The meeting will be from 7:00 PM-7:30 PM in the RMS Library. You can get your tryout information there and ask any questions you may have about cheerleading. All students who wish to try out must have a parent or legal guardian present at the meeting. A clinic will be March 3 rd, March 4 th, and March 6 th. Tryouts will be held on March 7 th. Future Scientists compete in Roach Science Fair STAAR Dates 7th grade winners : 6th grade Math - April 22 Reading - April 23 7th grade Writing - April 1 & 2 Math - April 22 Reading - April 23 8th grade Math - April 1 Reading - April 2 Social Studies - April 22 Science - April 23 Results of the Roach Spelling Bee Congratulations to 6 th grader Aranya Krishnan, the winner of Roach Middle School s Spelling Bee. Aranya faced some stiff competition but was able to prevail late in round #10 when she correctly spelled the championship word, guineas. Finishing tied for second were 6 th graders Yash Sharma and Rishul Aggarwal. Aranya will now move on to represent Roach Middle School in the Collin County Spelling Bee. Good luck Aranya! 1 st place Emma Hackley s entry on Air Filters 2 nd place Gage May for his entry in the cloud 3 rd place Keely Land for Oil Spills Honorable Mention goes to Karthik Naidu and Brennan Black for Pencil Resistors 8th grade winners : We had a 3 way tie for 1st place Congratulations to the following : Paige Romero for her project called Multitasking is Easy if you Learn with Do Re Mi Miranda Servey and Bea Remorca for Goodbye Fertilizer and Jeffrey Li and Aaron Putman with the project Your Phone Could Kill You Honorable mentions were awarded to : Sophia Quiroz, Krishna Karur and Supreet Bhavireddy Several of these projects will compete at the Regional Science Fair in Dallas later this month.
2 Roach Pentathlon Meeting Dates Friday, 2/14, PM Friday, 2/21, PM Friday, 3/4, PM Friday, 3/18, PM Scrimmage: Tuesday, 4/1 From 3:25-5:00 PM Tuesday, 4/8, PM Tuesday, 4/15, PM Tuesday, 4/22, PM Friday, 4/25, PM Celebration: Tuesday, 4/29, 3:25-5:00PM (Some dates are subject to change due to outside practices, meetings, or conflicts) Roach Middle School is finalizing plans for our 1st Pentathlon Team. The meet is on Saturday, April 26th, See the practice times to the left. All afternoon practices are during normal tutorials. See Mr. Ratcliff in room 705 for more information Authors Neal Shusterman and Eric Elfman will be visiting RMS! On Wednesday, February 12 th, award winning author Neal Shusterman and his writing partner Eric Elfman will be at RMS to promote their latest book Telsa s Attic. Students who purchase a book are guaranteed an invitation to attend the author presentation that will be held in the library on Wednesday, February 12 th. A percentage of all pre-order sales will also be donated to Frisco ISD libraries. Please tell the cashier you are with Frisco ISD as a percentage of all in-store purchases that day will benefit Frisco ISD libraries. We are excited to offer this opportunity to our students and to add an exciting new book to your family s home library. Safety Concerns The front parking lot is for staff and visitor parking ONLY and should NOT be used as a thoroughfare or a student drop-off area. Morning drop offs may be made on the north and south sides of the school. The front bus lane is reserved only for school buses and licensed child transportation providers. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation with these procedures. Safety is always going to receive priority over convenience. We will not deliver Valentines presents to students during school hours. Lunch Deliveries Lunches and other food items may only be dropped off by the student s parent/ guardian. This person will need to provide photo identification when dropping off the food. Parents/relatives may only provide lunch for their own students.
3 Important Dates from the Counselors February 6 Mandatory Meeting for 8 th grade students going to Independence who want to try out for Cheer or Drill Team. The meeting will be held at Heritage HS in the cafeteria at 6:00 PM February 20 8 th graders to the Collin County Career Showcase February 24and 25 Counselors visit 6 th grade classrooms for 7 th grade course registration. February 26and 27 Counselors visit 7 th grade classrooms for 8 th grade course registration. March 7 Current 6 th and 7 th grade registration cards are due back. March (Date: TBD) Cheer and Drill Team Tryouts for Heritage and Independence April 29 8 th grade field trip to the CTE center. May 2 Career Day May 9 Last Day for 8 th graders to make changes to their 9 th grade course requests. Notes from the Nurse If you haven t heard we are in the middle of flu season. It is not to late to receive a flu shot if you haven't gotten yours yet. Please remind your children that frequent and good hand washing is the best way to prevent the spread of infection and not to share food and drinks. If your child has a fever 100 or higher, please do not send them to school. They are contagious until they have been fever free for 24 hours without using any fever-reducing medication. 5 Band Competes at Solo and Ensemble The 7 th and 8 th grade band students competed in a Solo and Ensemble Contest in January. Roach Middle School had 92 students receive First Division Ratings in the Solo Competition and 64 students receive First Division Ratings for their participation in a Small or Medium Ensemble. In addition, the following students were named Outstanding Soloist/ Ensemble of the Day from their individual judges.
