From these students the GERSA student reps are chosen to compete in Arnhem Region then NT, then National! Good luck everyone and keep up the great practice sessions. Donations have been requested from some businesses to assist our fundraising efforts to fly successful applicants to mainland events. Touch Rugby Touch Rugby tryouts were held at Angurugu last week. Participating in the great inter-school trials were Ethan, Cooper, Kyle, Marko, Jaxon, Hudson, Joe, Christian, Sam, Lachlan, Daniel, Oliver, Caelan and Marshall. All boys participated fully and handled themselves well in the touch rugby play and socialisation games beforehand and afterward. Thanks boys for a great day out. Stamp music Pete and his son Jake from Stamp Music plucked and strummed up a storm over the past few weeks and then participated in a community open-mic concert at the Golf Club on the weekend. We thank them for introducing music and song-writing to our students and community once again. Evacuation Practice Students and staff held an evacuation practice on Tuesday 3 rd May. All bodies safe and accounted for, thanks to the great behavior of the students and it was all done within 9 minutes. Soon, kids will be getting their Semester One reports at the end of term. A bit of clarification about what A to E grades actually mean: A student who is working competently at the level expected for the year level will be awarded a C grade. To attain a standard higher than a C, the student has to CONSISTENTLY demonstrate above level ability, not only in the task at hand, but across a range of tasks. Students who fail to demonstrate skills independently at the level expected, will be awarded a D, or an E, depending on how much support is needed. Parents, almost every child is doing his or her best all the time. Please don t tie in monetary rewards with grades personal effort and improvement are what we should be rewarding academically, along with good citizenship. The ACARA website shows examples of student work at various levels. I encourage you to look up and discuss these with your kids. Our teachers are explaining these through constant feedback to students and the use of rubrics to show students what they need to do to raise their grade levels. We have included some more detailed info on reporting. Check it out on pages 2 and 3. 6 Thanks to Maurice Hogan, Gayle Rose and Kelly Farrell for organising a moving ceremony to mark the anniversary of ANZAC. Our students did you all proud, mums and dads. Their behavior was perfect. Also at the ARC ceremony they proudly held themselves in perfect conduct. Congratulations to Elizabeth Grosse, Tom Jackson and Dakota Hobbs whose ANZAC poems were chosen to be read at our school ceremony and the Dawn service at the ARC. ANZAC DAY by Elizabeth Grosse - Year 4 Appreciation of the sacrifice soldiers made. New soldiers dying every year to help Australia. Zipping bullets. Animals like dogs, horses and donkeys are used to help them and warn them. Common people fighting for Australia s freedom. The day they went to war, They ll never forget what they saw. As heaps of soldiers got shot down, The Youngest tripping with a frown. The first Turks shot, Then they saw the whole lot. They scrambled up the beach, Trying not to screech. They tried to make it up the rock wall, They didn t want to fall. Only a couple made it to the top, They wanted the war to stop. The soldiers fought for freedom, But freedom isn t free. The price they paid for us to be free, Is really important to you and me. By Tom Jackson - Year 6 Determined men and women. Able to live a long time if they are lucky. Years go by without dying that brings joy to Australia. Sacrifice by Dakota Hobbs - Year 7 As she says goodbye, her eyes fill with tears, She knows he has much greater fears. Dressed in uniform, he struts away, How she wishes he could stay. She is proud of every soldier and the sacrifices they make, Always courageous, although their lives are at stake. One day there is a knock at the door, a man with a letter of red, He fought very bravely the man said. She falls to the ground, tears streaming down her face, Her breaking heart thumping at a pace. She prays for those still serving and their families at home, That they will not receive a letter and be left alone. We will remember them. Not tomorrow, not the next day, Forever and always. 8 In Mathematics, we are learning to create surveys and graphs to represent data. In Music, we are learning to sing, play instruments and perform music to an audience. We have had lots of fun create compositions to Funga Alafia: A West African Welcoming Song.
