miller, who called our Saturday evening dance at Holladay school. Please join us for our annual Picnic on Sunday June 3 rd at Dorey Park, the picnic and dance is free, just bring an item to share. The festivities and games begin at 3pm with dinner at 4:30 followed with a mainstream/plus dance with Gene Chamberlain. The Ashland DBD dancers on a recent Sunday in April.
