Asheville, NC Dance Schedule: 1 st and 3 rd Thursdays each month. Workshop 6:30 to 7:30 PM., Dances from 7:30 to 9:30PM. Sylvan Squares St Timothy s UMC 1020 Asheville Hwy., Brevard Sylvan Squares wrapped up 2014 with the annual Santa Sashay with caller Stan Russell and visitors from several clubs. In 2015, we are excited to host our first hex dance workshop. Jimmy Roberson from the Raleigh area will be calling on April 10th for our Crazy Socks dance. The next day he will be leading our hex workshop. The workshop is open to experienced dancers. The morning session from 10:00-12:00 will be mainstream. The afternoon session from 2:00-4:00 will be plus. There will be an evening dance from 7:00-9:00PM. You can attend all day for $30 or just the morning session for $10. For more information and registration go to our website at While you are marking your calendar, be sure to circle May 22nd when we will have Paul Cote out of Texas calling at our White Squirrel Twirl. He will also be calling the week before at PRIDE. Our regular dances are the 2nd and 4th Fridays for 6:30 workshop followed by 7-9:00 mainstream, plus and line. At 9:00, join us for something new and different when Jim Robson and Marty Northrup pair up for some hex dancing. 3

4 The Mountain Mixers Linville Land Harbor Linville, NC Our dance season for the summer of 2014 runs through Sunday September 28. Each dance week begins with Mainstream/Plus on Friday night (featuring regional and some national callers), Plus/A-2 on Sunday afternoon (featuring national callers), A-2 on Monday night (Jerry Biggerstaff calling) and A-Review on Wednesday night (Ron Libby calling). Our new facility and changing the night to Tues is working well for everyone. We have completed 8 square dance lessons with 4th and 5th graders in 3 elementary schools, one more school to go. We have fun with the children and they enjoy dancing with us. We need to attract younger square dancers. In March Eva House will celebrate 50 years of square dancing. Her late husband, Wayne, and she attended a Fun Night at their church. They, along with their church friends, decided to take lessons. They graduated in March The group formed Valley Squares of Shelton, CT, which remained active until 2009.There was only one dance level at that time. Women wore short skirts and full petticoats, no long skirts. Men wore Western wear. Eva has lots of stories of fun and crazy things they did back then. She continued dancing after Wayne passed away. Eva was fortunate a year later to get together with Dick House, also a square dancer. Eva still loves square dancing and plans to continue for many more years. 5 Land of Sky Squares 36 Grove Street Asheville, NC Over the holidays, LAND of SKY donated dozens of Teddy Bears and delivered them with a $50 check to Steadfast House for women and children through ABBCM. We invite everyone to put your heart on your sleeve, wear your beads, and come celebrate Mardi Gras on Friday Feb 13th with Jerry Biggerstaff calling. Feb 27th will be a regular Dance. March 13th's dance "The Wearing of the Green' celebrates our Guest Caller Patty Greene and St. Patrick's Day. Can you guess what color to wear? Everyone is always welcome at our Friday Dances, 7:00-7:30 Plus Workshops, Dance 7:00 to 9:30. Our Tuesday Dances begin with Plus Workshops 7:00 to 7:45 and Student Dances 7:45 to 9:15. We thank our caller Jerry Biggerstaff for his calling and teaching. High Mountain Squares Franklin, NC The High Mountain Squares 2014 dance year was very successful. Our 13 th Annual Toys for Tots Dance December 7 th to benefit the children of Western NC and Northeast GA was a great success. More than 60 dancers took part bringing in well over 100 toys. The Smoky Mountain Detachment #973 of the Marine Corps Reserve was on hand to pick up the toys. High Mountain Squares are most proud of the over $950 we raised this year and donated to Angel Medical Center Hospice in Franklin. Our schedule and callers for 2015 has been finalized. It is packed with lots of great dancing, great callers, and some surprises. Jim Duncan, Ace McGee, Glen Walters, Marty Northrup, Ken Perkins, Tom Pustinger, Jerry Biggerstaff, Richard Smith, Stan Russell, and Herb Franklin will be some of our callers. Check us out. Our Basic/Mainstream class that started January 11th will graduate May 15 th with Jim Duncan the instructor. Come celibate with our new dancers. It's only a few months off, but mark your calendar for June 7 th. It will be the 15 th Annual Great Watermelon Party. Callers Ken Perkins and Tom Pustinger are waiting to welcome everyone to Watermelon Time. It's the social event of the year in Franklin. Sunday from 2 till 5ish. All the dancing, food, and watermelon y'all can handle. High Mountain Squares dance Western Style Square Dancing, mainstream with announced plus tips 1 st, 3 rd, and 5 th Fridays. From age 11 to college age and beyond. Marty Northup is calling. Our dance schedule is the 2nd and 4th Saturday with Ken Perkins calling the first dance and Marty calling the last dance of the month. Jan 24th will be our Empty Pantry dance with donated cans of food going to the Haywood Shelter. We welcome all visitors and they are only charged $6.00. We are a mainstream club and you can come in casual or western wear. 7 Calendars Thanks to Kim Cook for again constructing the Federation calendar. This year the calendar will be distributed to all clubs as a digital file. These files can be shared (as puff or MS Word files) with all your members. Individuals wanting paper copies can print their own. Each club should print one calendar to keep on permanent display at all of your dances. You might want to print, Please do not take on it to assure is stays on display. Perhaps a volunteer at each club would volunteer to print a hard copy for any or your members who don t have the capability. At the end of the year we can assess whether this experiment works. Elementary Students Square Dancing Thanks to the dedication of Bill Coulthart and a group of Southern Lights volunteers, 4th and 5th grade elementary students have been learning some square dance calls. Hopefully, we are planting some fruitful seeds that will nurture future square dancers. 7
