Recreation Connections Competitive Cookies, Cupcakes and Collectibles Would you like a TV with your cupcake? That was the question shoppers were asked when they stopped by HHGC s second annual Garage/Bake Sale. Although the weather was somewhat questionable, it didn t spoil the enthusiasm of the HHGC gymnasts who stood on the corner of Eaton Street and Curry Crescent waving signs and encouraging shoppers to drop by our sale. We re certain the efforts of the girls paid off as we raised over $730 from the Garage Sale and over $90 from the Bake Sale. Thank you to the many families who cleaned out toy cupboards, book shelves, etc. to donate items for the Garage Sale, baked Goodies for the Bake Sale and worked at the sale on Saturday 22 September. Gymnasts Natasha, Emma, Ashlyn, Ariana, Alana, Chelsea, Tamara and Rylee were all part of the cheering squad show encouraged potential shoppers to consider turning down Curry Crescent to check out our sale. We raised more than $730 from the garage sale and many of us got rid of some stuff that we won t miss. Yummy for the tummy HHGC athletes did the selling and HHGC Mom s did the baking. A perfect recipe for success. We made over $90 at our bake sale. Thank you to extraordinary bakers: Michelle McKay, Heather Wallace, Carmen Caldwell and Michaela Hopkins. 2 President s Message Damian Brooks, HHGC President About Damian Although Damian was very new to the sport of gymnastics when daughter Natasha joined the club in 2007, he quickly rolled up his sleeves and got involved. He has served as a member of the HHGC board since February 09: -2012/2013 President -2012/2011 President Director, Risk Management Whether you are new to our club or a returning gymnastics family, on behalf of the Board of Directors - we welcome you to our 2012/2013 Season. We have a lot of wonderful activities lined up for this season and we sure hope that you and your families will get involved. One of the first spine tingling events, that you may already know about, is our Kid s Halloween Night. Details of this event and many others are explained further in the newsletter. Speaking of newsletters, we are delighted to introduce you to our refreshed newsletter. We combined feedback from both the recreation survey and the competitive surveys and have come up with a refreshed newsletter called Connections. It is intended to connect and inform the families of all three of our programs: recreation, trampoline and competitive. You will hear more from me throughout the year as it is our intention to stay connected. 2012/2013 Board of Directors Damian spends a fair amount of time between the gymnastics club and local arenas. Daughter Natasha is a competitive gymnast at HHGC and son Stuart has participated in the rec and tramp programs on and off in addition to playing hockey. Damian Brooks, Presidentz Don Wallace, Vice President Bill Harrison, General Manager Michelle McKay, Special Events & Meet Coordinator Although Damian didn t know much about the sport of gymnastics a few years ago, he sure does now and he s always willing to chat with parents or answer questions. Michelle Mortimer. Fundraising Jo-Anne Kallio. Communications Treasurer To be appointed

Athlete Celebrating Profile our Coaches Celebrating our Coaches Talented, enthusiastic, capable and caring. These are the words that aptly describe our coaches. HHGC is delighted to introduce you to our current line up of coaches: Front row: Greg Lister, Greg Roe, Florin Chivu, Gabe Reitz Middle row: Katelyn, Sydney, Freeda Murphy, Brittney Johnson-Maracle, Martina Back row: Lauren Rock, Shannon Dally, Allie Rivers, Sarah V, Sydney Rivers Missing from photo: Johnny Cameron, Xhosa Baker, Mackie, Chloe, Shannon W, Emily, Rhonda Khelawan Congrats Brittney! During the summer, while working full time at HHGC and preparing for her next school year at Mohawk College, Brittney successfully achieved her Level 2 Coaching Certificate. Achieving Level 2 certification required Brittney to participate in a 2-day theory course, a 4-day technical course and several on-the-job hours. Brittney loves coaching because she loves seeing gymnasts be successful when they learn a new skill. Congratulations Brittney! We are very proud of you!

Athlete Profile Kaslyn Kallio Twelve year old Kaslyn Kallio had quite the summer First, she attended Woodward Gymnastics Camp in Pennsylvania. Then, at the end of that week-long experience, she was Tapped which means she was invited back to attend an All Star Week of training. Being tapped is quite an accomplishment as the athlete is not only acknowledged for her gymnastics ability, but also: leadership skills, work ethic and coachability. AND then, to round out the summer, Kaslyn was invited to represent HHGC as City TV s Athlete of the Week which aired on Monday 24 th September. Kaslyn comes from an athletic family. Both her parents play(ed) team sports and two of her Aunts and Cousin Miranda are former gymnasts. Her Aunt Dar was a Level 1 coach. When did you start gymnastics? I started gymnastics when I was 3 years old and living in Brampton. When we moved to Georgetown, I joined HHGC as a rec gymnast. My parents thought it would be a good idea to enroll me because I was always jumping off furniture and walking on my tippy toes so they wanted me to learn how to do these things safely. They still cringe a little when they see me heading toward the vault or doing flips on the balance beam. What is your favourite event? My favourite event is floor because it shows off the athlete s personality. You can get a little funky with some of your moves. Do you have any nicknames? Since I was a baby my family called me Peanut. Every once in a while you ll hear either my Mom or Dad cheering, Way to go Peanut! Have you accomplished any new skills lately? Yes. Recently I learned my back handspring on beam, cast to handstand free hip on bars, half on half off on vault and cast to handstand half turn on bars with spot. All of these skills are Level 7/8. Kaslyn received a Leader Award from Coach Florin at the end of last season. Kaslyn and Maddie developed a duet, hip hoppish beam routine for the Awards Show. Woodward Camp The first time I went to Woodward I was terrified! The thought of being in a whole different country than my parents made my stomach do back flips. But once we arrived I was itching to start training! When I got tapped I was overwhelmed with different feelings and emotions. I was excited, nervous, hyper, and dare I say it proud. Woodward is amazing! There are two training centres, one for the beams and one for the other events. The coaches were so understanding and funny. The cabins were very cozy and comfortable. Gymnastics wasn t the only activity you could take up at Woodward. Since mandatory training was in the morning you had all day to do as you pleased until 10:30 pm. You could go to a recording studio, go horseback riding, go carting, hiking, ropes course and many more. If you are considering a gymnastics summer camp I would highly recommend Woodward. Kaslyn enjoyed the Dress Up Activity as the Competitive Awards Show.

HHGC Recreational News Picture Day PhotoSPORT Photography will be coming on Sunday 21 st October to do action pictures of recreational gymnasts. Parents interested in pictures for their kids can sign up on the sheet on the recreational bulletin board. Registration can be done on-line or in person at the office. Don t delay many of the Fall programs were full with waiting lists. Last day of Session 1 is Friday December 14 th. HHGC Trampoline News Trampoline athletes prepare for first competition December is always a busy month. Parents are busy planning and scurrying around preparing for the holiday season and children are excitedly counting the number of sleeps until Christmas Day. To add even more excitement to the lives our trampoline athletes, they will be participating in an interclub trampoline competition on 09 December Details to follow.

Competitive News Volunteer Hours Explained We urge you to think of volunteer hours as part of what it takes to run a safe, fun and organized gym rather than a necessary chore to burn your required hours down. Competitive families typically coordinate the activities at the gym; however this year we are inviting recreation/trampoline families to join in. The number of volunteer hours required per comp family is directly aligned to the number of hours your daughter trains. There is a volunteer binder kept in the Storage Room. There is a dedicated sheet for each family. We ask that you keep track of your hours. A spreadsheet will be posted in the Viewing Room on a monthly basis so families can keep track of their hours. Home Hardware fundraiser In just 3 ½ hours, HHGC gymnasts sold 120 boxes of cookies during a fundraiser that took place outside the Georgetown Home Hardware on Saturday 08 September. It was amazing to watch the girls exude so much confidence approaching people to sell cookies. They were pretty darn cute which made it nearly impossible for people not to purchase a box of cookies or make a donation to our club, said Michelle Mortimer, Director of Fundraising. We raised $570 dollars for the club. I would like to express thanks to Home Hardware for the opportunity and to the girls that were able to partake in this outing. Great job girls there is a definite future in sales for our gymnasts. - Michelle Mortimer September Claire Nicole October Chloe Kaslyn 09 September 19 September 22 October 25 October November Alana 17 November
