1 CPHS High School Technical Theater Safety Rules and Regulations The important rules that everyone must follow when working on the stage or in the shop areas.

5 Daily Objective Demonstrate knowledge of technical theatre safety in the classroom. Create Safety Posters as a demonstration of this knowledge. Test knowledge of theatre safety in the classroom through classroom Jeopardy.

6 Warm-Up 25 minutes In groups of two you will create a Theatre Safety Poster or Advertisement based on an assigned section from the CPHS Theatre Safety Manual. Create Images or pictures of examples of what to do/what not to do. Try and get creative with your posters so people will want to look at them. You will teach your assigned section and present your poster to the class when finished.

11 Safety Rules and Regulations The following power point is a list of rules and regulations that each student must practice on the CPHS stage and shop areas. In order for a student to take part in the many hands-on activities that we will be doing, he/she must pass with an 90 or higher on the written safety test. This is the information is what you must know to pass.

12 Leading Causes of Accidents Insufficient knowledge Improper use of tools and facilities Failure to safeguard hazardous equipment Failure to remove faulty equipment Carelessness Taking unnecessary risks Being in a hurry

13 The Most Dangerous Part of Production The most dangerous time of a production is the strike when the show is over and the technical elements are dismantled and stored. This time of exhilaration and exhaustion warrants a greater degree of attention and vigilance than any other period in the course of the production.

14 NOT PERMITTED! Running, practical jokes, throwing tools or materials, jumping from one level to another, or any other dangerous activity is not permitted.

15 Safety Rules and Regulations 1. Keep the workshop clean and tidy at all times.

16 Safety Rules and Regulations 2. Make sure work areas are clear and safe for work to be done.

17 Safety Rules and Regulations 3. Always seek instruction before using an unfamiliar piece of equipment.

18 Safety Rules and Regulations 4. Only use tools and machines for their intended purpose.

19 Safety Rules and Regulations 5. Report all damaged equipment and do not use it until it is repaired.

20 Safety Rules and Regulations 6. Do not remove, alter, or disable any guard or safety devices on any power tool.

21 Safety Rules and Regulations 7. Never distract the attention of another staff member when a person is operating equipment.

22 Safety Rules and Regulations 8. NEVER indulge in horseplay.

23 Safety Rules and Regulations 9. Report all hazards and unsafe conditions and work practices to the Technical Director.

24 Safety Rules and Regulations 10. You may not use a piece of equipment until you have been checked out on that piece of equipment.

25 Safety Rules and Regulations 11. ALWAYS wear closed toe shoes, eye and ear protection, and appropriate clothing on the stage and shop areas.

26 Safety Rules and Regulations This means: Do not wear rings, ties, or loose clothing when operating machinery. Do not wear sandals or flip flops when on stage or shop areas only hard-sole shoes.

27 Safety Rules and Regulations This means: Wear safety glasses when cutting or drilling materials. Face masks should be worn when working with paints and such materials. Do not wear shorts when working on stage.

28 Safety Rules and Regulations This means: Long hair should be tied back. Remove all dangling necklaces, scarves, etc. Ear protection may be worn at your discretion.

29 Safety Rules and Regulations 12. Make sure depth and thickness levels are properly set on all cutting blades.

30 Safety Rules and Regulations 13. Never operate equipment until guards are in place and working properly.

31 Safety Rules and Regulations 14. Be aware of others around so that nothing is thrown from the a saw, which may cause injury.

34 Safety Rules and Regulations 17. Never adjust settings on machinery until switch is off and blades have ceased to rotate.

36 Safety Rules and Regulations This means: Make sure you can physically lift the weight. Get as close to the object as possible for picking it up. Make sure your footing is secure.

37 Safety Rules and Regulations This means: Do not twist while lifting. Lift smoothly but not slowly. Do not jerk the load. Bend at the knees not your waist and keep back straight. Get someone to help you.
