1 Wolverine Waffles Garde n Va lle y Broadcasting C la ss Student of the Month By: Grace Overlie February The Student of the Month title goes to the student who shows good citizenship, takes responsibility, has integrity and respect, and shows academic merit and approach. This student sets an example for others in the classroom and elsewhere, and is depended upon by his/her classmates. The Student of the Month for the month of February is Hannah Gilmore. Hannah is a sophomore this year and tends to work hard constantly. She meets her deadlines and is very attentive. She sets an example of diligence to all of her classmates. Hannah was nominated because of her responsibility, integrity, and academic excellence. This award is given to the teacher who is well-liked by students, has good teaching skills, and keeps the students entertained and always laughing. Mr. Court is the History and also one of the technology teachers. Robey Briggs said, He is very knowledgeable and will agree to disagree and that he will prove many points. Abbey Grigg said, he is very argumentative. Kevin Severance said, he is hilarious and really awesome.

2 Page 2 Girl Athlete of the Month By: Maria Madrilley The January athlete of the month for girl s basketball is Samantha Blackner. Sam is one of our seniors, she has shown great dedication and strives to work hard and be a great example to the team. Sam has worked really hard to improve in skill as well as has a great attitude and is showing leadership and never seems to give up! Sam was a post; she did a great job in practice and on the court. She always has a great attitude and a positive view of everything. Way to go hard Sam!! Boy Athlete of the Month By: Jesse Ward Michael Yearsley has played consistently excellent basketball for the wolverines this season. In January, he led the team in scoring in several contests and he continues to be an extremely coachable athlete. His teammates look up to Michael's efforts and he continues to work on his athletics in weight training class and his basketball at all times of the day. Michael is not just a great basketball player. People look up to him as a great student and person. Michael is obviously a great role model; he helps out people whenever they are in need. Michael has great morals and values on and off the court. He never lets his frustration get the better of him. said assistant Coach Goff 10 Facts About February By: Jesse Tussing 1. 4 Page 4 Boys Districts By: Dillon Ward Saturday, February 22 nd districts came to an end with a loss to Ambrose. We started the game out with a lead of 8 to 0 but soon they pulled ahead. At half time the score was 36 to 16 with Ambrose ahead. In the end we lost 65 to 41. Even though we did not win it was still a good game and overall it was a successful year with the Garden Valley Wolverines ending 3 rd in our league. Valentines Day The first legend, and perhaps the best known, began in Rome, when the Emperor, Claudius II, was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel as he was called, was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that Roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. So, he cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome! The good Saint Valentine, who was a priest in Rome, in the year 269 A.D., together with his friend Saint Marius, defied Girls Districts By: Zach Sanders The basketball girls districts dreams began on February 8 th against the Wilder Wildcats in McCall at 6:00. The Garden Valley Wolverines had a regular season overall record of 1-11 to the Wildcats record of The Wolverines pulled away from the beginning and never gave up the lead throughout the entire game. Garden Valley ended up with a victory and moved on to the next round. The second game was on Tuesday, February 11 th against the Tri-Valley Titans. The Titans had a regular season overall record of 15-6 and had beat the Wolverines on both of their previous encounters this year. It was a hard fought game for both teams but unfortunately for Garden Valley the Titans came out on top. The Garden Valley Wolverines played Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, he was sentenced to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. But while in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl, who may have been his jailor's daughter, who visited him during his confinement. Before his death on the 14th day of February, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed, " From your Valentine". In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius set aside February 14 to honor St. Valentine. Another legend says that Valentine's Day started in ancient Rome, on February 14th, a holiday to honor Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. Then, the following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia. In those days, the lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, on the eve of the festival of Lupercalia, the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl's name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would their third game on Thursday, February 13 th against their rivals the Horseshoe Bend Mustangs. It was a close game from the start but the Mustangs ended up winning which knocked the Wolverines out of the tournament due to the double elimination rules. Garden Valley ended in fourth place. Presidents Day By: Emma Fobes Presidents Day is celebrated on the third Monday of February. It was established in 1885 to commemorate George Washington s birthday, and is still officially called Washington s birthday. Presidents Day is often thought of as a celebratory holiday dedicated to four past presidents with February birthdays: George Washington, William Henry Harrison, Abraham Lincoln, and Ronald Reagan, while some people prefer to associate the holiday with all presidents, both past and present. These men have helped shape America to the wonderful country is it today, and of course we all love taking Presidents Day off from both school and work.

Respect Responsibility Commitment Integrity Broadcasting Technology is a class through Garden Valley High School which attempts to give students real-world exposure to both technology, in the form of web-page design, audio and video file manipulation, and journalism, through creation of newspaper articles, monthly newsletters, and the creation of the school s yearbook.
