IONS OAR DISTRICT 5M-6, Zone 4 NEWSLETTER for the SOUTH SAINT PAUL LIONS CLUB 1100 North Concord Street, South St. Paul, MN DECEMBER 2015 PROUDLY SERVING OUR COMMUNITY since 1946! Luke 2: When the angels had left them, and gone back into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Come, let us make our way to Bethlehem, and see for ourselves this happening which God has made known to us. 16 And so they went with all haste, and found Mary and Joseph there, with the child lying in the manger. 17 On seeing him, they discovered the truth of what had been told them about this child. 18 All those who heard it were full of amazement at the story which the shepherds told them; 19 but Mary treasured up all these sayings, and reflected on them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds went home giving praise and glory to God, at seeing and hearing that all was as it had been told them. from LION PRESIDENT BRIAN COUNIHAN I cannot believe that it is the middle of November as I write this message. Tuesday, December 1, 2015, and Tuesday, January 5, 2015, are the next scheduled meetings. Please make every effort to attend. This is the best way to know what the South St. Paul Lions are involved in, donating too and put your two cents in we believe what you have to say is important. Meetings are usually done within one hour and no more than two. Bring your calendars to jot down dates and verify the ones you read in this newsletter. Casual attire, work clothes even sandals with socks are welcome. DISTRICT 5M6 MID-WINTER CONVENTION Begins with the Annual Memorial Service on Friday, January 8, 2015 at 6:30PM at the Minneapolis Airport Marriott Hotel. Spouses are welcome to attend as well. Again, at NO COST! Also, we need 7 volunteers to serve as delegates. This is for the business meeting on Saturday, January 9, 2015 beginning at 9AM. Please let Lion Brian Counihan or Lion Jeff Bjerke know if you want to serve as a delegate for our club. We want to be well represented. Normal Lion s attire is welcomed. Lion Nick, please refrain from wearing your swimsuit to the business meeting. Our club does not need this kind of attention. Also, our club hosts a HOSPITALITY ROOM. I m looking forward to a great time with all Lions as we sell trees and welcome Santa. Please mark your calendars today. Actively participate in the variety of events. When you get involved, you will have fun helping us keep these events enjoyable for us and beneficial to the community. If you have any questions, my line is always open please call. Lion Dan and the Gambling Committee as well as our club continues to get requests for monies every week. As you have approved in our last business meeting, I have done my job, all the debits and credits are in the right columns. I am thankful for my wife Lou Ann, as she is the greatest partner in keeping our budget and books properly documented. It s the most beautiful time of the year. During each Vikings games on a Sunday, we host several meat raffles and this is a great place to sell your calendar raffle tickets. On Thursday evening, December 10, 2015 the Vikings will take on the Cardinals. If you are not selling Christmas trees, there is a place for you to enjoy a drink at any of our gambling sites Mattie s Lanes and the PNA. As many of you have heard, we are applying to get City approval for our opening a new gambling site at the

Moose Lodge in Inver Grove Heights. In an effort to show our support of this new venture, please dress in your Lions apparel and come to the Inver Grove Heights City Council meeting on Monday, December 14, 2015 beginning at 7:00PM. The meeting is held at the City Council Chambers at Inver Grove Heights City Hall Barbara Avenue. Beginning Tuesday, January 5, 2015 our club hosts Bar Bingo at Mattie s. 4 CHRISTMAS DINNER OPTIONS AVAILABLE TO YOU AND YOUR GUEST OPTION #1 OPTION #2 OPTION #3 OPTION #4 OPTION #5 New York Strip Steak Walleye, lightly seasoned & served with lemon Boneless chicken breast stuffed with wild rice Vegetarian Pasta Gluten Free Meal Also, for returning Lions and your guests, I have made every effort to make this night memorable for the right reasons. I have arranged for the room temperature to be inviting and comfortable for all. Each table is to have their dinners served simultaneously as will your dessert. I have even reviewed and sampled much of what the bar has to offer including Polish Blackberry Brandy. I look forward to your RSVP. from LION 1 st VICE-PRESIDENT MARK DOCHNIAK On Thursday, November 12, 2015 our club hosted with Pro Touch Painting the annual Thanksgiving Dinner for our area seniors. We served over 350 seniors! Thank you to all that helped us serve and connect with those that have worked so hard over the years to make our community great. Again, thank you to Pro Touch for their generous donation. Another treat at the Senior Dinner was the unveiling of the 2015 Fruit Cake. Thanks to hours of wrapping, Lion Jim Glenn and his wife Ceil made the fruitcakes from (they are fresh) even more appealing. So much so that they sold nearly 3 cases at the Dinner alone! Lion Doug Krech is leading this fundraising effort. Look for him and his fruitcakes around town. He has them at the Kaposia Convenience Center, Central Bank, Klecatsky s Southern Funeral Chapel, the PNA and has even sold them after Sunday Mass at St. John Vianney. Fr. Antone is rumored to have been his first customer. Our club is selling them at the Tree Lot and at the the Pancake Breakfast with Santa. Thank you to Lion Doug, Lion Jim and Ceil for their dedication and time. In the words of Lion Gerald Smith, Smitty (died 2011), we are happy to have Lion Doug as our guy!

Get to know your team. These teams are now the basis of our volunteering.

from LION 2 nd VICE-PRESIDENT PAUL ZUBRZYCKI On Saturday, December 12, 2015 at Lincoln Center we are having our annual Breakfast with Santa. Lions and the public enter on the NORTH SIDE of the school (Door #3). This is always a busy event, and we need all hands on deck for a smooth event. Lions are welcome to begin arriving to set-up around 6:30AM. Jeans and Lions shirts with aprons are the appropriate attire. If you have a propane tank you want to bring to run our gas griddles, please let me know Thank you to Lion Tim Krey for his willing to assist Santa. Here is a 2009 picture that includes the three members I know that have served as Santa. Lion Cliff Moore, Lion Dana Babbitt and Lion Tim Krey. from CHRISTMAS CHEER CHAIRS: LIONS JEFF SCHWARTZ & LION MIKE BAUER On Black Friday, November 27, 2015, the Lions Christmas Tree Lot officially opened. We appreciate each Lion that was able to come out on setting up the lot as well as helping the South St. Paul High School Packers Football players unload the truck. Our Wisconsin tree farmer has once again delivered wonderful looking trees. Thank you Lion Jerry Gunderman for again helping us choose such a great supplier as well as supplying all the price labels for the trees. Lion Wally Buchl and Lion Dave Waller have passed the baton is such classic style. We are well organized because of the efforts of all the diligence behind the scenes. With wonderful weather and loyal customers, in just our first weekend we were able to sell 1/3 of our trees. As many of you know, this is one of the most enjoyable times of the year. To make this tree-selling season for our customers and our teams a pleasant one, please let your team captain know when you are NOT able to serve during your scheduled time. If you can help out at another time, you are welcomed to serve with another team. The editor found out that that a few of our members have worked without the help of more than one other Lion. Even on a slow period of tree sales, this is too much work for one and not a great experience for our customers. A reminder for all, let the families know that we also have fruitcakes and calendar raffle tickets available for sale. Also, our Christmas Tree House is known to have wonderful food and beverage for us to enjoy. Please consume respectfully and responsibly

as well as use can and bottle koozies. Thank you to you all for spending so much time selling trees, tickets and fruitcakes as well as building such team and club comradery. If you have any questions, Lion Nick Steichen has been seen at each selling time of every team spreading cheer. If Lion Mike or I (Lion Jeff) are not handy, I am sure Lion Nick can help you out. A complete compliment of photos may be found on Facebook. SOUTHSTPAULLIONS/?ref=hl Bring your family to the South St. Paul Lions Santa Breakfast and to the SouthWest Lioness Santa Store. The store will be open so children can shop for really affordable family gifts. This wonderland of gift opportunity is located in the main level Lincoln Center gym. Santa will have candy canes and visit with the children. The SouthWest Lioness will be taking pictures with Santa. (Note: There will be a small charge). Santa will land in the Lincoln Center Cafeteria (Enter at Door #3 North Side of Building)

from CALENDAR RAFFLE CHAIR: LION JEFF SCHWARTZ Editor s note: There is a reason Lion Jeff has earned much recognition and respect in our club he remains involved and leads so many efforts. Thanks to his work and that of the print master Lion Tom Boser our annual Calendar Raffle tickets are already being distributed. Get yours today. Lion Jeff, Lion Dana Babbitt, Lion Dave Gangelhoff, Lion Dan Niederkorn and Lion Mike Bauer are also sources for more tickets. Our hope is that each club member takes and sells at least 10 tickets each. People buy these tickets for themselves or as stocking stuffers, businessman (who are people too) often purchase them for gifts to their referral sources, clients and suppliers. Whatever the reason, have your tickets ready to sell. We had one lady see the tickets and said, she has to get them for each of her nieces and nephews as well as her workmates. 15 tickets in all. These are a great deal at $10! Only 1,500 tickets are printed AND you have an opportunity to win every drawing! Each ticket is included in every drawing. If you don t have a ticket to sell and someone is interested, please let them know they can pick them up at the Christmas Tree Lot or any of our gambling sites. 9 from POLLY ZUBRZYCKI & VICKI BOSER In an effort to reach another level of charity, Vicki Boser, Lion Tom s wife, has created a gift basket as an enticement for your family donating gift(s) to the Toys for Tots organization. For each toy you and your family donate, you get one chance to win the $250 gift basket creation from Vicki. 10 toys = 10 chances in the drawing to be held at the Club s Christmas Party on December 17. Inspired by this generosity, Polly Zubrzycki, Lion Paul s wife has donated a wine basket valued around $100. Both gift baskets are priceless that is if you share it with friends. We look forward to your donations. Here is the latest 2016 District 5M6 Midwinter Convention Schedule. While tentative, I do not foresee dramatic changes. Remember, there is only your cost of time. No cost for you or your spouse. We look forward to seeing you at the convention.
