1 The Caravaner Great weather, 50 rigs, and one 1st timer made for a nice caravan. Live Oak - Problem- dwindling attendance, camping fees going up, and campers leaving late Saturday afternoon without paying for Sat. ( most campgrounds have an 11 AM checkout time). Possible solutions: increase cost per night, (how much are you willing to pay?), move the caravan to a different site, not have a Nov/Dec caravan. Silent Valley - Forms for Silent Valley were passed out. They are on the website or fill one out at Tucalota. turn them in to me or at the host tent. 2 Mother Nature Lurlie Edgecomb #2285 March at Lake Perris was a pleasant camping experience if the coyote howls in the late afternoon or in the evening didn t overly disturb you. We are good guardians of our pets and don t let them roam so they are safe from harm. Coyotes have to eat and there is no bowl of cat or dog chow waiting for them. We saw ground squirrels and smelled skunk, both are part of the coyote s food supply. I imagine some of the coots get taken as they waddle slowly and have no defense. Song sparrows and possibly a warbler or two were in the trees entertaining us. A pleasant view greeted us each morning as we watched a large, but scattered, flock of female robins working the grounds looking for seeds and bugs. All were females with, rusty red, breast feathers. They may have been en route to their breeding grounds or perhaps they were there to wait for the males to arrive. I ve not seen this many in one place before. The term robin red breast refers to the males especially in the Spring. I don t recall seeing them here before in these numbers. Some birds migrate at night and then rest and feed for a day or two before continuing their migration. They avoid some of the birds of prey that way. Another very different critter was the ant lion. You had to be very patient to see one as they are buried under the sand. You had to be aware those two-inch craters under foot were traps made by ant lions hoping to capture an unwary ant or two. The sides are steep sand grains which loosen and allow the ant to go to the bottom of the vortex where it is snatched by the aggressor. Picture a small, backwards earwig...the pincers are on the front end. The occasional hummingbird could be seen and heard as the males were doing their high dive swoops. Dark-eyed juncos (black head and eyes with a pale bill, sparrow-size) checked the ground for bugs and seeds. We heard song sparrows and warblers singing their hearts out in the trees. One raven flew overhead quietly. An egret was on the far side of the lake, but was easily spotted when it moved. 3 feet tall, slender and graceful, pure white...it is easy to spot and ID when it moves. We heard woodpeckers, saw an adult lizard and a very young one. On the water we could see a large flock of American coots with 2 lesser scaups mixed in with their flotilla. A few crows flew over noisily while one was trying to finish a nest way up in a very tall palm tree. Clumsy at nest making, there was a significant pile of large twigs around the base of said palm tree. This is going to take a while. Approaching the point of land where there used to be a water slide, we spotted a great blue heron landing on a light pole high above us. Then it did a quick maneuver and flopped over to a large nest whose occupant was unseen until then when it raised up. These 4 ft. tall creatures are both graceful and awkward. They are more gray than blue. Nests are used year after year and there are seven now. We saw three of the long-legged waders. If any of you come back here to Lake Perris before summer, please take a walk down to the lake and count how many nests are active and let Mother Nature know. I will see you at Live Oak where the tree swallows, oak titmice, and western blue birds should be a delight to watch. 2 April 2016 Lazy Daze Caravaner
3 Peggy Zabel (The Pegster) Women s Only March 2016 web site discussions This is a cool website that shows how secure your password is and how long it would take for someone to crack that password. There are 322,323,601 people in the United States of America. If everyone in the U.S. lined up single file, the line would stretch around the Earth almost 7 times. That s a lot of people. The U.S. Census Bureau statistics tell us that there are at least 151,671 different last names and 5,163 different first names in common use in the United States. Some names are more common than others. What about you? How many people share your name? Enter it and find out how many of you there are. This website will scan your computer and show how many apps access your personal information. The app is available for Android and iphones (free) so you can scan your smartphone. The app is called Mypermissions Privacy Cleaner. Upcoming Women s Only events: April Bring your greatest tip(s) to the April outing and share with others at the Women s Only meeting. 4 DON T FORGET THE MICKEY AND MINNIE MOUSE WASHER TOSS TOURNAMENT COMING IN MAY You know the rules so get your partner to play in our tournament in May. Remember that Gary Wells will be monitoring all the mice that will be playing. So get out your ears, pick your own partner and sign up in May. Remember, its women against the men so play well ladies. As you can tell there is no competition in this washer toss tournament. Painted Turtle This has been a relatively quiet year for support of the Painted Turtle program. Every good thing has its cycles. There are four knitter/crocheter still contributing to produce afghans and one or two pillow makers. Thank you Rose Reeder for your colorful afghan, it will make a child very happy and give them something to cuddle. I will be at Live Oak, hopefully if the creek does not rise to display past work and hopefully new works. The story of the Camp will be displayed. There will be some inexpensive water color paintings which the sale proceed will go toward the Painted Turtle Camp. Thank you for your participation as always Jane Farwell For our Veterans Submitted by Greg (Reno) Young WASHINGTON -- Veterans and active-duty military not in uniform can now render the militarystyle hand salute during the playing of the national anthem, thanks to changes in federal law that took effect this month. The military salute is a unique gesture of respect that marks those who have served in our nation s armed forces, said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake. This provision allows the application of that honor in all events involving our nation s flag. The new provision improves upon a little known change in federal law last year that authorized veterans to render the military-style hand salute during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, but it did not address salutes during the national anthem. Last year s provision also applied to members of the armed forces while not in uniform. Traditionally, members of the nation s veterans service organizations have rendered the hand-salute during the national anthem and at events involving the national flag while wearing their organization s official head-gear. The most recent change, authorizing handsalutes during the national anthem by veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel, was sponsored by Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma, an Army veteran. It was included in the Defense Authorization Act of 2009, which President Bush signed on Oct. 14. The earlier provision authorizing hand-salutes for veterans and out-of-uniform military personnel during the raising, lowering or passing of the flag, was contained in the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008, which took effect Jan. 28, April 2016 Lazy Daze Caravaner
5 Washer Toss Washer Toss Winners: Twenty teams were fielded and a double elimination tournament was held to determine a winner for the March Caravan. The weather was a bit iffy with a morning fog that burned off shortly after 9:00AM to leave us with a very pleasant morning. Team #12 Marlin Zable and Linda Palmer were beaten in the 4th round by Team #10 Phil Johnson and Karen Blain and had to go to the losers round where they defeated Team #8, Roger LaPorte and Millie Reiner to advance to the finals. There in the finals, Marlin and Linda were able to hold off Phil and Karen to win the tournament. Congratulations to Marlin Zabel and Linda Palmer our tournament champions.
