We have had a very busy term, with author visits, an amazing Science Week and many interesting trips, these are just some of the activities that have taken place in the two schools. 2 Page 2 Back in Time With The KFA Boys : By Zakariya Inabi, Nik Salahudin, Amir Akerkaou in 6B2 The KFA Maths Department chose some boys from Grade 6 to 8 based on their behaviour and academic skills to go on a trip to The British Museum. We visited three galleries, The Money gallery, The Islamic gallery and The Roman Empire gallery. We were given booklets to complete about the history of coins, currency conversion and geometry and measures of coins used in Britain today. We found many different areas in many different Eras. The Money gallery showed us how coins developed through the ages, from Lydia which is now known as Turkey to all round the globe until the present day. Coins have altered their shapes as well as their backgrounds too and is was very interesting to read about why certain coins have pictures of their leaders on them, for example the changing profile of Emperor Nero on the coins as he gained weight and aged during the Roman period. All in all it was a great experience for us and we learned a lot about where coins began, the materials used to make them, the images engraved on the coins and their past and present value. Face to Face with Mrs Aziza Mirza: KFA School Nurse by Hannaa Jean Delvaar Q: How long have you been working as a Nurse? A: I have been a nurse for eleven years. Q: What is the hardest thing about your job? A: It s hard when having to deal with major accidents. Q: What made you decide to become a Nurse? A: I love giving and helping people. When I was just 8 I looked after and healed a sick bird with a broken leg. Q: Have you ever worked in a hospital or only in schools? A: I have always worked in hospitals and I loved it, but the long hours were too much, so I couldn t continue. Q: What do you like about being a Nurse in a School? A: I love taking care of children because I love kids; I feel like their mother.

3 Page 3 A trip into the Past: Visiting the British Museum The girls MYP 1, 2 and 3 trip to The British Museum took place on the 21st April The trip was organised by the Mathematics Department including: Ms Heba, Mr Yassin and Mr Haque. The students were taken to the British Museum to research for a project based on the history of coins, currency and exchange. We were split up into different groups and sent to different parts of the museum. The sections that we visited included: The Islamic Department, Ancient Egypt, The Roman Empire and the Beginnings of Coinage. Booklets were given out to help research about coins from all over the world and to learn more regarding past and present uses of currency. When visiting the department of Beginnings of Coinage a professional taught the students about the history of Roman Coins. The booklets were then used in the follow up workshop which took place on the 25th April We enjoyed the trip and learned a lot from the visit, such as how coins were made and the materials used. Romans once used a large slab of metal as coins, converting it into small rounds of light copper. We also learnt about the history of exchange and the making of forged money. In the museum there was a large booth displaying a machine that is used to make money. Also learning about the fact that at one point all of the trading countries used just one coin so that all people recognised it and its worth. A lock including 100 pounds in fake coins tells us that it is extremely easy to forge a British pound. A British pound is made of hard copper and has a print of Queen Elizabeth on one side and a vintage like print. Numbers of it s making surround its edges. Most students favourite part was filling in the booklet and learning about currency around the world. All the girls from grade 8 quoted that they found it extremely enjoyable and educational and wouldn t mind visiting the museum again. By: Leena Bakhamis 6g, Noor Alhani and Leila Inabi 8g

4 Page 4 Book Week and World Book Day at the KFA!! Every year at the KFA we dedicate a whole week to encourage reading across the school. The Library and the English Department prepared a range of activities for our students to cultivate a love of books. Sufiya Ahmed a well-known British Muslim writer visited the Upper School this year. The author talked about her work and did a writing workshop for grades 6-9. The workshop was about the writing process and how a writer creates a plot, characters and the blurb to engage the reader. Students worked in groups and at the end had to share their ideas with everyone. It was a really interesting day and students did a great job developing plots and many interesting characters. In English lessons students were asked to read and discuss stories from around the world. Each student wrote their own short story some of which were selected and compiled into an anthology. World Book Day was on the 3rd of March this year. This event is celebrated all over the world to highlight the importance of books. This year some students dressed up as their favourite book character and IB1 students did an informative assembly about how Books Change Lives.

5 Page 5 Anonymous: A Short Story by Myasem T Adham IB1 She was a beautiful young girl with thick brown ruffled hair, almond shaped eyes and pomegranate pink lips. She went through primary school with her head held high and a smile on her face every day. She was an innocent, young and foolish little daddies princess unaware of the cruel world around her. She reached high school. You know, that place, where a child s innocence is drained from their bodies? She was quite a short girl, so she walked through those dreaded blue halls from Monday to Friday for five years, constantly getting bombarded by girl s twice her size. The foolish young girl s smile slowly started to fade throughout these five years until she finally reached year eleven, where smiling became more of a chore to hide the sadness when she had to encounter people. During these five years, straightening your hair and wearing heaps of makeup was the norm, so she did so every day to fit in with everyone else. Her thick and long brown hair became damaged and frizzy, so she straightened it even more to hide her hair s bad condition. The heaps and improper use of makeup lead to her skin breaking out constantly, so she wore more makeup to cover her ruined skin. The pomegranatepink pigment in her lips was lost due to a lack of water and an increase in sugary, carbonated drinks. Her obsession with her appearance, what people thought of her and magazines over took her positive mind-set and she almost became a robot unaware of her family and school work. Because it was year eleven she had her final GCSE exams, and she obviously left school with grades poorer than her mind-set. She decided to use the summer as a chance to better herself and moved to a new school to retake her exams. Due to her bettered-self and family s moral support towards her she managed to achieve many things. She is now doing an International Baccalaureate Diploma and has become an aspiring cosmetic surgeon, and the happy young girl inside of her is slowly returning. 400 Years of William Shakespeare! National Shakespeare Day (23rd April 2016) was celebrated with added vigour at the Academy, 2016 being the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare s death. The English department dedicated the whole week; 18th-22th April to engage our students in activities that exposed them to the Bard s most famous works. One of the activities involves students creating their own short film based on Shakespeare s works. The films will compete against each other in the Academy s Film Fest Competition. The screenings will take place on the 25th of the May and will be judged, the best film will be shown at the ShakeMeUp film festival in Prague. Caption describing picture or graphic.

6 Page 6 Science Week By Aisha Mezughi Grade 6 In Science Week there were many different activities; one of the main events was the Science Fair. The grade 10 girls participated in running a science booth, in each booth they carried out a variety of experiments. The grade 7 girls baked cupcakes and placed them in the shape of the periodic table. Ms Athya Ansari set a little challenge, the periodic table was made with some missing elements. The challenge was for the students to guess the names of the missing elements; the answers were then written onto post-it notes. If the students guessed any correctly they would get a merit. Science week was really fun and very educational but the week would not have been possible without all the science teachers and science department who had organised the whole event. To end with a big finish some students got a volunteer and put a plastic cup on their head and blew the cup off with a machine they had built themselves! The week s finale was a Science Week assembly which was very entertaining. Book Review by Aisha Mezghui The Maze Runner series by James Dashner I recommend this book if you like adventure and science fiction. This book will keep you up till the early hours. It is set in an original world where there are a lot of unexpected turns and twists along the way. The Maze Runner is part of a series of five books. The first one is The Maze Runner,the second is The Scorch Trials, the third is The Death Cure, the fourth is The Kill Order, and the last but not least is The Fever Code. I would suggest you read the whole series, it will develop your imagination and after you read and watched the movie, you could see the difference between what you imagined and what the film director imagined. Multiple sports, which are all fun, hockey, badminton, football, volleyball, netball, rounders & lots more! Which grades can go? All grades are welcome. How can you enrol in the club? To enrol in the club all you have to do is get a signed paper from your parents giving you permission to come after school to the club & hand it to Ms Mckenna.
