1 The Caravaner Welcome Lazy Dazers To Tucalota Springs RV Park Hosted by the Drifters May you always be blessed with walls for the wind, a roof for the rain, a warm cup of tea by the fire, laughter to cheer you, those you love near you, and all that your heart might desire. Well, that sounds like the recipe for a Caravan, all right! Our Hibernian hiatus at Vail Lake Resort was an unqualified success, save for our rogue leprechaun, Seamus, whose imbibing antics caused no little concern to his hosts, the Past Tents. Shameful Seamus! Kelly Green was the order of the day at the host tent, and we hope an Irish good time was had by all. We had an excellent turnout of 98 rigs, including two sets of first timers hosted by the Past Tents. They weren t scared off, and we look forward to seeing them again. Good going, Lazy Dazers! Steve Tivy conjured up some of the best weather any Caravan has enjoyed, with daytime temps in the high 70 s to low 80 s, mostly blue skies, and a few zephyrs to keep things fresh. Night numbers fell to a low of 33 degrees, just right for burrowing deeper for a few extra winks. Mother nature definitely made up for the January Perris drenching. Each morning started with, umm, eclectic announcements to kickstart the day. We had fun, but, thankfully, no one s going to make a career out of the microphone. Each group will, we re sure, put its own spin on this daily task while making sure to convey the schedule essentials. Vail Lake Resort was an ideal setup, with level sites, full hookups, generous spacing, and hot water in the showers. Two pools and miniature golf were available, as well as excellent hiking and biking opportunities. Its proximity to Temecula was a boon, as many took advantage of the area s restaurants and the bluegrass music festival that was held in Old Town Saturday and Sunday. We heard almost all positive feedback, and hopefully we can make this a regular part of our Caravan rotation. The camp owner came by late Saturday and extended an invitation to fish at Vail Lake. He said they were pulling out 14 pound bass! Rods and reels next time! On Friday, Gamesmaster John Mailliard offered hope to the perpetual also-rans with the Washer Toss Tournament of Losers or, as we prefer to term it, the Games for Those Yet to Win. The regular match on Saturday saw a record number of 37 teams and 13 boards in use. Kudos to all the participants, winners and yet-to-winners alike. Perhaps the best thing about washer toss is that it pairs folks from different groups as teammates and we get to know each other better. Vail Lake was continued reaffirmation that the Club will not only continue to exist, but will thrive under the rotating responsibility of its component groups. We owe much gratitude to the prior Wagonmasters, especially Rosemary and Don, for the foundations they laid and nurtured, and should all look forward to future decades of good fellowship and shared adventures. The Past Tents want to thank everyone who volunteered to man the host tent and who put on the daily activities. Many hands make light work. Faith and Begorrah! 3 Door Prizes, Birthday and Anniversary Gifts. Willie & Ruthie Judd of the Roadrunners, selected the gifts for the recipients at the Vail Lake Caravan. Ruthie was very pleased with the presents she chose and hopes the receivers were delighted too. Note It was brought to our attention that more Lazy Dazers would like to participate in this activity. Shopping is fun and healthy for you too. I happen to know it can be good therapy, especially when you don t have to pay the bill. The Lazy Daze Club takes care of that part! As of this writing the Hurkey Creek, Indian Hills and Live Oak Camp (Dec.) camp outs are available. If you would like to get some free shopping therapy, contact Donna LaPorte and she will sign you up for one of the available venues. Don Richards, retired Lazy Daze Safety Team Leader, is working the plan to schedule Dan Doran, a licensed Fire Extinguisher Technician to recharge and demonstrate how to use fire extinguishers in May at Live Oak. is event is a hot one (pun intended) and one not to miss! We know how important it is to have our extinguishers in good repair and in working order. is is your chance to put a checkmark next to Test my Fire Extinguisher on your Safety Checklist of things to do! Look for the date and time for this event in the Live Oak - May edition of the Caravaner. Don Richards and Donna LaPorte Lazy Daze Caravaner April

7 ANNOUNCEMENT Live Oak Camp Cinco de Mayo Potluck You are invited to bring your mucho bueno favorite South of the Border dish and join us at the Pavilion at Live Oak for a sumptuous potluck. The Roadrunners have a few games and surprises up their sleeves and look forward to being your hosts during this fun event. Roadrunners will provide a taco bar (chicken and beef) for all, or until we run out. We invite you to bring a refreshment your setup and a favorite Mexican dish to share. I just did a search on the internet for Mexican recipes. While viewing the choices, my salivary gland activated along with a sudden desire to head for the nearest El Torito! Painted Turtle With all the rain we just had, Team Turtle has been busy inside crocheting and sewing for this summer s Painted Turtle Camp. New team members are Zoe Caires for her two Irish themed turtle pillows and Connie Williams for two colorful lovely afghans. Prior members Mary Moffatt and Joyce Hirst each contributed two afghans. These projects are works of art and time consuming. The kids truly love these treasures as they become a kind of security blanket for the uncertain time they face. I am told you would see the kids holding their pillow or afghan at doctor s offices or at the treatment centers. Again thank you for them. Jane, the Collector Artist s Date Friday at 4:00pm I will be out by my rig or near by, attempting to draw or paint. I would love to have anyone interested join me. It will be an informal time of just exploring, practicing and/or drawing what ever your way. There will be no instruction, but I will have a book or two for inspiration and have paper, pens and pencils in case you do not have any supplies. Welcome all crafters! The scrapbooker/crafter group are planning to make this purse. It is real easy to make- just straight stitching though a walking foot helps sew the layers. All you need is 7-9 fat quarters or a jelly roll (found at JoAnn s or a quilt shop) or 2/3 yard of your own fabric scraps, 1yd thin iron on batting, and 1yd fabric for lining and inside pockets. Bring a cutting mat and rotary cutter and I will bring my machine with a walking foot and iron to demonstrate how to put it together-i will have instructions to give you so you can finish the purse on your own. If you want to make the purse please let me known by - lydgranger@earthlink.net or phone (cell) or (home). Lydia Granger There will be no show and tell unless you want it. So...if this intrigues you, bring your chair and we will see what comes from an Artist s Date. (Will announce my site when I get to the campout) Jane Farwell 2445 Lazy Daze Caravaner April

9 Mother Nature March at Vail Lake Resort was alive with sounds of birds and a few other animals-chirps, trills, kleeeer calls, hank and yank gruntings, killdee-killdee, croaks, caws, squeaks, and hoots. It was a noisy, but thrilling, time for Mother Nature. Life was doing well in this area. I never did get to see the frogs who did all the croaking at sundown. The quietest animals were the tiger swallowtails who seemed to float and flitter on by. We even had one or two show up for the Nature Walk. A field reporter told of seeing cottontails, lizards, carp, grebes and egrets over the hill and quite a ways toward the lake. The quail and squirrels were pretty quiet. The snake being taken to a high nest by a hawk was dead quiet. Three species of hawk were noticed--red-shouldered and red-tailed hawks are buteos or buzzard hawks--they have large bodies, rounded wings with wide, rounded tails-- and a pair of American kestrels- -a falcon which is much smaller than the others with slender, pointed wings and a long but narrow tail. Also know as sparrow hawks, the female was the larger, less colorful bird of prey. Both sexes had the double comma or black double mustache on each cheek. The thrill for many of us was getting to see, as well as hear nightly, the great-horned owl. On Thursday, an hour before dark, at the south end of the washer toss area, we had a good view for a long time of the hooting owl. He watched us watch him. He spun his head around at the sound of laughter from a practicing washer tosser. Because both eyes are on the front of its flat face, it must do this 180 degree swivel. When it hooted, we could see the white feathers of its neck. Saturday night two of them visited nearby at last light. A male? brought in a gift of a small mammal to the top of a broken off, nearly dead, oak tree. There were some hoots and some scratchy noises, then he took off to the west followed by her a minute or two later. Imagine, if you will, what probably took place there. He had arrived with an example of how well he can provide for her, says "Follow me...i'm a big, bad dude". And she did. The hummingbird who flew in my rig made a quick exit as my cat popped up. I had heard its squeaks and clacks earlier. Don't know who was more surprised ---Fluffy or the hummer. For the first time ever, we had a nuthatch show for the Walk. It did what any good nuthatch does, work the bark of an oak tree headed down the trunk. Killdeer flew up the creek most evenings calling killdee-killdee. Small juncos worked the ground looking for seeds and bugs. The western bluebirds were more interested in bugs than seeds, but they'll take those, too. Black phoebes catch the low flying bugs and return to a different perch. Starlings were making the cackling, squeaky noises. They will take over old woodpeckers nests making the many acorn woodpeckers have to drill again. They have plenty of practice doing that as evidenced by the hundreds of holes pecked into the siding on the bathroom buildings. One Nuttall's woodpecker was seen. His back and sides have stripes and not as much red on the head. Another cousin, the northern flicker was seen showing off its rusty-orange wing linings. I finally got to see the warbler I had heard singing above and around me. Sparrow-size, it blends in well and stays up in the trees. Tweet, tweet, tweet followed by a long trill was driving nuts until most of you left on Sunday at it finally came out of hiding. Audubon's or yellow-rumped warbler song had me watching with binoculars for three days with no luck. Now Mother Nature was happy! Please see Lydia Granger #2786 and Caryl Fisher #2886 in April at Tucolata Springs to report sightings and ask about a Nature Walk as I will not see you until May. It should be an exciting time as nesting will be going on. Get out and enjoy yourselves. Mother Nature Lurlie Edgecomb #2285 Lazy Daze Caravaner April

10 Terry s Tech Talk Tech Talk Article 49 Horst Miracle Probe Tank Sensors 04/2010 The black water tank indicator lights on the control panel have registered 2/3 Full for maybe the last five or six years on my 2001 Lazy Daze Rear Bath. It did not matter if the tank had just been emptied and flushed or not. This was never a major concern to me as I never connect to city water and always use the water pump. If I start with Empty holding tanks and a Full fresh water tank, I will run out of fresh water about the time that the holding tanks need to be emptied. The holding tanks on my rig are shallow and wide and this makes for readings that are subject to the whims of side-to-side slope and front-to-back slope. For these reasons, I never gave much thought to an elaborate and expensive tank level monitoring system. Then I saw an article about the Horst Miracle Probe tank sensors. They looked like an appropriate solution to the problem. I ordered one type of probes for the Gray tank and the other type for the Black tank. I discovered that the existing tank sensors are molded in the tank wall and are not removable. The sensors are located across from each other and the tanks are too close to each other to get a drill and bit in. I had to find another location for the new holes. I had to extend the existing sensor wires to the new locations. I measured the sensor spacing, recorded which color wire went to each sensor, and then cut the wires. I spliced a length of flat four-wire trailer light wire to the sensor wires. Referencing my notes, I marked the hole spacing at the new location and then used a 3/8 inch spade bit to drill the new holes into the walls of the EMPTY tank. The probes simply insert into the new holes. As the nut closest to the rubber section of the probe is tightened, the rubber section is shortened and expands radially making the seal with the tank wall. The Black tank probe has to be initially properly positioned so the hood ends above the copper probe wire. The instructions are very clear. I connected the wires according to my notes and the job was completed. My holding tanks are insulated and I never did find the sensor and wire that must be at the bottom of the tank. So I ended up with an extra sensor of each type. It has been 6 months since I installed the new sensors and they have worked without a problem. I am happy with them. The original sensors are just a metal screw head in the tank wall. The build up of damp crud on the tank wall tricks the sensor into reporting a false water level. The Horst probes are long and stand off from the tank wall. The Black tank probe has a protective hood so toilet paper is kept off of the sensor wire. The cost for the two sets of probes was about $63 from as they had the two probe sets bundled together. See the manufacturer s website, for complete details and the links for ordering. 11 GOODWILL AMBASSADOR REPORT GARY GENESER #2745 and husband of our former Assistant Wagonmaster, LINDA GENESER, is now home but he still needs a wheel chair and walker to get around. He will be having therapy and hopefully he will be able to walk on his own soon. Outbacker, ROSEMARY KRAUSE #2348 had eye surgery on March 9th and was unable to attend the Vail Lake Caravan. BOB LOWE #2811 of the No Mad s planned his hernia surgery so he won t miss his 50th Caravan Award at the Vail Lake Caravan. Now to the sad part of this article, FLOYD CHRISTOPHERSON #1793 formerly of the Drifters passed away last November. He missed his 100th birthday by two weeks. Another passing member, NORM BOLIA #2030 of the Firesider s passed away on March 20th while we were all at Vail Lake. Yet another passing member, JAY HANCEY #1710 of the former Card Shuffler s passed away on February 28th. Back to some good news it was nice to see Drifter MARLIN ZABEL #2861 at Washers without his sling for his broken arm. He said he was on the mend. I like to thank you all that me or slip me notes during the various caravans about our members that need to be remembered with cards. This column would be real short if you didn t keep me informed. Mona Shaner MonaL@sbcglobal.net 3/25/10 From the Editor The deadline for articles is the Sunday following each Caravan. Thank you for your continuing support in the production of the Caravaner. 12 ? EMERGENCY? Call on CB Channel 30 CODE RED: FIRE/GAS LEAK CODE BLUE: MEDICAL PLEASE Do Not Use the CB Until The ALL CLEAR Is Sounded Here are some facts about the 1500s. We ve come a long way! Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and they still smelled pretty good by June.. However, since they were starting to smell brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don t throw the baby out with the Bath water! 12 April 2010 Lazy Daze Caravaner
